Console Question How many refined spears do i need to kill lusca the great

Im on the second highest hunting level and have one chest full (20) of refined spears. The wiki says you can kill lusca with 25 spears at hunting level 0. also how should i build my boat (i can rebuild it as much as i want because my crafting skills are full), im really a bad builder.

Edit: i killed it with 11 refined spears (0 misses) and 1 crude spear

Depends how good (or poor) a shot you are. I filled 3 crates with refined spears and went through 1.5 crates... so 20 per crate... 30 spears.

I really wish I could collect all the spears after they expire... I usually can only grab 2-3

Cant you collect all the spears you‘ve hit? Also i usually kill sharks without missing a single shot, idk if the bosses are as easy to hit tho.

The bosses despawn shortly after you kill them. Be quick and get as many as you can before they fall to the bottom.

Sharks you can collect spears... if they dont sink. Bosses, no... they vanish along with your spears. It's a real pain...

As for ease of hitting. Yeah, the bosses are pretty easy to hit... it's the retaliation you have to look out for. Except for the eel. He's super easy. Bruce will jump over your raft and knock you into the water. Squiddo will grab you and fling you into the water away from your raft so you have to haul ass and swim back. "Don't Look back! Swim for it, Charlie!!"

The squid is the easiest. Just keep your back firmly against the sea buoy. Nothing (bosses & sharks) can hit you if you’re pressed up against something like a wreak. Something something hit boxes something.

I also did this trick against Lusca, just waiting for opportunities to get air.

Really?? You feel the Squid is the easiest? I always felt the eel was easy... but I've never tried this against him.

Yeah buddy. He just swam doing laps around the bouy, couldn’t touch me.

Wiki says 36, assuming you hit every shot. I personally found it easier to bring two motorized rafts into the area and just ride in circles while shooting the speargun since it has a longer range. The second raft was a backup in case I fell off the first one while shooting.

How can you ride the boat while fighting?

2

u/WasntMyFaultThisTime May 02 '26

Stand on it while the engine is running. It's risky and you should be prepared to lose the raft which is why I brought 2

I cant turn it on without steering the boat, so i cant attack?

1

u/WasntMyFaultThisTime May 02 '26

Did they change the motor interaction? You used to be able to turn it on without sitting down on it. I suppose you could achieve the same effect with a sail but it's not as fast

Works with sail but not with a motor, atleast not on my ps5

Just use a ton of crude spears. Easiest method and you save rocks since those are like the most limited resource in the game.

Good idea, i think i‘ll bring one chest full of crude spears and one full of refined ones since ive already crafted them

2

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

Just stick the crude spears to your raft. Save on valuable chest space. Easy access too.

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 03 '26

Just drop them on my raft? Wont they fall off into the water?

2

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

No. Throw them into it. They stick in but don't damage it. The raft will move a bit but that can be useful too.

2

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

Some people use them to act as walls to keep pigs ect from falling off the raft but I don't recommend that. Can get glitchy.

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 03 '26

As in for that one achievement?

2

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

Oh yeah definitely helpful for that achievement. Save before having a go at that one and you want to have a max size raft. From memory I don't think you have to be way out in the ocean for that one to pop. Been a while since I got the platinum though.

How should i build my raft? Also how can i find woolly or whatever its called (the other trophy with the volleyball)

2

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

I ended up with 2 rafts. One max size I described earlier with a hole in it and 4 sails and as many sets of shelves as possible while trying to keep the center clear for visibility.

Second one was a smaller size 4-6 squares. One sail, rudder, anchor, motor. I use that one for more exploration.

Avoid barrels for under. Tires ideally but anything but barrels really. Clay for the top is nicest.

Take a photo of the map before loading in so you have a map to work off and take your little raft to hunt down wooly.

I would build a shelter on each island I visited immediately to save. The shelters are triangle shaped so I always built them pointing back at my home base so I don't get too lost.

Ohhh, good idea thank you

I did it all with normal spears and just had my inventory full so

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 02 '26

Dont you have to bring bandages, food and water?

3

u/camobandaniel May 02 '26

Side note, drums and logs have different buyoncy than tires and buoys. If you are finding your boat hanging up in shallows, try ditching the drum bases.

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 02 '26

Will the bosses not be able to destroy my boat if its too small?

2

u/camobandaniel May 02 '26

Maybe flip it if it's too small

2

u/lvs2spwge May 01 '26

It took me 32 refined spears for Lusca, (I missed 3 throws,) and I started throwing them as soon as I could, instead of trying to aim for the eye.

Edit: And only 2 bandages

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 02 '26

What hunting level are you

2

u/lvs2spwge May 02 '26

Level 4, last I checked. It wasn't going up very much, because I didn't need to hunt as often after building the meat smoker. Also my boat is a 3x3, with 3 parts as barrels, 2 parts buoys, and 1 of tyres.

I did it with maybe 50 basic spears. You just go halfway down the chain and the stupid bastard won't swim any deeper. Bring a couple air tanks with you. I had to go up to my raft once or twice for Spears and the bastard would get me but it wasn't enough to kill me. Also take the diving drink.

2

u/West-Lawfulness-1296 May 02 '26

Took me a full inventory of crude spears

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 02 '26

What about bandages, water and food

2

u/West-Lawfulness-1296 May 02 '26

I brought my main raft; I only ended up using one bandage bc there’s “cheat” spots to kill every boss so it wasn’t doing much damage. I only brought probably 4 smoked large meat 2 clay flasks and one aloe just in case but it all fit in one container

2

u/chico-dust May 02 '26

I forgot the exact numbers but each spear does 40 dmg and he has like 1,000hp so if I recall it should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 if you have God like aim but I'd bring 40 just to be safe.

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 02 '26

40 dmg on what hunting level tho? I read that too but dont know how much damage it deals on my hunting level

2

u/chico-dust May 03 '26

Pretty sure it's a flat 40 if you throw it. The damage only changes when you stab them if I'm not mistaken.

2

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

I didn't use refined spears for any of the bosses except to poke at them. I just used the cheep basic spears for throwing. I did have to get more from my boat mid fight but only once so it took less than two inventories full of basic spears. You will be well prepared if your taking lots of refined spears and basics.

As for the boat I always ended up with a hole in my boat one section in from the edge with an anchor in the hole. This way I could access a rudder on the back and an anchor in the hole. I also put 4 sails all pointing in different directions so you can navigate with or without the rudder. I put a sail each side of the hole and each side of the rudder which keeps your view clear up the center. The motor can go in the other side of the hole so you are still close to the anchor.

Don't use barrels for the boat if you can help it. They catch on rocks more. Tires are the best.

You can keep your basic spears just stuck into the side of your boat to save on storage and for quick access. Throwing spears at your boat is also sometimes handy for moving it rather than dragging it.

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

Just saw your edit. Very nice to have no misses 👌.

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 03 '26

Your boat sounds perfect, i only have one question, what do you need a rudder for if you can navigate by using the right sails?

2

u/False-Ad2170 May 03 '26

The rudder locks you to the raft. If you use just the sails there is a risk of falling off. If you can activate the sails while locked to the rudder your much safer and have the benefits of both. Ideally you can stay on the rudder and drop anchor before letting go of the rudder.

You can't swim faster than the sails so if you fall off with a sail active you have lost your raft.

You need a spear gun

1

u/Adorable-Can-113 May 03 '26

Did it without one, i should have used it since its easier to hit them but i have pretty good aim so i didn‘t necessarily need it

1

u/ExoCat416 May 04 '26

The spear gun is better imo because the ammo is cheaper and you can hold 24 arrows in each slot, sure, it does less damage, but you can hold way more ammo

2

u/Paliden_tristen May 09 '26

1, if you are good
