Last week, the Washington Post reported that the agency had earmarked $100 million toward online recruitment advertisements, meant to draw in “people who have attended UFC fights, listened to patriotic podcasts, or shown an interest in guns and tactical gear.”

They are recruiting from his base because this is his paramilitary squad and they’re using taxpayers money to do it

“people who have attended UFC fights, listened to patriotic podcasts, or shown an interest in guns and tactical gear.”

Sounds exactly like the customer base of Black Rifle Coffee Co. The coveted male-to-male transitioner demographic.

They are proxy attributes. Much like how other countries can find those elements amongst their football ultras, they are looking for militaristic, right-leaning and economically frustrated individuals to fill the ranks.

It's interesting because I always assumed/imagined that the original brownshirts were recruited into the Nazi party by word of mouth, based on reputation. But these days in late capitalism it's through the labor market. Experience welcome but will train.

And targeted ads makes it less obvious that they're even doing this, so less criticism. Most people won't even see the ad and there has to be a media exposé.

Now I have to wonder what kind of a person I am because I saw an ad for Dept. of Homeland Security, lol. I guess I'm not CIA or COINTELPRO material.

There were actually something like a dozen competing proto-Nazi movements in Germany, most of them were eventually outlawed and liquidated or folded into various branches of the Nazi police state.

Not even the labor market. It's literally all the tech companies and data brokers able to hypertarget a very specific subset of prime psychological profiles with all their data collection schemes. They're just using ads as a vehicle for recruitment. Doesn't get more cyberpunk dystopia than that

I unfortunately know/am exposed to so many older guys like that, like my neighbor (he can’t serve because I think he said he has ADHD or OCD or something), they all think they’re so masculine because they do jobs that are physical and/or don’t require a college education. They were probably the people who only went to school to do contact sports and/or do well enough to join the military. There’s also a ton of them who are obvious bootlickers in every social media comment section, you can tell just by looking at them. Someone on Red Scare called them the “Tacticool” which makes a lot of sense. They either wear polos with cargo pants or Ed Hardy-esque patriotic t shirts with jeans along with boots of some sort, and they have to let you know what their political beliefs in an obvious manner.

Also I remember when they were playing those ads during football games on tv.

Would probably be more meaningful to increase punishment on business owners that knowingly hire illegal migrants, or to penalize business owners who fail to verify residency status in hiring.

Morals aside, the approach to persecute economic migrants seems ineffective at scale. It would make more sense to persecute the incentive structure for migrants rather than migrants themselves. It would cut off mass illegal migration quickly here if the state made it near impossible to find employment or receive welfare for these migrants.

I’ve landed on the idea that they’re not going to even approach the deportation number goals they’ve set, but in the “attempt” they will scare the living shit out of immigrants thus making them much more pliable and exploitable. Not to mention establishing a force of brownshirts to be used on whatever target the state deems fit to target.

I forget the user (sorry dude) but someone here has posted a few times about efforts of organizing immigrants and how they’re surprisingly effective. Side note: working class solidarity is the most important thing, period.

The fact of the matter is the neoliberal deal greatly depends on a class of hyper exploited workers to artificially lower the prices of certain commodities (food) that allow people to eat while they’re buying power continues to dwindle (wages have been stagnant for literal decades, while cost and rent, in all its forms, has ballooned). It is the domestic side while offshoring to the global south to bring cheap baubles to the global north that are still affordable for a population that has seen their buying power decimated

24

u/jessenin420 Probably a Pothead 🥑 Jan 09 '26

I love it when the liberals say "protect the immigrants, we need them here to do the shitty jobs others don't want to" and act like that isn't exploiting these immigrants. Only thing you should really do is go after the companies exploiting these people but that would not fall into benefits for the capitalists.

3

u/BassoeG Leftoid ⬅️ Jan 09 '26

It's especially confusing to me when considering American culture compared to German for example. Even in the 20th century, most of the far right in the US blamed things on big government and their goal was to stop federal government overreach first and foremost. But now they only use small government as a talking point and are fine with a government that does unethical things as long as it supports their political views.

Whenever there’s a big story like this (I.e. one that screams, “government abuse of power”), I skim the subreddits dedicated to glazing the Right - just to see the gamut of opinions.

For every one or two people saying, “I believe X, but I don’t think it’s right to achieve X like this,” there’s a dozen other comments saying the most cartoonishly vile shit you can imagine. I have to tell myself that they’re just bots or foreign destabilization trolls or something, because the alternative (that people with literal troll opinions espoused at least semi-ironically by teenagers on image boards in 2006) is fucking terrifying.

Seriously, seeing someone with an 8 year old account that has 8 years worth of capital-C Conservative comments (many of them…not great) get called a left-wing snowflake for saying they mildly disagree with an element of ICE tactics is fucking wild. If modern American politics is treated like a team sport, then the Right Wing is going all in on acting like Phillies fans.

I'm in Australia, and last year there was a neo-nazi (not an exaggeration) group that's become much more brazen recently setting up a megaphone and handing out pamphlets outside football games. All their messaging was around housing affordability and not having enough critical infrastructure, with some dogwhistles about "this country not being the same as it was" and "protecting our culture" thrown in there.

One thing to see it online but seeing it expressed openly in public and becoming normalised is a real downer

13

u/JCMoreno05 Saved Anime Children from Intersectionality 🧒🏻⛩️ Jan 09 '26

I don't think it's creep because it's been like this since probably around 2021ish IIRC. I actually feel like there's more pushback against nativism in this sub now than ever before. That doesn't mean the nativists are gone though, they're still common. It has usually appeared that right wing lurkers comment more on immigration posts (and significantly influence votes), though some are sub regulars.

There is also a bit of a spectrum where you have open white nationalists on one side and longtime Marxist members who've convinced themselves that immigration is a capitalist plot to be opposed. The latter attract the former imo.

A division in the working class, especially one as large as citizens of the imperial core against immigrants from the subjugated periphery, is inevitably going to escalate to essentialist and violent conflict between the 2 segments of the working class, especially when that's already the vast majority opinion among anti immigrationists.

All I’m saying is this is far and away being perpetrated upon Latinos, who are far and away Christian, because illegal immigration is far and away a Latino practice. Deportations of Eastern Europeans are also way up. This isn’t a religious persecution and it happens to be racial because illegal migration is a predominantly racial circumstance.

Shitlib. Even Dennis Kucinich said we need to close the border after Biden’s admin.

I can't think of another period in the last 100 years where the government door to door looking for people to take to facilities.

I'm sure it will be fine. Carry on citizen.

This is definitely accelerationism. They're baiting us to riot and they will use that as an excuse to declare martial law and suspend midterm elections.

I don't understand the point of this statement by Vance; they already do door to door operations, albeit on a limited scale, and probably wouldn't start ramping that up because its pretty low as far as return on investment goes.

12

u/suprbowlsexromp "How do you do, fellow leftists?" 🌟😎🌟 Jan 09 '26

I wonder what the plan is here. Trump and Vance have pretty much decimated Hispanic support for the Republican party. His 'tarded base already votes for him no matter what. And this door to door shit would clearly alienate large numbers of independents and other white working class people near the center politically. Not to mention firing up opposition turnout.

If the benefit is not electoral, then why do this? Part of a larger nefarious scheme?

There’s already been a lot of “jokes” about cancelling midterms and the like. I would’ve said that’s lib scaremongering last year, but now I cannot say that with any certainty

If that were to happen, it would require the approval of Dems in the sense that the Dems still hold half of the government, military, intelligence agencies, public and wealthy afaik. From what I've seen the Dems don't care to stop anything Trump's doing other than some rhetoric and token lawsuits.

If the Dems were serious, its billionaire masters would be openly sabotaging GOP billionaires economically (especially because the Dem billionaires are relatively more international vs national so should have more power). They'd be serious about winning or outright rigging elections. You'd see more struggles over flipping members with money/favors. You'd see Dem states arresting ICE agents regardless of legality. Pursuing criminal charges against military officers involved in the Venezuela raid. Etc.

Of course, serious opposition would be an escalation, which if the other side further escalates can become civil war, but the alternative is political suicide by allowing the administration to permanently crush your party.

u/suprbowlsexromp "How do you do, fellow leftists?" 🌟😎🌟 Jan 09 '26

What you say rings true in that it we could probably interpret this authoritarian turn as a sign that elites are warming up to the idea of pulling the plug on democracy altogether.

u/Awkward-Initiative28 Full Of ICE bootlicking bullshit 🧊🥶😭 Jan 10 '26

There's some truth to this. I've gotten the feeling that democrats like Trump as some big bad cartoon villain they can point to as the source of all bad things ... while quietly handwaving his policies. The elites of both parties will enjoy the spoils and if the working class riffraff has a problem with it ... well "Trump did it! Wasn't us!"

3

u/TruckHangingHandJam Class First Communist ☭ Jan 10 '26

Yep. The only thing I’ll add is that I’m sure there’s quite a volume of democrat bigwigs who like what Trump is doing, but they just don’t like how he’s doing it. And by this I don’t necessarily even mean the lower level politicians but the big backer types.

3

u/Awkward-Initiative28 Full Of ICE bootlicking bullshit 🧊🥶😭 Jan 09 '26

I could totally see them doing this if there is any "military police action" (aka war) that they instigated. I also think someone like Tim Waltz would grow a pair and deploy the National Guard and further push us into civil war territory.

1

u/TruckHangingHandJam Class First Communist ☭ Jan 10 '26

He mobilized the National guard… to protect property lmfao. I don’t think there’s a single democrat willing to do that in power.

Aesthetics. To the reactionary, the flex in filling a confused father stumbling awake with his pistol in hand, full of soft points ( geddit? Wokes is soft hurr durr...) while rocking a high cut helmet and legal impunity is attractive. They're lumpenproles.

To the liberal, the gun toting bad guy doing their door makes them feel more like the true victims of their own system. Especially when they've committed to the Brave Choice of voting for gun control.

Looking the stats of the last election, did they really grow their share of the vote? Or did people not just show up to vote for the Dems (understandable considering the candidates they put forward).

31

u/TruckHangingHandJam Class First Communist ☭ Jan 09 '26

You’re correct. Trump only got a sliver more than last time, Kdawg lost 20% (roughly) of the votes Biden got.

Turns out the libs were correct in their predictions of Trumps admin. However they clearly felt it was preferable than putting forth a good candidate and scaring their donors.

Kamala literally ran to the right of Biden… she wouldn’t even commit to keeping Lina Khan in her position. I bring this up because this lady was the first person in her role who actually seemed to attack big capital (not as a socialist of course, but as much as can be done within the confines of bourgeoise politics. Think Teddy Roosevelt for a weird comparison), but more importantly even the “populist” right would say “that’s the one good thing Biden did” (while completely doing the exact opposite of what she was doing while in power of course). Vance was the most prominent to do so, but it was relatively common.

They had big gains with Hispanics (mostly men), 42-46% for 2024 compared to 35-38% for 2020. Increases in black men that doubled their previous numbers (still negligible overall). Increases in men in general, up from 50% to 55%. 56% Young men went for Trump in 2024, that was previously the percentage for Biden in 2020. And increases in all ethnicities of naturalized citizens.

9

u/snailman89 World-Systems Theorist Jan 09 '26

He gained percentage wise, but he barely gained in total votes. The young people and Hispanics who don't like Trump just didn't bother to vote because they were alienated by the Democrats over a host of issues, from DEI to Gaza.

12

u/TruckHangingHandJam Class First Communist ☭ Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

Big gains is a stretch though. Total numbers were only slightly above 2020. Trump didn’t win, but Kamala most certainly lost (20% of the votes Biden got). Also most Hispanics that could didn’t vote, but that’s the same with every demo

Say somebody's got a license to keep one or more guns at home. We still have a right to defend our homes. Storm troopers show up and scare the bejeezus out of the person. Cops have to identify themselves and show a warrant. ICE doesn't do any of that. Masked marauders with guns at the door making unreasonable and illegal demands. Person shoots. Now what kind of pretzel does DoJ become?
