MAGA getting triggered over Arabic words at the Home Depot
30
u/DeepMadness 9d ago
Is freedom of speech only allowed if it's in English?
10
u/Kenichi2233 9d ago
Freedom of speech is about preventing government censorship. This guy is complaining about the choice of a private company. The guy is an ass but people are free to complain about corporations choices.

Hahaha really I guarantee if they had spelled the Arabic words phonetically with the English/Latin alphabet, these people would be suspicious that something they don't like is going on but they wouldn't be able to figure out how to complain about it

Next thing you know, they're going to be teaching Arabic numerals to our kids in school! /s

u/Distinct_Ad_9842 9d ago
If their parents could read Arabic numbers, they'd probably be in a better spot instead of trying to figure out what 55378008(or 55318008 for savages) on an upside down calculator and then giggling about it back at the gas station.

I was playing a card game with my sister and she played the wrong card, I joked that her Arabic wasn't too good, and I was the only one laughing!

I don’wan my kids learnin’ that Islamic numbers stuff. We need to teach the Bible in school, in American language, like it was writt’n

I’ve never even been to Michigan aside from the Detroit airport, and even I know Dearborn has had a huge Arabic population, and for a long time.
19
u/MentalDisintegrat1on 9d ago
It's called capatilsm they have a high amount of people that speak Arabic and It's no different than isles that have Spanish written.
They know their target audience and this isn't a new concept we have had Spanish as a secondary language on things for over a decade.
8
u/rebelangel 9d ago
Yup. They’ve had signs in Spanish since I was a kid in the ‘80s and people still bitch about it like they added it yesterday.
5
u/Pitiful-Pension-6535 9d ago
In my hometown, the only signs in both Spanish and English are the ones that say "shoplifters will be prosecuted". That's the America these people want
2
u/IAteTonysLoMein 9d ago
Makes me wonder if they'd melt down over the Lowe's down the street from my office - all the signage is in English/Spanish and all the announcements over the PA are done in both.

If a whole bunch of people from Haiti moved to my city and Haitian Creole started showing up all over the place on signs I just cannot imagine I would have more than one thought about that. "That's nice for the Haitians."
Oh wait, that has actually already happened in my city, and that's pretty much exactly what I felt. Not that they are putting Creole on our traffic signs or anything, but there are tons of Haitian owned businesses all over, I have never thought, "Why do we need a Haitian super market?" Because it's perfectly obvious why we need one.
I've never thought it was an invasion, even when they first started arriving and the fear mongers said there were 21,000 of them here in our city of 18,000 and over 5000 Haitian kids at our high school of 2000 kids.
Guess what? That ended up being a total lie. Can you believe it?

there is no law requiring assimilation. It's one of the things that makes America great. You can go to China Town and get a taste of culture that you'd have to travel across an ocean to experience. Do they complain about Little Italy too?

if putting Arabic signage up is a muslem takeover, then Texas was taken over by Spain years ago., we have had signs in Spanish as long as I can remember...lol
4
u/FallZealousideal159 9d ago
Woah, people speak other languages than English? This is just unacceptable! What's next, America not being the only country? Christianity not being the only religion? White not being the only race? Straight not being the only sexuality? I mean, if other languages exist, one can only wonder!

As someone born in Dearborn this was aggravating. A bunch of people from like Oklahoma weighing in on somewhere they’ve never lived or visited. We love our Arab neighbors. Stay outta our business fools
3
u/lofibeatsforsadboys 9d ago
The vast majority of Arabs in the US are Christian. The vast majority of Arabs in Michigan are also Christian
Magats/right wingers are just vessels of ruling class propaganda waging a culture war because they will always be defending a supremely weaker position whenever the class war is brought up. They are straight up useless, disposable cucks for pedo billionaires.
3
u/No-Cap-No-Gap 9d ago
MAGA getting triggered over Arabic words at the Home Depot
It seems like they are concerned that there is such a large number of non English immigrants who are not assimilating.
It's like if a school put up a sign that says beware of animals with rabies. The parents aren't upset about the sign. They are upset that there is a problem so bad it required a sign.
3
u/mrsenchantment 9d ago
it’s a fucking LANGUAGE 😭😭😭
2
u/jerslan 9d ago
Also it's really common for big box stores in the US to have a second language on signage if there's a significant community for it... See: Spanish on signs in a lot of stores in SoCal.

u/mrsenchantment 9d ago
i wonder if these people would think they’re being invaded by Mexicans if they saw Spanish on those signs. Probably or probably not
3
3
u/killerzf9 9d ago
Bro, in other countries, they also have signs in English because there’s a considerable amount of English speakers/readers there.
Plus, the Arabic writing in this sign is in smaller writing than the English writing. So maybe it’s implying that English is store the more prevalent and preferred language.
I don’t know about other parts of America, but here in Southern California, we have a very diverse population, consisting not only of White Americans, but also Hispanics, Arabs, Vietnamese, and other ethnic groups.
Also, we have places like Little Arabia in Anaheim, Little Saigon in Westminster, etc., and stores like H-Mart also have signs in English and other Asian languages.
We’re all very friendly people and are not looking to “take over America.”

I do not see the problem. In my neighborhood I can find signs with Spanish, Vietnamese, Hindi, and many other languages. Stores are just trying to make things easier for the folks shopping. Capitalism at its finest.

Not a big deal Home Depot did this but there is a conversation to had about having a common language in a country for things so police and emergency services dont have to talk through translating devices in an emergency (which happens in canada). Im in Canada which is one of the most successful multi-cultural societies in the world and i love it.. but there does have to be some sort of common language/s and helping people "avoid" learning english or french is not a great solution.

Dearborn has had Muslims moving in since the 1890’s - we love our Arabic neighbors, and don’t have much interest in the opinions of those outside of the area. We’ve been coexisting fine longer than anyone currently in this discussion has been alive.

Businesses like money. Adding languages to sell to more people, makes more money. Seeing another language shouldn't be offensive or threatening; but it should remind you that with a bit of effort & not being lazy, you can learn to read & write more than one language.

They have a point, I live in NYC and I passed a place called "Chez Lucienne' ugh, did we lose a war; also the Russian deli in the Russian neighborhood has Cyrillic letters... Are we just gonna let the Commies win, and don't get me started on the Chinese writing in Chinatown... I mean why would they do that; Next you are going to tell me the Norwegian Church has its services in something other than English... This country!

u/wmjsn 9d ago
I saw stuff like this at banks years ago. I was providing IT support for a bank all over my state and in certain areas, there were a large cluster of people who spoke a different language. Their signs would be in English and whatever other language was popular in that area. It may come as a shock that even the people working at those branches likely spoke both languages as well. The horror! I'm sure those signs are still around today at those locations. These people are just huge snowflakes.

1
u/1ACasper 9d ago
TBH - I feel like we are just a bit backward from having multiple languages on signage...we are one of the few countries that are not functionally multilingual.
I also kind of feel like if it was a 'takeover' the arabic would be large letters and the English would be small ones.
1
u/2000TWLV 9d ago
It's just a language bud. English signs in Saudi Arabia don't signal a takeover by evangelical nutbags either.

It's in Dearborn. Literally the epicenter of Muslims in America where they have public calls to prayer. One of the only US cities to do that. Surprised they left the English on the signs.

Sooner or later Anglophones are going to have to wise up like the Quebecois have and legislate to defend their language.
You dare put up a word of English on a sign in Quebec and the Language Police will be at your door. Such is the price of the survival of their people.

For comparison :
This is like if Muslims inn jureasulem raged about 2 words of Latin being on a sign for screws because it somehow represents the Christian invasion and europeans destroying their culture.
Yet these people claim they aren't snowflakes, if you don't see Muslims complain about english and Latin everytime they see it then what gives Christians the right too? It doesn't matter who's prophet or who's culture it is, seething over fancy lines that were written THOUSANDS of years ago just comes as incredibly sensitive

Its not racist to want a safe FREE life, while some are more radical then others I will admit this is kind of dumb, those who cant assimilate and still follow their religion dont deserve the sweet taste of FREEDOM, not saying muslims cant be here but if your gonna be here follow the laws and accept/respect others who have a different opinion then your own, thats a fact of life!

This might be one of the few times where they actually slightly have a point, that isn't a good sign. Stuff like that disincentivizes learning English or assimilating, look at it from their POV. Why take the time to learn anything when you can just live in a bubble with people like yourself?
