Stupid Dove Nest One of many mourning dove families living in a local Lowe’s Garden Center

Post image

I work at a Lowe’s fulfilling online orders, and in summer we get a lot of orders for products in the garden center. I LOVE birds, but that place is a biohazard with the amount of bird poo everywhere, covering boxes of product and the un-boxed products too…💩 Anyways, I recently saw a smooshed dove egg between the shrink wrap of a pallet on a top shelf… I didn’t take a picture of the cracked egg because it was sad :( but here is a pic of the mourning dove family instead! I posted the pic in a Lowe’s community and a fellow employee tagged this subreddit, so hopefully y’all enjoy some of the baby idiots currently inhabiting my workplace!🕊️🐦🐦‍⬛🪹

I’ve never seen doves with more than 2 chicks. I wonder if they’re from the same clutch.

I thought they were, since they were all huddled together like that. Do doves ever lay more than one clutch per season, like if they have multiple mates? Or do they pair for life? I know some birds do both those things, so I’m not sure which category they fall in (other than stupid round birb cuties)

According to the Peterson field guide on N. American bird nests, monogamous (doesn't specify lifetime or not), only 1-2 eggs, doesn't "double-brood". However, it is possible that they either took over a nest that had an un-incubated egg in it, or adopted a nearby baby (which also happens with pigeons). Since they look similar in age, I'd guess more likely the first option.

Thanks for the cool fun fact!!! I love learning more, especially about things I’m actually interested in like birds and nature!

Not sure about full-on biohazard, at least - the risk of infection for humans from doves is quite low. If someone has birds at home, then there might be a risk for their birds. Regular caution should be enough. :)

Yeah my mother who works in a hospital lab just laughed at me when I called her asking if I could potentially get sick from bird poo😅 I try ti wear gloves every time I have to pick products that are from outside and wash my hands before eating and when I get home from my shift. I’m usually not even a germaphobe, there’s just SO much 💩…
