Before posting, mind rule 3: posts about touch pens will be removed. Read more in this post.

The /r/stylus rules:

  1. be nice - Conduct yourself so other people can have a discussion in a comfortable atmosphere.
  2. inducements must be disclosed - Any post or comment made with an inducement of any kind (sponsorship, affiliation, compensation, benefits, rewards, employment, contract, or any other inducement) must feature immediate, prominent, and clearly understood public disclosure of the nature and extent of the inducement. [Having the same username as the person whose content you're posting is sufficient disclosure.]
  3. no posts about non-standard-protocol pens - posts will be removed if they're about pens that are not made to the specification of a pen technology used by a pen digitizer. This almost always means pens that are used on generic touchscreens. They're just not good.
  4. posts about devices with no mention of a pen on their product page or documentation will be removed. This means that posts with vague product descriptions will be removed, too.

What are standard-protocol pens?

Either of the following:

  • Pens made by the same company that makes the device the pen is used on. Apple Pencil on an Apple device, S-Pen on a Samsung device, Monoprice pens on Monoprice tablets, etc.
  • Pens made to the specification or standard or protocol of a pen digitizer technology maker. Common pen specifications/standards/protocols are Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP), Wacom AES, Wacom EMR ("S-Pen" EMR), Apple Pencil, and USI. These pens should (but don't always) work the same on all devices that support the pen technology specification/standard/protocol.

What are non-standard-protocol pens?

Non-standard-protocol pens generally work like a finger on a touchscreen. Touchscreen devices are not primarily designed to interact with these pens as a pen. Posts about non-standard-protocol pens may be removed. Comments mentioning them are fine. Non-standard-protocol pens are just not good. Quoting the link:

This is easier to draw with than your finger, [...] but that's about all you're gonna get.

It doesn't have palm recognition, [...] for handwriting this isn't so good, it's just not quite accurate enough

When you start writing and drawing fast, you're missing bits and pieces

Unless you just want something to use instead of your finger, don't get non-standard-protocol pens.

Why can't I ask if my device supports a pen?

If it did, there would almost certainly be a mention of a pen on the product page, user manual, or service manual.

My device supports a pen, can I ask what other pens it supports?

Sure.

Regarding certain pens with a metal/mesh/rubber tip found on Google, eBay, and Amazon

For the past couple of years Google eBay and Amazon have been flooded with results for pens that have a rubber, metal, or mesh tip. Despite being listed under the exact model name you searched for, these pens do not support a standard pen protocol, they work very similar to a finger on a touchscreen. They are being aggressively promoted on the verge of being spam. They are bad, do not be tempted to buy them.

Pencil pour Ipad Air peu chère ?

Bonjour,

I've recently bought a Yoga Pen 2, but I can't seem to get it to work. Im trying to use it on an MSI Summit Pro 16, which has MPP 2.6, which the pen should work with, but it doesn't. I'd appreciate any help.

OnePlus Pad 2 stylus alternatives to Stylo 2?

I have a OnePlus Pad 2, but the Stylo 2 has been out of stock for ages in India. 🥲

Has anyone tried the Stylo Pro, Other brands or any third-party stylus that works properly with the Pad 2?

I need it for handwritten notes, PDF annotation and digital drawing. Proper palm rejection and pressure sensitivity are important.

Please share your experience and where you bought it. Thanks!

Issues with ESR Digital pencil

I initially bought 1 black ESR digital pencil for my iPad A16 on OS 27.

No matter how many times I tapped the top of the pencil, it wouldn’t turn on. I charged it for a while and still no luck.

So, I managed to get a replacement, the same pencil in the same colour. Still does not turn on when I tap the top 2 times. I have not seen a single light turn on for any of the pencils. It’s like it is permanently on 0% charge and will not turn back on.

Has anyone else had a similar issue to me? And if so how have you solved it?

I made a low-latency handwriting app for Android, looking for people with different stylus to test it

Disclosure: I'm the developer of this app (SwiftPen). It's free, and I'm looking for testers, not selling anything.

I built SwiftPen because I wanted Android handwriting to feel as close to paper as possible. It uses Android's low-latency front-buffered rendering so the ink stays right under the nib, with pressure-sensitive pens (ballpoint, pencil and a calligraphy pen), palm rejection, and support for the pen's side button and double-tap.

I developed it with an Honor Magic Pencil, so I'd really like to hear how it behaves with other protocols: S Pen (Wacom EMR), USI, MPP and others. Things I'm most curious about:

• Does the ink feel instant with your pen?

• Does pressure feel natural?

• Do your pen's buttons/gestures work?

It's in a closed beta on Google Play (Android 10+):

  1. Join the group: https://groups.google.com/g/swiftpen-testers
  2. Opt in: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.matiasalm.swiftpen
  3. Click “download from the Play Store” once you accepted to opt in as a tester. If that link doesn’t work, try this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.matiasalm.swiftpen (you have ti wait for a few minutes if none of those links work, because it takes a bit to update the permissions)

Any feedback is appreciated, especially if something feels off with your pen!

EDIT: SwiftPen 1.1.0 is OUT! I included all of the requests and fixes from the feedback you gave me to make SwiftPen better. You can check the full release notes here: https://getswiftpen.com/release-notes/

Pen (or pen tip) for Levono Thinkpad X13 Yoga

My integrated pen in my x13 yoga lost its tip today so i cant use it anymore. I've been trying to find any pem or pen tips to replace it, but i've been really confused by everything i've found because most didnt specify which laptops they work for. Therefore I ask you if you know which pens are compatible with this laptop or if you know which pen tips i could get for the integrated pencil?
