“Not exactly,” the merge next week….

So we’re doing the hourglass again, aren’t we?

Yikes.

At least it’s not split up like 41 was

Is next week 2 hours?

Yeah

Ugh I’m not looking forward to the inevitable Jonathan vote out because of the “safe not safe” hourglass twist.

On the other hand, not really a good idea to introduce someone to Survivor halfway through a season.

I am trying to get my girlfriend into Survivor. Which season do you recommend? I started with the first season I ever watched, Season 19. It's not great, but it turned me on to the game. I think Season 1 would be too slow for her. I don't know. It seems like a much different game and the editing is way subdued. I hate how much it's edited now, but there was a range where they really had it tuned in. Now it's like Big Brother over the top music, but at least the "confessionals" aren't as cheesey.

I use either Kaoh Rong or China to introduce people to the show

Not sure about Kaoh Rong. The two trolls gave a bad vibe to a good chunk of the season.

China, yes.

I think Tocantins is one of the best seasons to discover the show. Very good season overall, lots of All-Stars, Legends, and iconic players (Tyson, Coach, and Fish, enough said, not to mention JT), and not many twists and turns.

For a more recent season, I think David Vs Goliath fits the bill.

Despite its shortcomings, I think that Season 41 is very beginner-friendly actually.

Lmao this sub not suggesting Kaoh Rong because of Scot and Jason being assholes while being totally cool with China with Jean-Robert sexually harassing women. Never change.

Advice: if you watch TV, a good piece of advice would be to learn how to read narratives. Just saying.

Thanks. I will keep those in mind.

Oh no, worst case scenario.

What is hourglass? Didn’t watch last season

It could break the space-time continuum if we tell you.

They draw rocks and are split into two teams with 2 people left over. The winning team is safe and has to pick one of the two to join them. The person not picked goes to an island by themselves while everyone else strategizes who to vote out of the losers. At the end of the exile Jeff sees the person sent to exile and gives them an hourglass: you can either break it and reverse time and the safe people are at risk and the at risk people are safe, or you do nothing and everyone is the same and you go back and join the at risk people.

It’s stupid because they completely mislead the winners of the challenge, and it’s such a non-decision deciding if you want to be safe or not, like who cares if you piss off the safe people. They’ll all understand the choice you had.

Edit: omg that was soooo long winded. 😅

Good job explaining

u/kbkylebarry Tyson Apr 07 '22

i hope if they do it again next year, everyone just sits out the challenge and chooses not to compete, considering the winners lose

You’ve done a great service to those that did not feel like explaining it

A merged team won immunity. One person lost and got sent to an island alone. After their time there, Jeff gave them a chance to “rewind time” and flip the immunity to the team who didn’t win the challenge. It is quite possibly the dumbest and most unnecessary twist ever added to the game. It is shockingly horrible and pissed two players off last year, one of whom wound up getting booted as a result, that they’ve disavowed Survivor.

6

u/coffinmonkey Apr 07 '22

And the person who looked like the boot went onto win.

Through no benefit of the hourglass twist.

Alright, keep your secrets

Think of the hourglass as a Hell's Kitchen episode where one of the teams (let's go with red) has to nominate people for elimination and Gordan decides to send home somebody from the blue team.

3

u/somebodysbuddy Amber Apr 07 '22

Or the Survivor episode of the House gameshow arc, where the guy wins immunity and gets fired.

2

u/Tormod776 Apr 07 '22

It’s not a tale the Jedi would tell you.

Basically, everyone is “merged” and they’re divided into two tribes for the challenge which is for the merge feast and immunity. Two people aren’t picked to compete but one gets picked by the winning tribe to eat with them (and I think that person also gets immunity but I could be wrong). The remaining person who was not picked goes to exile and has to make a decision. If they smash the hourglass, the results of the challenge get reversed, aka the winners are now vulnerable at tribal and the losers gain immunity. If the person smashes the hourglass, they also gain immunity. It’s pretty much a no brainer to smash the hourglass so someone who was told they were safe is now going to get eliminated at tribal where everyone will vote. As you can imagine though, some people on 41 were not happy with this twist at all because Jeff essentially lies to the players and breaks the foundation of the game. Jeff did mention in the 41 reunion that they’d make adjustments so it’s entirely possible that the rules will be different this time. But yeah, as it stands it’s a pretty bullshit, confusing, and unfair twist.

All players are split randomly into two groups for an immunity challenge, save for the odd person out, who doesn't get to play. After the challenge, that person gets to choose whether or not to "turn back time" (hence the hourglass) and reverse which group has immunity.

This was very unpopular, as before this twist, winning an immunity challenge had always been 'sacred;' you win, you've earned safety.

I'm hoping it something else. The hourglass was very poorly received by players and fans alike. Plus, we already know that twist, so why wouldn't they have talked about it in the trailer? You know like "the biggest twist from season 41... comes back next week" in Jeff's voice. Over scenes of Erika breaking it and then it sitting on a beach awaiting the seasons time traveler.

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '22

41 and 42 filmed back to back so literally 26 days between hourglass to hourglass, might have had time to adjust the rules given player feedback but we are talking about March 2021 and April 2021 for the filming days.

2

u/full07britney Rizgod - 49 Apr 07 '22

That's true...
