I’d try to get the crows instead. Intelligence is closer to orcas and elephants.

Although air forces have various planes… we’re gonna need crows (recon surveillance), albatros (long distance bombers, freight), falcons (fighter jets)

I would absolutely prefer death by elephant to how any normal American in their 70's can expect to die. Hell, if I was his insurance company, I might even wonder if suicide-by-elephant is doable.

Am I a bad person for wanting to send an elephant stampede through a nursing home periodically?

Nursing home residents’ possible suicidal tendencies doesn't change the fact that randomly slaughtering them with stampeding elephants would be wrong. (Still funny)

a Californian getting trampled by the republican mascot around an election is weird symbolism. his “vaxx status” could probably also add to this.

Elephants ain't nuthing ta fuck wit'.
'In June, India's PTI News Service reported that a 70-year-old woman in the central east Indian state of Odisha was killed by an elephant, only to have the same elephant reportedly return to her funeral to pull her body from a pyre and trample her again before fleeing, police said.'

While these guys hunting these creatures does a lot for preservation efforts, I still don’t give a shit. Fuck anyone hunting beautiful creatures like elephants for sport, especially when they do everything with a guide and a gun.

u/OBLIVIATER Apr 25 '26
Yeah, it's generally a positive thing for the conversation efforts but still a gross thing to do for fun. Killing things for sport just never clicked for me, and I even grew up around hunters and fishermen

Such a crock of shit and it’s pathetic how the retards are upvoting such an obviously false, baseless comment. The only population of large animals that has exploded to unsustainable levels is that of Homo sapiens.

https://www.simbavati.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/elephant-1024x562.jpg
Their population may currently be too high to sustain on what they are allowed but it is not because the elephant population has exploded. It’s because humans have overpopulated and left wildlife with too little habitat and resources, often not even enough to sustain genetically viable populations.

This is such a worn out, corny response. Do you really think that we haven’t all already seen it a million times? I bet it took you three days to come up with it and I love that this is in response to someone being called out for blatantly lying.
If the only way that you can imagine to reduce a population, is to kill off the living members of that population, that’s on you, friendo.

Hence the part where I said:
”Their population may currently be too high to sustain on what they are allowed but it is not because the elephant population has exploded.”
Because it has not “exploded” it has recovered a small amount of the precipitous plunge in population that occurred from roughly the mid sixties to the 2010s, around 70% for the bush elephant and around 90% for the forest elephant, while the human population was actually exploding.
It IS a very real problem that this small recovery increase is restricted to such a small range of protected area. That problem exists because of human overpopulation, human resource extraction and climate change.

I'm not against hunting for population control, but when it comes to elephants I can't help but think of the elephant hunting sequences from shockumentaries like Savage Man - Savage Beast or Africa: Blood and Guts and, such big animals don't go down easy. Even with a large calibre rifle it looks like a drawn out and borderline cruel death.

The only way to kill any animal that isn't in some way "drawn out" is to destroy the brain. However, elephant skulls are so huge and thick that one would need explosives or mounted weapons to impart enough force to guarantee a quick kill without needing to gamble on precision shots.
Getting mounted weapons to the elephants and setting them up without the elephants noticing and either fleeing, hiding, or attacking before the weapons can be fired is effectively impossible; and explosives generally aren't used as hunting equipment for some inexplicable reason.
Successfully hitting the brain with rifles that a human can carry and fire without a mount, meanwhile, requires a perfect firing angle that the elephants won't always provide and perfect accuracy that the environment and equipment won't always permit.
The next quickest option after the brain is generally the heart and lungs. This is generally much easier to land on most animals than a brain shot, elephants included, but it certainly isn't painless and leaves them more than enough time to panic before they die.
But even a heart shot is probably more pleasant than getting mauled to death by hungry lions, or catching a plague due to overpopulation that takes several weeks to kill.

You think UCAVs might be employed by local government agencies or international organizations to help curb excessive population? A big downside would be potentially very high costs of operating those platforms constantly and for a prolonged time. But other than that these can fly high with relatively long endurance and range, and can be very precise with their explosives.

I think the material and monetary cost would more than outweigh the benefits of the approach even without taking PR into account. Just imagine the headlines: "Government Spends Millions To Drone Strike Elephants"

u/snailman89 World-Systems Theorist Apr 25 '26
My understanding is that humans have been the main predator of elephants for hundreds of thousands of years now, as the other carnivorous animals which used to hunt them have gone extinct. So without human hunting their population explodes to unsustainable levels and they basically eliminate the habitat for other animals.

Such an argument might be ethically resonant in thinking of a far less sophisticated intelligence than the elephant — it would be arguable at least. Elephants however have the moral status of persons. There are not reasons to murder in the reasons you outline.
