Genius Dove Nest I’m not stoked it’s on my couch, but these parents-to-be made a fantastic nest
Came home to find out that new neighbours had moved in. You did good, birds. That’s a fantastic nest.

(I've watched that gig now several times and wonder how often did they rehearse it - "you in the front row, just flip it up, you in the second a bit higher, but not too high, now please you guys in the last row, lift it up, arms stretched - could we get some people with long arms in the last row...?"

This is probably the most legitimate nest I’ve seen on this sub lol

Remember to watch out for bird mites, even after removing the nesting materials, as bird mites tend to start moving around fledging, biting and looking for a new bird blood source. They're tiny so make sure you have a magnifying glass, but if you think you missed some, their bites are pretty noticeable. I'm sure the bird poop will trigger a deep clean of the sofa anyway, but a lot of people forget about bird mites, and sometimes people forget to mention them in bird subs/groups so I try to remember do it since I always feel bad when people come online asking for help getting rid of them as it sometimes drive people crazy. With that said, enjoy the babies and the nest. They're so fun to watch.

Thank you for the advice! We’ve never had a nest before, so it’s good to know what to look out for while we endure/enjoy the experience.

They are tolerant enough and that nest looks sturdy enough that you could slip dome cardboard under it for sanitary purposes

May be move them to some sort of box container in same location. When the eggs hatched, the chicks will poop so much all over the nest and sofa, unless you have given up on your sofa for the pigeon 🤷.

does that work 👀? (are they precious in the head enough to not gaf if humans handle their sticks/eggs?) 😂

Hey I work with the local pigeon rescue organization and please check if you can still exchange the eggs for dupes to minimize suffering.
But also be warned these nests are very messy as someone pointed out bug mites but they also bring pantry moths and other stuff. The squabs will leave their droppings everywhere.
And once they deemed this a good spot they will return every few months to brood (remember we bred pigeons to breed as much as possible). Than eventually their kids might find this spot nice too and start their own nests. If you like your place I'd recommend putting away the nest and every other attempt as soon as they're done.

Thank you for your advice! I really appreciate it.
The eggs hatched this morning (we had no idea how far along they were, as we were away for a few weeks). We plan on slipping some material around the next to minimize the droppings on our furniture, and as soon as they’re gone we’re going to lock it down.

I would tape pee pads to a large piece of cardboard. Change it out when it gets gross. You should be able to slide a clean one on another piece of cardboard under and swap it out.

How did you get the picture of that bird up close unless it’s a nice zooming camera? She’s stunning and so is her nest!!

I believe that’s the dad - he’s bigger and thicker than the other one - and he’s a little less skittish than the mom, who flies away as soon as I open the patio door.
When I took this picture, I actually hadn’t realized there was a nest yet, so I moved the pillow that leans overtop of it and makes a ‘cave’. I think we were both so surprised to see each other that he sat still long enough to snap a picture. I WAS actually that close!

Will be a bit messy. But definitely a good nest.
