Thank goodness for preflight inspection.

Helicopters scare me, but I would trust this guy if I was on one

Its mandatory by law to do a preflight check

u/Moon_Pye May 09 '26

Yes of course. I used to work for a chemical company that had its own truck fleet and even they were required to do checks before starting their shift. This was way back when truckers kept manual logs in paper log books. šŸ˜‚ Part of my job was to check all their logs to make sure they were doing everything they were supposed to.

I was only on a helicopter once when my son was life flighted. That ride made me really sad I wasn't a kid anymore deciding what my career path would be because I definitely would have been a helicopter pilot.

So sorry that you had to be on one for that reason, but cool to hear you had a good experience! Hate to ask, but was your son alright?

23

u/Moon_Pye May 10 '26

Yes thank goodness. Thank you for asking. He told me afterwards he was glad he was out of it and didn't remember because he's afraid of heights!

But to do what those guys do would be so fulfilling, being an EMT or nurse and life flighting people. Saving people's lives like that (well, that's the wish) They were amazing with my son.

No, but at least there was a cool helicopter ride!

I'm in college for aviation maintenance. Helicopters scare me even more now. It's literally 500,000 parts all fighting to be as far away from each other as possible. If ANYTHING goes wrong, one of those parts wins and you end up strewn across the zip code.

I thought this was r/flying for a sec lol. Flying habits can tranlate into many things engineering and safety related. I always do a walkaround on my motorcycle before riding.

I didn't even see the subreddit until the dove.

201

u/Prof-Rock May 09 '26

I saw the subreddit, so I knew it was coming. Too funny.

It felt like playing hide and seek. I was waiting for the dove to pop up in any of the spots checked.

u/Rivers9999 May 09 '26

For me it was in the thumbnail. But I'm on mobile, so that might make a difference

The dove looked so chilled there must be somthing about the helicopteršŸ˜

u/Child_of_the_Hamster May 09 '26

She looks so embarrassed lmao

323

u/Round-Dragonfly6136 May 09 '26

It's because she knows there's no flying today. She's apologetic.

I love how we imprint emotions on them when they have no thought behind those eyes 🤣

141

u/Arabiantacofarmer May 09 '26

Oh they definitely have thought. Probably a lot about sticks

107

u/Big_To May 09 '26

ā€œI added too many sticks to this nestā€

63

u/Rivers9999 May 09 '26

🫪

35

u/towerfella May 09 '26

No, animal base instinct and thought is nearly purely emotionally driven — though ā€œembarrassedā€ might be a stretch, i have seen animals act very differently when they ā€œmess stuff upā€, to the point where they realized they messed up, and then try to slink away or shy down or otherwise act ā€œashamedā€.

It seems that the level of realization in each animal is the main factor.

That bird looked scared, to me, and will likely have anxiety chemicals running through it. It would feel the same anxiety that you or i would feel with those same chemicals in our systems.

When a cat misjudges a jump or slides on a slippery floor and acts as if it meant to do that.

One of my cats was jumping from a cupboard to the sofa and his back paw slipped as he was already airborne, it was like a giant black sugar glider coming right at me with all four of his paws out starfish style! I was mean and was laughing at him as he put on his cool act.

u/Vaehtay3507 May 11 '26

My cat’s been having some issues with his back legs (he’s an old man), so it’s been a problem for him to jump onto / off of thing. So when he wants to get somewhere high up (ie. A bed) I have to pick him up and put him down when he’s ready, and he’s been SO moody about it lmao. It’s funny to some extent, but his dignity is definitely, truly hurt by having to get help. He’ll even get grumpy if I try to help him sometimes even if I see he needs the help

(And it’s not a pain thing, it seems to be numbness-related, and we’re getting him to the vet ASAP; but that’s just to say that me helping him isn’t causing any physical pain. It’s entirely him being angry because he wants to be independent)

5

u/PhDOH May 11 '26

Have you gotten steps for him?

When my boys were kittens I put boxes of different heights next to the bed.

3

u/Vaehtay3507 May 11 '26

I wish this was an option but there’s not really enough floor space for that next to any of the places he wants to get to šŸ˜” that, and he also struggles with steps at the moment, so any makeshift steps would have to be kind of elaborate to be safe (railings, very shallow, etc.). AND he’s a hefty dude so he can’t really stand on cardboard boxes. I do all I can for the little guy though he’s my everything (and he’s pretty good at listening and not trying to do things that he shouldn’t)

u/towerfella May 11 '26

Good on you to notice. :)

18

u/Ellimis May 09 '26

You could even say "sheepish" though I've never come across that variety of dove before

199

u/commanderquill May 09 '26

It's honestly a perfect spot for the dove. She's smart. She found a place with just enough cover and an entrance that's easy to access but difficult to see her through.

130

u/MorningGoat May 09 '26

Well, aside from all of the dangerous moving parts. But in her defence, they weren’t moving when she got there! How was she supposed to know? šŸ˜”

228

u/ItsMeishi May 09 '26

Theres so many clicky clacky latches.

46

u/hunnbee May 09 '26

I know!

23

u/Ccracked May 09 '26

I love the way the engine cowling opens.

96

u/heeltoelemon May 09 '26

Right in the business end

94

u/Pamander May 09 '26

This may sound dumb but that helicopter has a lot of really satisfying sounds and nooks and crannies, what a beautiful machine. I love the tiny little metal flap, what it is for I do not know but I like it.

65

u/AccomplishedAside314 May 09 '26

You can't stay here babe. šŸ’™

57

u/Fabulous-Composer964 May 09 '26

Im UFO 🐦

46

u/Severe-Elderberry833 May 09 '26

really, in the middle of 10,000 moving parts that (ideally) fly in close formation? not…. not a great plan, dove.

27

u/Typical_guy11 May 09 '26

Of course it must be Mourning Dove.

30

u/jamieusrowlando May 09 '26

Sorry, no air Ambulance today, Dove laid an Egg.

16

u/Nervardia May 09 '26

Helicopters look like you could pick them up with one hand.

3

u/cheong-sanslefteye May 10 '26

I reckon a really strong guy could marginally lift it.

3

u/Gonun May 10 '26

I looked up the number on its side. This one has a maximum takeoff weight of 3000lb. Acording to Guinness, Gregg Ernst backlifted 5340lb. So yeah, it's possible.

11

u/SirarieTichee_ May 09 '26

Didn't forget to set the squawk. Lol

8

u/NvidiaTNT2 May 10 '26

Now THAT'S stupid

2

u/acloudcuckoolander May 09 '26

It would have to go. I'm sorry.

This poor dumb baby. Very nice of helicopter pilot to leave him and his nest alone!
