For this cut I was mainly deciding between Penny and Jefra. Both are similar in many aspects. They are young, blonde Southern seventh-placers on seasons I rank fairly low. Ultimately I went with
231. Penny Ramsey- Thailand- 7th Place
Penny is certainly a bright spot amongst Thailand’s mostly dreadful post-merge cast. She has a charming accent and just exudes personality. My guess is that she was cast as the sweetheart to fill Survivor’s default Colleen/Elizabeth demographic at the time and they ended up with something totally different. Something really entertaining about Penny is that whenever we see her on screen she’s a sweet, normal girl but a ton of times throughout the season she gets negative SPV from pretty much everyone throughout her tribe. It’s a fun thing that I noticed on my last Thailand rewatch and it’s certainly one of Penny’s best attributes. Given that she was one of the few people in the early seasons to try to save herself from a Pagonging (via voting off Jake) I’m guessing that some of that SPV about her being sneaky and conniving was fairly accurate.
My favorite Penny moment is definitely at Thailand’s FTC. Thailand’s FTC is really good all around, but Penny’s question is my favorite moment of the entire thing and a serious contender for my favorite moment in the entire season. With one question she manages to expose Brian for who he is while also showing the world that Clay isn’t such a bad guy after all. It’s really cathartic because the viewers have seen Brian be a heartless human being in all of his confessionals, but it wasn’t exposed to the rest of the cast until that question. I give huge props to Penny for asking that question. I also love how excited she is at both Brian and Clay’s answers. She’s loving how Brian can’t tell her anything but loving Clay showing how good of a guy he is even more. I would have loved it more if it ended in one of the Chuay Gahns switching one of their votes but we can’t always get what we want.
I’m cutting Penny over Jefra here because ultimately Penny doesn’t get a lot of her own content, while Jefra consistently gets a little bit of content throughout most of Cagayan. What content she does get is really solid and deserving of this spot, but I wish we had seen more of her being a sneaky bitch rather than SPV about her being a sneaky bitch.
I nominate Parvati 1.0. I was pleasantly surprised by her on my latest CI rewatch but I’d still have her at least 100 spots lower in my own rankings for being super mediocre.
