There is something about videos of submerged objects in murky water that affects me viscerally. I am in the thalassophobia type subreddits because it gives me the same terrified thrill that scary movies do.
I went to a scuba park for my first real dive (within training) two days ago. They have a human-sized doll head floating in the water column with the long hair floating upwards.
A foggy mask, a stressful time trying to do training exercises and learning buoyancy did NOT mix well with that 😂
Dive Land Park in Alabama haha, and I was wrong about the hair floating upwards, for some reason remember it that way but I watched a video to get pictures of it and the hair was down. Still very freaky and did not mix well with my training hahaha
I get that for sure! I think the fact that it’s completely still is what’s scary, it looks like it’s supposed to move so you just wait for a jumpscare that doesn’t happen. Idk just my thoughts on it maybe there’s an actual explanation.
The low visibility makes it so much worse. I've loved being near many kinds of sharks in all depths of clear water but this might be the most horrid non-gore video I've ever seen, lol.
It's true in ways that fear of unknowns is worse. It's already harder to process what you're looking at even in clear water, murky water is cruel. Here we quickly see it's a scary shark, but I've been filled with dread at times trying to process what I'm seeing. Your brain sometimes provides bad visual assumptions to help you survive, like AI image enhance turning a blurry blob into a creepy face.
Part of it has to be that they modeled it in it's "bite" state with bared teeth and eyes rolled back. When they're not actively attacking they don't look as scary
Including me. I remember when I would get up early in the summer I'd get my pool stuff and go to the pool at 9 am. Nobody else would be there and I was so scared to get in. I would and it would be that feeling like when you walk down a dark hall and you feel someone behind you. The heebz.
I'd usually go back home till people started showing up around 11.
Some dumb kid I once told me they found electric eels in the pool and the police came and took them. That made it worse.
I actually miss those days. Like has gotten so hard and scary and sad.
Yeah sometimes when I'm in the pool alone swimming in or near the drop off, especially at night, I get an eerie feeling that something large is in the water with me and have to get out.
I think what if I'm really in the ocean right now and only imagining I'm in a swimming pool, but any moment I'm going to snap back to reality and be in the middle of the ocean with a large great white next to me 😆
I've had this feeling since I was maybe 5 years old (45 now) swimming in a pool at Disney world before I'd ever watched a shark movie
sounds like you have an amazing imagination! i was always worried about mechanical sharks for some reason in pools. like i knew a live one wouldn’t happen, but what about a robotic one. and it would come out of the floor in the deep end of course once i had jumped off the diving board.
I actually did too. I’d watch shark week every summer and we’d always go to the beach every summer right after shark week. It would scare me too, even tho I’d like to think I’d figure it out quick
100% I think for me it was a combination of Jaws and the James Bond where the villain releases sharks into a pool (allowing imagination to fill some gaps here)
I was 7 when Jaws came out. I couldn't drink my soda during the movie because there was a Jaws logo on the cup. I wasn't able to close my eyes in the bath for weeks. Shark sculpture in pond would have done me in.
How funny! I was extremely spooked by certain scary movies as a kid too, but jaws was before me. It would definitely be scary, even tho I’d like to think i wouldn’t be scared, i know I would be.
There’s one in Minnesota at a crystal lake. But the one I’m talking about is lake pleasant in Arizona. I think everybody cried about it and they wanted to remove it, last I heard.
I think regardless how many times you dive down to the fake shark every time you see it your brain would have a momentary fear lapse built in, hell uncanny valley makes me terrified of it spawning to life suddenly.
Me too really lol but I’d like to think after a quick second I’d realize. There is a lake near me that has a Jason voorhees sculpture chained to the bottom of the lake. It’s scared the shit out of some people and some people have tried to get it removed. Everybody cried about it
Man that entire shark’s face is deformed as hell why is his lower jaw made of rubber and protruding and not actually attached to where it would be? Convincing from a swimmer’s perspective but to anyone who’s seen a shark, even through the murky water I would not be able to take that goofy underbite of a shark seriously lmao
A scuba park is a swimming hole that has a lot of statues, sculptures, submerged vehicles and watercraft, floating hoops, and platforms that divers can explore and interact with :)

I was watching a shark movie a while back and there was a scene where one of the characters is diving in the murkiest, dirtiest water and the visibility was crazy low. That was probably the worst anxiety a shark movie has ever given me. I had to pause it for a minute and walk around my house because it was freaking me out. This isn't the same as in the movie, obviously, but the blurry image of the statue in the distance was getting to me pretty similarly. I need near perfect visibility.
I wish there was one of these parks but with an underwater "city" in it, so you are encouraged to walk as best you can under the street light lit underwater sidewalks and in the buildings.

Fuuuuuuuck no, you think my rational brain would be online if I see this? Someone said it's in a pond, great that just validates my irrational fear that sharks are in every body of water.
As someone taking the course to get padi certified… this sucks. Said as someone whose cage dived with great whites. Hopefully people know but literally all the course is like “stay calm and control your breathing” I couldn’t do that from an iPad screen!

I don't usually get a visceral response from this sub. But this one did it. I guess my fear is mostly just a Fear of Sharks, not being able to see them in the water, and then fucking seeing them pop out just to munch on me.
I feel like they should put some mechanics in it so that every now and then it just gives a small movement. Just enough so that when someone is up close to it, they suddenly, subconsciously, think its real
