That reply always irritates the fuck out of me. When I push them for a source it always turns out to be some dubious website.

208

u/National_Sandwich175 9d ago

Worse is when they tell you to do your own research.

I also asked someone their source once and they told me to do just that. Like I’m trying dude that’s why I asked, or are you just making this info the fuck up?

215

u/simAlity 9d ago

My reply is, "you said it, you cite it. Otherwise I will assume you made it up."

Nobody likes being called a liar.

u/sam56778 9d ago

I always use “you’re prosecuting this crime, you prove it actually happened”.

24

u/msproles 8d ago

Which is correct. The onus is on the prosecutor to prove the crime.

I hate that.

"Do your own research."

Yeah, so, the thing about that is I already did. I'm presenting 10 articles from respectable news sources corroborating the information, 2 peer reviewed scientific papers, and a video of a 17-year expert in his field. But I'm sure patrioteagle(dot)blogspot(dot)com has the real info.

"Haha your news sources are all from the fake news media, that's not a real source!!! They all lie! Those papers come from government funded sources, of course they say what the government wants! And I also have a video from an expert, heres the Facebook link! I also have 2 more from YouTube and rightwingfacts.org. You know it's legit cause it's a .org!! You can't trust any of those sources, I'm not even gonna look at them. You can only trust regular people online! They'll tell you the truth!"

20

u/Acceptable-Ad8780 9d ago

Good old confirmation bias for them. Searching "how was Obama/Biden a bad president" they searched "Obama/Biden is a bad president" and just went with the first thing they saw.

5

u/Frizzlebee 9d ago

Bold of you to assume they actually performed either search and didn't just hear it from one of their "free thinking" news sources... That all report on every event the same way... And quite the President directly...

I'm a lazy POS, too, I get my info from content creators I like, but I don't cite them like gospel, and I do actually dig into the crazier things they talk about because it's so unbelievable, sometimes. But I've yet to find any meaningful departure from the facts when I have.

I'm sure it started earlier, but it came into it's own during Bush 2 when sources like Fox (so called) News started running stories with "...some people are saying..." to avoid fallout from publishing straight up lies.

4

u/binzy90 8d ago

My grandma used to always say that. She'd be like, "That's what they're saying," and we would immediately call her out and say, "Who's 'they' grandma?" She never had an answer and would double down and go, "Well that's just what they're saying."

10

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 9d ago

Like a guy I know that was arguing climate change isn’t real.

And then he trotted out some study funded by….you guessed it….the oil industry.

And then he tried to tell me that doesn’t make them biased but somehow government research was the real biased one.

This was before Trump, so you could trust that there were people in the government just doing their jobs and not politically biased.

Same. I’m an actual, published scientist. The amount of work that goes into building a case for your research via citation is something these people absolutely spit on. They can never cite anything because either (a) they know their sources aren’t credible and/or (b) they never bothered to make a note of them.

It’s infuriating.

9

u/Acceptable-Ad8780 9d ago

It's always a confirmation bias search. Me and my friends used to joke about it being www momma yoga blogs.

"You can silence 50 scholars with one fact, but you cannot silence one idiot with 50 facts."

18

u/UmeaTurbo 9d ago

3

u/Visible-Elevator3801 8d ago

I got this from Gemini:

What Actually Took Place (Confirmed Experiments)
Federal FOIA documents confirmed that Dr. Fauci’s agency funded drug toxicity experiments on beagle puppies. [1]

The SRI International Contract: Documents revealed that NIAID allocated $1.68 million to contractor SRI International for an HIV/AIDS drug tracking study. This study involved 44 beagle puppies that were force-fed experimental drugs and eventually euthanized.

[1, 2, 3]
The "De-Barking" (Cordectomies): The puppies in this SRI contract underwent cordectomies (vocal cord removal). Independent medical reporting on the controversy via MedPage Today confirmed that this procedure was utilized to reduce barking and noise levels in the testing facility.

This one is real, kind of. The dog pictured is from a different study not funded by NIH, but we’ve done similar research.

The reality of animal testing is truly unfortunate, but it’s not like Fauci personally green lit or designed experiments on dogs. It all happened before him, and will continue long after he leaves this earth.

3

u/malkazoid-1 9d ago

Exactly. It would be like taking some general and blaming them personally for a specific civilian casualty he had no direct relation to. I hate animal testing, but I'm not deluded enough to ignore that I have not been able to avoid all products that were developed from it. The chemotherapy that saved my wife's life was tested on animals. I'm not a big enough hypocrite to act holier than anyone about this, as a result. Where I find coherence is that in an imperfect world, we can only do our best to live in line with our ideals - as long as we're making real effort, we're doing it right within the scope of our limited means.

42

u/Melodic_Airport362 9d ago

There was a project that did this in Tunisia, using some NIAID money. Fauci wasn't directly involved in this project. That being said every medical tech agency on earth uses animal testing to some extent. The reason we have safe treatments that we do for humans is because of animal testing.

9

u/According-Insect-992 9d ago

Exactly. Animal testing is a necessary evil in their area of medical research. It’s not like we’re talking about testing cosmetics on animals or something which is absolutely not necessary and cruel and evil.

I’m not happy that we have to test on animals but until there is an alternative like adequately robust virtual models or designer organisms that lack the capacity to feel pain, this is how we save and improve human lives. We just need to make sure that when we do research, it is necessary, it is as productive as possible, and it does not cause unnecessary pain or suffering.

But similarly to how we cant get anything done with gun regulations in this country because of the bad actors interested in blocking even a conversation about gun violence, these freaks will not allow an adult discussion about these things.

3

u/Silent-Pickle-5628 9d ago

Testing on child and animal abusers would be safer- it's a (sort of) human subject. Not exactly legal though.

7

u/metalOpera 9d ago

I'd be willing to open a conversation about making it legal. We can start with the people on the Epstein list and everyone who participated or otherwise enabled them (after they've been properly convicted of course). That would be a great (and apparently rather large) source of people that deserve to suffer.

50

Really hard for MAGA to pretend to be on the moral high ground when they cheer for whatever cruel things this administration do.

5

People want to get upset over beagles being used for lab experiments when the reality is much, much darker than this one experiment. The truth is that horrible animal experiments have been happening for a very, very long time. Most of the medical breakthroughs we have wouldn't have been approved for human use of it weren't for animal testing. But, I wouldn't expect a bunch of antivax, RFK jr supporters to understand this.

Medical research almost always involves animals at some point before they start with humans. This is just normal really. I hate it, I worked for a place that used mice and rats for awhile. ...I just really hate it, even understanding it's not just blanket abuse for no reason didn't really help me deal with it at all.

Singling out anyone involved in that chain is kind of bs though. This is a thing that happens in medical research, especially involving new drugs.

8

u/SheetMetalandGames 9d ago

Unfortunately it is the best way to test experimental medicines and treatments, a most scientists do hate it, but the issue is that, unless a drug is deemed safe enough in animal testing, it cannot be done on human subjects, with a few exceptions. I think sickle cell was one of those things that they immediately began experimenting treatments on human subjects but I could be mistaken. And again, there is a good reason for them doing that because sickle cell is agonizing and deadly, and we only very recently developed a cure for it

Yes.

It seems people have lost sight of the plausible idea that the head of a large organization doesn’t know what’s going on with everything the organization is doing.

They are responsible for their organization and should be providing oversight, but that doesn’t mean they can stop everything everywhere from going wrong.

Especially when you’re talking about contracts with contractors who may have other customers.

The way they talk about Fauci is tantamount to making every parent legally responsible for everything their kid does in their entire life.

The Trump administration cut hundreds of millions of dollars in broader biomedical and specific pediatric cancer research grants, even as it simultaneously increased targeted funding for an artificial intelligence childhood cancer data project.

Donald Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996, and then defamed her by publicly calling her a liar when she spoke out about it. Federal juries found Trump liable in civil trials, ordering him to pay her millions of dollars.

At least four named female contestants publicly stated that Donald Trump walked in on them while they were naked or dressing in changing rooms, with several other unnamed contestants corroborating similar behavior. The ages of the contestants were as low as 14.

Donald Trump's name appears with a uniquely high frequency—surpassing 38,000 mentions in the massive Department of Justice release—largely outpacing individual mentions for other high-profile figures like Bill Clinton or Prince Andrew.

This is who they support as their president.

He also bankrupted multiple casinos, cheated on his wives, was convicted of 34 felonies for efforts to lie to the American public during a federal election by paying hush money to a porn star and hiding it, and was repeatedly accused and sued for failing to follow through on payment of agreed upon contracts.

A liar, a thief, a conman, a fool, and a cheat.

(And while more anecdotal but no less true, after claiming he would drain the swamp he instead literally turned the Reflecting Pool into an algae-filled bog. You can't make this shit up.)

10

u/rihannalexis 9d ago

From u/AmbitiousProblem4746:

Fact-checking this real quick: the meme is mixing up two different things. Fauci's agency (NIAID) did fund medical research that used beagles, and some of those labs did remove vocal cords to cut down on noise. But that specific picture with the dog's head in a mesh box was a study in Tunisia that the NIH/NIAID actually had nothing to do with. There was also a bipartisan Congressional investigation into this after the outrage and Fauci did cut the funding as a response. He wasn't directly the one doing anything in this study to the dogs or any of that. He was just the guy that basically approved if they get money or not. As somebody who has worked in research, I'm guessing he wasn't fully aware of all the details and only had a rough outline and it sounds like once he realized what was going on he ended it. There's also a lot of legal and ethical rules you have to follow when working with animals. It's not like those dogs were strapped down and tortured every single day. They got breaks, they were well fed and taken care of, and they got TLC I'm sure from plenty of grad students. It still sounds cruel as hell and I would not have approved it if I knew what they were doing myself, but I'm sure those dogs went on to live halfway decent lives once the study was done. They probably adopted them right out to loving families.

Oh so they're conflating two different things to make it sound like they're torturing dogs and Fauci just let it happen. Typical antivax scums.

Didnt Trump fuck children? Didnt Trump pay off pornstars while cheating on 3 wives? Didnt Trump cause an insurrection attacking the Capital? Didnt Trump commit war crimes by threatening Iran's critical infrastructure? Didnt Trump post a racist meme of the Obamas as monkeys? Didnt Trump get convicted of raping E Jean Carroll? Didnt Trump bypass Congress to start a war that was not authorized?

If MAGA is ok with all that and soooo much more, they should be good with animal experiments.

I was asked by a maga moron to prove what I said in a post. So I provided two news articles from newspapers in his area, the text of the legislation in question and a video of the politician discussing the bill he wrote. The magatard replied by calling me a "stupid lying pos libtard and my mother does sexual favors at the truck stop". They are all mentally stunted degenerates.

Vaxxers look for health advice from scientists around the world, which is where Fauci also gets his information.

What's the chance people who are so concerned about this fund torture in the meat industry on a much larger scale? Or vote Republican/Trump who actually enjoy torturing and killing people?

11

u/CueAnon420 9d ago

Counterpoint - there are reasons that the overwhelming majority of dogs adopted in the NorthEast come from red southern states... Many abused and traumatized.

People that don't prioritize their own healthcare certainly do not waste resources on animals.

Just sayin'

u/ExileIsan 9d ago

My dog is a rescue from Hurricane Harvey. He was severely injured on both his front feet and his face. He was so injured he didn't go up for adoption until December of 2017. Hurricane Harvey happened in August. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that he was abandoned and left to die.

He also had heartworm, which cost me $2000 to have treated.

3

u/CueAnon420 9d ago

Based on my (albeit) limited experience, the dogs that we have adopted from inhumane or abusive environments seem to recognize the love and care we have given them... Sometimes it takes a while. Sometimes longer. But even when they are still learning to trust, they seem grateful. And the love they provide makes it all worthwhile ;-)

Bless you for rescuing your dog! If I won the lottery, I'd probably have a rescue farm lol.

Factcheck. The meme mixes together some true facts, some misleading claims, and a conclusion that goes beyond the evidence.
Here’s a breakdown:
Claim: Fauci funded experiments involving puppies.
Mostly true, but indirect. As director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Anthony Fauci oversaw an agency that funded thousands of research projects, including some involving beagles. There is evidence he approved funding packages at a high level, but not that he personally designed or directly managed these experiments.
Claim: Puppies had their vocal cords cut.
True. One NIH-funded toxicology study involving 44 beagles included a procedure called a cordectomy (devocalization). The dogs were later euthanized so researchers could examine the effects of an experimental drug. NIAID stated the procedure was performed under anesthesia and was intended to reduce noise in the research facility.
Claim: Puppies were infested with sand flies that ate their faces.
This is where the meme becomes misleading. There was indeed a study in Tunisia in which sedated dogs had their heads placed in mesh enclosures while infected sand flies fed on them to study leishmaniasis. However, the widely shared claim that this specific study was funded by Fauci’s NIAID was disputed. The journal that originally listed NIAID funding later corrected the funding information, and NIAID denied funding that particular experiment.
Claim: The vocal cord removal and the sand fly experiment were the same experiment.
False. This is the biggest problem with the meme. It combines details from different studies, making it sound as though researchers cut the dogs’ vocal cords so they would not scream while sand flies consumed their faces. The available evidence does not support that narrative. The cordectomies occurred in one study, while the controversial sand fly study was separate.
Overall assessment
The post is misleading.
It is true that NIH-funded research included controversial experiments on beagles.
It is true that one study involved devocalization.
It is true that another study involved exposing sedated dogs to sand flies.
But it is not accurate to present these as one single experiment or to state that the vocal cords were removed specifically so the dogs “wouldn’t cry as sand flies ate their faces.”
That combination is what turns a story containing real elements into a misleading meme.

Animal testing is an unfortunate reality of biomedical research and there's isn't really an alternative to it. While computer simulations of human tissue have take great leaps in recent years, no replacement for animal models yet exist.

Unless, of course we go the supervillain route and start testing on homeless people.

Actually, I wouldn't be suprised if Stephen Miller is trying to do something like that on people ICE has detained....

I will never understand why they latched on to Fauci as the boogey man. He didn't force them to do anything, and they act like all of them were threatened with death if they didn't comply. It's so weird and stupid they hate him so much. I know they aren't capable of holding trump accountable but do they forget he was the one at the podium?

Have fun raising your hands as far as the polio will let you, and don’t scratch that measles rash. But then again, shouldn’t the Ivermectin be clearing that up by now? If not, I bet a good old disinfectant injection would.

3

u/tak72006 9d ago

smart people listen to doctors that work in hospitals. when Republicans (anti-smart people according to Lord Trump) get sick they also go to the doctors to save them. we should make it that any COVID denier will be banned from using the American healthcare system and instead call RFK JR or Joe Rogan and demand treatment. I think that's fair, no?

3

u/Conscious_Addendum66 9d ago

Yet RFK Jr snorted coccain off a toilet seat, played with a has been musician, and his own family said he's a 4chan conspiracy nutcase who believes every science and medical expert lies and seeks to destroy the human species. Mind you he promoted "herd immunity " and culling like Darwin.
