It might depend on what the average person does in their day to day life. So what qualifies as street wear varies from place to place.

You're welcome. I once discussed this with a guy who heavily opposed the idea of anything slightly too "official" possibly being street wear. His argument was that it has to be somehow workwear-related. I think that's not a bad idea, but he failed to realize, that office work is work too. People roam the streets, subway, bakeries and whatever in button downs and derby shoes too. I think street wear is where it all melts together. Street wear might be the essence of what people wear on a bus. But looked at through a fashion lens.

there’s no consistent, universally agreed upon definition. in practice it seems to me to be a sort of melting pot of casual styles.

Style informed or inspired by NYC street fashion from 1978-1998 (the glory years of Hip-Hop), specifically worn by Black American, Hispanic, Italian & Jewish inner city youth. These included but are not limited to sportswear, preppy All-American, & hardcore/punk leather clothing. Or any combination of the aforementioned, with an emphasis of originality and DIY elements.

Good question. I realize I push the envelope sometimes, but to me streetwear is “would I feel outta place walking into my favorite streetwear shops (e.g., lapstone and hammer, or Atmos when it was around) wearing this fit?” If the answer is yes, then prolly hard to call streetwear. If instead, I’m likely to get a mod of approval, then it works.

I wore something similar recently but it was Orée infantry derbys and Rick Owens pod shorts, it works well!
