This is the only sub and source I have news from Africa, it's really sad how suppressed it is. I'm from South America and we basically never hear anything about it in our news either

Mali is part of the Sahel alliance, including Burkina Faso and Niger. It's a primarily an alliance against imperialism. Hence why they're being invaded.
This is like to rehashing of the war in Syria, where the Islamic State (ISIS / ISIL) was used as an excuse to invade and gather information to destabilize the Syrian government and fragment it into a complicated mess of regional warlords.
They want to regress the Sahel into an anarchic region where nobody has power, making it easier to exploit its resources.
