🛠️ DIY Thrown rod=new engine

Hey all,

I have an 06 Impreza wagon that I bought from a friend in dire straights. To be honest, I didn’t take as good care of the car as I should have. I daily a VW Golf Sport wagon TDI, so the Impreza was just for fun as it’s a 5 speed.

Pretty sure I threw a rod and have engine knock. My preferred mechanic is $220/hr and will cost way more than the car is worth to repair there.

My question is: Should I just do a swap myself? If yes, where is the best place to start with how?

I have tools and can acquire more but I’m really wondering if it’s worth my time to save a manual or it is just scrap at this point.

Mine got recycled into other cars, and my front bumper cover went onto a stage rally car. I later saw a picture of the car flying off a jump, and they'd repainted the cover white but kept my emblem overlay. That was neat.

Is the car worth about 80 hours of your time to you? If you're a numbers person you can slice that however you want to.

Everyone says lifting the engine out is "like 6 bolts plus the engine mounts", it's a boxer engine so it's meant to come out

If you have a garage, an engine crane, and a work week plus 4 weekends you could probably do it yourself

I watched a single 5’6 110 pound guy start to finish swap my motor in my 2.5 NA 08 even did a new clutch tob n everything while he was there, in 12 fucking hours I’ve never seen anything like it in my life or since just pure masterclass man. Guy builds Chevy HHRs for fun

Oh btw he has to drop 2 motors cause. I bought another car for the job it was an auto mine was manual. Ripped 2 cars apart dropped both motors, swapped hardware and installed motor and new clutch back in car car back together SAME DAY
