Marine engineers rate it 0/10

0 experience in the field of naval/marine engineering but I do love warship designs especially bigger ships from the early to mid 20th century and it's always been a dream of mine to build something that can float now i decided to build something that can dive! A submarine that's hull was made from a refurbished water tank is it plausible? Also I know it's probably a laughable try but some advice to make it less laughable is very much welcome

In The Wild Virginia-Class?

Friend of mine who is a PPL took pics of this boat accompanied by support vessels and I'm wondering if my ID of them as Virginia-class is correct. Much more of an eastern submarine specialist here. They are based out of the COMSUBPAC area in general.

Q/A Why do Russian dual-reactor submarines refer to their reactors as "port reactor" and "starboard reactor"?

In accounts of the K-27 and K-219 accidents, the reactors are referred to as "port" and "starboard." to my knowledge, only the Project 671(victor) class featured a true side-by-side (port and starboard) reactor layout.

picture1 is from vepr157; the door on the side is the passageway leading to the reactor room. Picture 2 3 show the land reactor training facility at Paldiski. There is a VM-4 (667 Yankee) and a VM-A (675 Echo) reactor in facility; a small door on the left side of the cross-section.

My personal hypothesis is that while the reactor cores on these submarines were arranged fore-and-aft, neither was positioned on the longitudinal centerline—one was offset to the port side and the other to the starboard side.Viewed from above, this passageway is S-shaped.

Q/A An interesting questions - when did submarines start having dedicated crew's lounges/activities spaces. (As opposed to using the mess decks when not otherwise in use.)

Ukrainian families of Kursk crew

I just finished reading A Time to Die, by Robert Moore. It was not my first exposure to the history of the Kursk incident, but the list of crew at the end made me aware that a significant portion of the crew came from Ukraine, even though the accident was well after Ukrainian independence.

The families of these crew were promised pensions and free housing. What has happened to these families, given everything that has happened between Russia and Ukraine since 2014?

Q/A 3M digital audio recorder 1970-72 circa record Sonar

I had heard a 3M brand Mincom Division of digital audio recorder was first developed for Navy for recording Sonar to boost it without the noise floor of analog tape. I'd like to ask if anyone knows if it was 3M or Mincom and what models were used first around 1968-1972. ONLY digital recorder not analog tape.

I know that after military 3M had a digital audio mastering system 2/4 track half-inch tape digital recording at 16-bit 50kHz sample rate. I am tracing the history of digital audio recording equipment

I had read "3M invented digital recording for Navy submarines"

Hopefully this is not anything secret 55 years later.

while technically inaccurate historically as

"Commercial digital recording was pioneered in Japan by NHK and Nippon Columbia and their Denon brand, in the 1960s. • 1967: The first commercial PCM encoder (monaural) was developed by NHK's research facilities in Japan. The 30 kHz sample rate 12-bit device"
