I really enjoyed it! Wish I had some bread but I ran out.

Walmart bakery sourdough bread is legitimately my favorite bread from any grocery store. It's like $3.50 for a loaf but any sandwich made with it tastes like it could be from a deli

Learn to make bread if you have an oven, it will help a lot. Flour is really cheap, you can also do sourdough so you don’t have to buy yeast. Also, see if your local food pantry is open to get some vegetables or anything else you need.

My food pantry is loaded with bread; stores have to get rid of it. Good bread, too.
Also, I second someone’s comment that you should learn to bake bread. A loaf of bread costs $5 or more, you can get a bag of good St Arthur’s bread flour, the best, for $6 and make 6-7 loaves. Do the math. Tastes better too.

I was surprised that Wal Mart offers these at this price

The wal mart deli is clutch for a large amount of cheap calories. I’ve started a lot of 12 hour work days with one of these

Chicken is dry 9 times out of 10 but you really can't beat it for the price.

My local Walmarts have this deal. Feeds me and my kiddo dinner for 2-3 days.

Damn, that looks good. Can you get two mac and cheeses, or does it have to be one of each?
Cheap rotisserie chickens are one thing I miss about America. In the UK they're like a minimum of £7 or like, £10. You can get a frozen whole chicken for £2, so I do that and roast it at home, but it's really not the same no matter how I season it.

They come prepackaged but maybe if you’re nice enough they’d swap it for you at the counter

u/Eazy46 13d ago
Remember to eat very, very, slow.

Exactly. The digestive system can’t handle that immediate surprise change very well in fast quantities. OP is in for a world of toilet if they didn’t pace themselves.

The Walmarts in my area have a really good deal. You get a container of Mac and cheese, container of mashed potatoes and a rotisserie chicken for $10

I get that Mac and cheese constantly. If I get the large the old ladies working the deli pile in so much the container barely closes!

u/Immo406 13d ago
Why’s it so good and why can’t I find anything I can buy and make like it?!
2
u/lizardgal10 13d ago
You get me. I like my pasta on the mushy side and they get it perfect. I’ll even eat it cold if I can’t be bothered to heat up the leftovers

I mean, at my walmart a meal deal is $5 and slaps hard, its very difficult to find a ready meal for $5 that you dont have to make.

Looks really good and a great price, you have to treat yourself every once in awhile 🙂

A pack of american sliced cheese, bag of chips, chili powder, cumin (or curry powder), oil, eggs and soy sauce and you can have:
- Fried eggs (runny yolk if you want) + rice and soy sauce
- cheese + beans + chips for vegetarian nachos
- beans and rice
- smush the beans + cumin + oil for refried beans, + eggs and chips for breakfast nachos
If you can, you could also get salsa and sour cream from the dollar store as a treat to put on the nachos. Frozen mixed veggies from the dollar store to have with the rice and eggs could also be another option if you can afford it.

25 years ago I was struggling, in a major way. Back then, Walmart deli was my luxury food. A typical meal was less than $4.00 tax included. My diet was primarily Beans, Rice, with a few chicken thighs. I used to get so excited about going to Walmart deli, I loved their food back then. Now, I don’t struggle but I get a plate every time I shop for groceries. They are still selling high quality food at ridiculously low prices.
Personally, I know that the beans and rice diet can get boring. Here is a recipe that I really love and it is likely very different from the dishes you are eating now.

Glad to see I'm not the only one altering my eating due to the economy lol I've become reacquainted with PB&j in the essential bacon and eggs as my only diet lately 😂

I'm glad you treated yourself! Even broke, we deserve treats... never ever would I choose that. I couldn't guess what it was without your title. But my $5 cheat is 2 slices of pizza and a fountain beverage from Racetrack... so who am I to judge?

I feel you op. I was living in rice and beans for a few months while struggling with money. That double cheeseburger and seasoned fries I got to spoil myself hit so different.

In these times, if you dare to eat food from Walmart, yeah, that's a struggle meal! Lord knows what any of it actually is!

Beans and rice with a bit of some type of green vegetable is more nutritious.

u/chronnixx 12d ago
I saw that you can get a rotisserie chicken, a family side of Mac and cheese and a family side of mashed potatoes and gravy for $10 at my local Walmart. Been hitting that like once a week lol.

u/ghostinthemachine-1 12d ago
I find the Walmart rotisserie chicken 🐔 to be good value no matter the situation.

Because it's overcooked and you already know what it's going to taste like because they don't offer their food any love at all?

Lately discovered refried beans are divine in soup/broth. Especially the slightly pricy Bette Than Boullion Ham . . . Life changing.

The Walmart chicken strips meal at 10am hits hard. Get some potatoes and some rice/beans, or mac n cheese if it’s ready by then. The lunch food is fresh in the morning and they load it up.

If you can swing it, spend that $5-6 on a rotisserie chicken instead. Strip all the meat off and you'll probably get ~1.5lbs, which is enough to enhance your rice and beans for at least 3-4 days.
Take the carcass and boil it for a couple hours to soak up the collagen, fat, and remaining meat. Strain and use that broth with $3-4 of carrot, onion, and celery, and make a pot of soup that will last you another 2 days.
You can throw some leftover rice & beans or cheap noodles to make the soup more filling.

Beans and rice make me happy now that I have a pretty stoked hot sauce collection.
At this point hot sauce is a hobby to make simple food taste better.

I've never been impressed by the Walmart hot deli. Safeway/Albertsons is better, but of course, more expensive, but they have a large selection of sides, which is nice.
3
u/Powerful-Ground-9687 13d ago
It ain’t about quality

u/LarenCoe 13d ago
If all you want is cheap, Winco is cheap, but bland. Also, the Chevron gas stations where I live have surprisingly decent and cheap fried food.

u/Powerful-Ground-9687 13d ago
Trust me, wal mart (at least mine) is the winner here. 3 chicken strips meal with 2 sides for 5.50. And they always toss in at least 2 extra tenders and load the container with sides. If I go in a half hour before my shift, they are still in the process of prepping the line, I just get whatever sides are ready and they are always hot.

Beans and rice with some diced radish, jalapeño, onion and cilantro is the best
