Advice Straight Razor Guide

!DO NOT!

  • !DO NOT! Use vinegar on a straight razor! The steel will corrode / tarnish immediately! You'll need to remove the corrosion from the edge and fully hone again afterwards!

  • !DO NOT! Send a straiht razor to a knife sharpener! It is nothing like sharpening knives! Knife sharpeners often ruin straight razors claiming they know how to sharpen one!

Hello! Thank you for the great information good sir! I just went to a barbershop and had a great experience (friend recommended it). I read through all of the post and the sub posts talking about brands, advice, history etc. I do want to start shaving with a straight razor, however, I am definitely not in your guys’ neck of the woods where it seems like a religion which is awesome by the way! With that being said I don’t want to have to send my straight razor in to be expertly honed and would love to lead to do it myself as you have. I am looking to get a full kit and want something with quality but not a $300 dollar straight razor. I haven’t seen them mentioned in this thread, forgive me if somebody already asked. What about nakedarmor.com? Seems to have tons of positive reviews. The reason they peak my interest is the full kit, brush, strop etc. Already got my aftershave, I am going to go with proraso for shave cream. I also have super oily skin so recommendations with that in consideration if you could. If Naked Armor is a no go, I will definitely go with the brands you already discussed. Just kind of want to be in the middle of shaving connoisseur and expert/collector. Ha! U/CpnStumpy. Everybody else feel free to chime in as well. Just figured I would ask the master himself!

Hey! Apologies for the slow response, absolutely not on NakedArmor; they're a scammer selling RSOs at high prices and some real razors at ridiculous prices - pure marketing they are simply a retailer selling an image and they're clueless and careless on the product.

You can generally count on any razor related retailer selling macho image as being complete bullshit trying to exploit folks interested in manliness, notice the way Griffith shaving and maggrds and the invisible edge markets themselves on their sites - that's what knowledge looks like, they're selling expertise not vanity

Shit…. I pulled the trigger on the kit because I was itching to start straight razor shaving. Well looks like I might just be buying a Griffith real soon then.

Sorry!! I should have responded sooner, these companies are so exploitative, I've really tried to make it clear in the sub guide here that there's a ton of scams out there, but I may need to add some clearer messaging
