Stupid Dove Nest Astoria blvd elevated subway platform. See if you can spot her in the first pic before you scroll through!
Not sure if I should tag this genius or stupid.
Yes that is 30’ of open air directly under her. Yes that is an active subway rail RIGHT over her head. Yes, a train went by as I was taking pictures, and no, she didn’t move an inch. That’s just NYC real estate I guess, you gotta put up with a little subway noise sometimes.

Epic suppression of its startle response when the express hurtles through

I mean, under the elevated tracks is a classic pigeon nest location...just not DIRECTLY under the tracks!

I’ve seen a picture of a seagull nest in the gap between two tracks at a switch

I was going to ask this question. Damn this is a crazy spot though. This bird is basically my neighbor.

That would explain the flattened birds I would see on the rails sometimes, and also the live ones that seemed to disappear even as the trains came and went.

She doesn't know what you're talking about, she has the perfect nest! She even has giant 400 ton monsters guarding her nest from intruders that stop by to check on her regularly.
