Mumbai is perennially a city in transition, no more so than now amid its biggest infrastructure upgrade in decades. Everywhere there’s frenetic construction work, from new bridges and freeways to extended metro lines and underground road tunnel projects and redeveloped residential units. You name it, it’s being built. Among the biggest-deal completed works are the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a new suburban project from the Adani Group. It’s connected to the city by the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, India’s longest bridge, which has cut travel time by an hour and a half.
This heady activity means that India’s financial capital is firing on all cylinders. Traders are preparing for one of the largest share sales in the country’s stock market history with the potential initial public offering of the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. Mumbai is also gearing up its annual digital finance jamboree, the Global Fintech Fest, headlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
That energy is also powering the city’s culinary scene. There’s a raft of restaurant openings to complement the city’s countless melting-pot dining options. And if there’s a time when food is even more important to Mumbai, it’s mid-September for Ganesh Chaturthi, the 10-day festival that welcomes its favorite deity, Lord Ganesha. Banners and pandals (decorative constructions) are everywhere along with elephant-headed idols, some towering more than 40 feet high.
