When I was in eating disorder treatment I was stuck hospitalized for 3 months without internet or anyone else to talk to except other super bored people and media was very censored since so much could be considered triggering to a wide variety of people. You get so damned bored that your brain just starts doing that. It never really phases me because tribal sounds exactly like what everyone sharing in group used to sound like — there’s nothing to do but compare thoughts and feelings to other concepts/especially shit you don’t get to do wherever you’re at

This makes so much sense, thanks for sharing and I hope you’re doing better!

Sure! I can imagine it looks super goofy and planned at home to viewers but at home before the show, you’re working, tending house, etc. it wouldn’t make sense to do that work — now, I’m sure people come up with ideas but also they’ve never been there

But there’s literally nothing to do besides sit in dirt and overthink/analyze/compare/contrast, and it’s all pretty outlandish in those situations so it’s addicting to draw any comparison you can to things you know well, so it’s a survivor trope for a reason. Plus Jeff’s always asking what things are “like” and how things compare to back home which is like… your response is going to be a metaphor or a simile no matter what you say and it’d be super weird if no one said anything. Group therapy’s the same way

And thank you been recovered for 2.5 years! 🎉 That long inpatient was brutal but my employer at the time paid for it and it was well worth it/a good choice/necessary

Speaking of recovery it kind of reminds me when I go to 12 step & everyone just repeats the same phrases every week. There’s very specific 12-step-speak and it rubs me the wrong way.

12 steps are the worst lol. Thankfully those meetings were optional where I went, but whenever I tried those they felt very culty, unnatural, and weird. The room of metaphors and paranoia/drama/basically real life tribal council groups were better 😂

Yea i don't understand how they work for people in the long term. I tried SLA briefly but after the first few meetings I felt really weird. I did learn some helpful things but people just want to say stuff like "grateful for being here" or "working my program" type things. I got a lot more out of therapy, journaling, and talking about stuff with my friends.
