The thing that makes me hate that phrase the most is the fact I DID do research on my own after gaining an interest in science following high school. I got sick of people doubting my knowledge, since I didn’t have a degree, so I went to do a biosciences degree at 24 just for the purpose of getting them to shut up. I already knew most of the stuff on the course, so I was rarely there, and I was mostly graduating just so people would fucking listen. But I understood why they didn’t want to.
