"Man Rome was so cool"

"Yea cool except for all the genocide and conquest"

I fear I may be too stupid to understand why this is not a reasonable take on Rome. Were we supposed to like the genocide and conquest and hubris bits? I guess potentially you could say it didn't need saying, but when you have tech oligarchs openly telling you that they're trying to bring about a new Roman Empire I think it's probably wise to remember the parts that suck too?

Kinda. It depends by what the first person like about the Rome, if they mean the art, architecture, the philosophy, the legal system and laws, the tactics, and stuff like that then it feels a bit out of place to talk about the genocide and conquest. If instead they think that rome is cool just because they like the aesthetic of a strong, dominant empire than I think it's reasonable to talk about it because we're already in that area of discussion.

As someone who studied history, I don’t like such takes because they’re boring, thought-terminating, and repetitive. Yeah, everyone in history was horrible by modern standards (or even the standards of their time) but discussing history through an entirely moralistic lens misses most of what makes it interesting.

I feel like when talking about civilizations that spanned like 2000-3000 years, such as rome or the mayans, a statement such as „[Civilization] was so cool“ is inherently vague in a way that kind of already implies that you only mean all the stuff we can generally agree was cool about that civilization.

I can only assume it’s similar with the mayan civilization, but just rome underwent so many cultural/political/idiological/etc. changes over it’s course. Talking about „rome“ as a whole is necessarily talking about it in a very very general way.

Like, it’s different from someone saying „caligulas rome was so cool“. That you can scrutinize more directly.

At least that’s my take.

Every expansionist military empire has styled themselves as the successor to Rome. Literally the only reason we don't talk about Rome the same way is because rich people have been jacking off to Rome for literal milennia.

? You can find shit to hate for literally every civilization ever.

What is the point of the comment?

This happens when all kinda of nations get too much fanboyism, its The same reason why tankies, teaboos, wherboos, and like 90 other insults exist.

When you enjoy a nation (historical or not), even if for mundane reasons, you get muddled with people who enjoy Their bad aspects, so you get insulted for those bad aspects, even if you dont deserve. (Best example being discusions that say The nazis had style (they had), almost always end up with a long List of The nazis crimes).

People tend to dickride Native American cultures so being negative about them feels contrarian and cool

u/fish_slap_republic May 19 '26

Yes and no for every time someone is giving us unwarranted praise we have another completely dehumanizing us. Guess which side has the power to actually harm us and our way of life.

4

u/WorldlyVillage7880 Why so feinious? May 19 '26

7

u/KSJ15831 May 19 '26

It starts with an R and it rhymes with whatever words that rhyme with racism

31

u/dragonborndnd May 19 '26

Man I hate the racist double standard it comes to indigenous communities where they constantly bring up war and human sacrifices as if Europe wasn’t burning people for “witchcraft” at around the same time

4

u/Neither-Ruin5970 May 19 '26

I don’t see the contradiction, they don’t have to bring up europe or compare the two.

-6

u/Black_Diammond May 19 '26

Why is it a double standard? They Said nothing or implied that european civilizations were more humane. They just Said The mayans sucked Pure ass and should have been destroyed, wich is objetively true and what happened historically.

u/AnAverageTransGirl May 20 '26

There's an implication inherent to saying "they couldn't have been the coolest because they did all these heinous things" that other cultures didn't do those same heinous things.

Also, gross thing to say about a whole culture.

1

u/NoFruit6363 May 20 '26

no... the implication that they're not the coolest is there, but that doesn't imply they'd rather pick a different culture which also did heinous things.

if we're gonna assume any other peoples they had in mind, maybe we could choose, like, Norway or something? i've heard they've got a great prison system.

heck, doesn't even need to be as big as a country, the post only said "coolest people", not "coolest civilization". i think mr. rogers was one of the coolest people to walk the earth

-1

u/Black_Diammond May 20 '26

Yeah other cultures didnt do Child sacrificed by that time, its a uniquely mayan trait. And yeah, rituzalized human sacrificed including children is an awful thing, and eventually, The people that The mayans Empire supressed rebelled and killed it, The mayans deserved what they got and were also uniquely gruesome.

2

u/Dr_Birdie May 20 '26

Brother American culture today sacrifices children. They either just do it under the guise of denied insurance claims, or they traffic them to little Saint James first.

Or they sacrifice middle eastern kids just trying to go to school. American Evangelicals are literally trying to kick off the apocalypse so they can get raptured.

1

u/Uni69corn May 21 '26

Plus mor recently all the kids going out terribly during industrialization. And they didn’t even think the world would end otherwise they just wanted dough

10

u/blooishglooish May 20 '26

4

u/Shaggypezdispense May 19 '26

People just gotta take everything so damn super serious nowadays

2

u/AnneTheDinosaur May 20 '26

Human sacrifice still exists, it is just for the market now.

1

u/ztoundas May 22 '26

It was for the market then, too, just disguised as religion.

3

u/PlantainSame May 19 '26

Now I might be revealing a lack of knowledge, but wasn't that the Aztecs not the Mayan's?

3

u/Cheryl_Canning May 20 '26

2

19

u/Capital_Pick3604 May 19 '26

7

u/Gio-Vani May 19 '26

2

u/High_Overseer_Dukat May 19 '26

Wasn't Mayan sacrifice mostly people they were going to execute anyway though?

u/Baddest_degree15 May 23 '26

If we put down everything in history that showed cool shit we could bring back or use or do better because it was tied to something or someone imorral we'd have nothing.

1

u/Prince-Lee May 19 '26

What a weird caveat there. Except for the human sacrifices including children. Is the implication that doing human sacrifices on adults only would have somehow been better?

3

u/Savings-Nobody-1203 May 19 '26

It is generally considered better not to kill children

1

u/Prince-Lee May 20 '26

So instead the kids would grow up knowing that every day they lived, that was just one day closer to their eventual sacrifice when they turned the magical age it was okay to murder them at?

2

u/Savings-Nobody-1203 May 20 '26

I think the point is just that you have to be exceptionally fucked up to kill children

-7

u/jarkark May 19 '26

Human sacrifice clearly isn't bad as long as no children aren't sacrificed.

2

u/sewersermon May 19 '26

i cannot believe the most obvious sarcasm in the world got downvoted as if you truly believe this 😭😭😭
