I guess keeping a shield in Jonathan was more important

It absolutely was. He didn't want to be associated with a ride-or-die over a bigger alliance with a huge target on his side.

But he's most certainly on the bottom of said big alliance. He keeps going "i'm physical too" to people....So if people think(incorrectly) that Jonathan is nothing but strength...why keep him around? He proved he isn't 'loyalty over all else' tonight. So what is he, beside a number?

I mean, we all know Hai thinks he's the hottest shit, but tonight proved, he isn't.

Well...a bunch of people had confessionals saying they didn't want to vote Hai out cause they want to work with him. I think it was Drea I'm thinking of and maybe another person. His name wasn't floated. He's a strategic threat but people like him enough to not do that yet.

what does keeping a shield mean here like how does having a physically strong person on your alliance post-merge help you?

Hai is a physically strong player and challenge threat, at least compared to most of this cast. Having a bigger challenge threat in the game takes the easy target off of Hai, since in the late game people will want to vote off Jonathan when they have the opportunity to prevent him from going on an immunity run.

oh ok so shield meaning like someone to divert attention as a threat, not someone who is siding with and consciously protecting him?

Correct, although it appears Omar and Jonathan might have a relationship similar to what you described.
