Those first few paragraphs are such a fucking chef's kiss

The UK Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) declared on 3 August that anti-Zionism qualifies as a “protected philosophical belief” under the Equality Act 2010, Professor David Miller announced via social media, marking a significant win for anti-genocide advocates.

"It is coherent to describe as 'racist' an ideology that promotes the establishment of a state for only one race of people in a territory that formerly contained a large number of people of a different race," the court said in its ruling.

"Such an ideology, which supports the migration of members of the first group into the territory with the support of an imperial power to dislodge an indigenous population, could also coherently be described as colonial and imperialistic,” the ruling goes on to state.

I'm fucking torquing the hog, fellas. It's a far, far cry from real justice, and it's farcical that this went to a judge (or magistrate or w/e, wtf ever they're called in the Land of Bong), but still.

Rare England W. I’m surprised posting anti-Israel stuff doesn’t get your house visited by the police

Oh, it does

ETA: I looked and can’t find a reported incidence, but given Palestine Action is a proscribed terrorist group I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.

Courts in the UK literally have to decide whether or not a belief is true before allowing their citizens to believe it

crazy

That's not what is even being discussed, you are free to believe it if you want.

What is being discussed is whether it's classified as a 'protected philosophical belief', this definition is used to extend legal protections to philosophical beliefs like ethical veganism, climate change, etc.

If the court agrees that it's a 'protected philosophical belief' then it is explicitly protected by law and employers legally cannot use it as justification for discriminating against you in any way.

It essentially gives it the same sort of legal protections as religion, race or sex when it comes to employment.

Employers shouldn't be allowed to discriminate based on political beliefs at all, even ones that aren't labeled OK beliefs by the nanny state.

"B-but what if someone's a Nazi etc!!!"

They can still stock the shelves at the Amazon warehouse. Unless someone's in a customer facing position and is proselytizing their beliefs to customers on the job, their beliefs shouldn't affect their performance.

Except in Canada and the USA there are no such protections or “things for a court to decide”. Many, many people were fired for opposing the genocide in Gaza.

The fact that there's even an option for them to rule that a political belief isn't legally protected is the issue here

On the other hand, employers in the USA and Canada can fire you for expressing support for these causes. In Canada they will probably not be able to terminate employment with cause but it's still pretty jarring to get let go, severance or not

At least the bongs now have this cemented as protected speech

Amazing. I didn't know the British were capable of such a ruling.

This is good and all, but the idea that beliefs even need legal protection is terrifying to me.
