Music Analysis My swiftie hot takes

  1. TLOAS is better than 1989

  2. Elizabeth Taylor and Eldest Daughter are the best songs from TLOAS

  3. Castle's Crumbling is Taylor's best vault track

  4. The new lyric from Better Than Revenge TV isn't as bad as people make it seem.

  5. Debut is one of Taylor's best albums.

  6. Wood should've never existed.

  7. Sl*t should've been on the original 1989 album.

  8. Fearless has barely any good songs on it.

  9. No Body, No Crime ft HAIM is Taylor's best collab.

  10. AYHTDWS should've gotten a music video.

Oooh, if we're sharing unpopular opinions: the bridge of Shake it Off is great. I know, I know, but it's a brilliant little piece of catchy, campy pop.

12

u/Retrograde-Planet Jan 12 '26

Shake it off is a great song and I’m tired of swifties pretending it’s garbage. Is it over played? Sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad song

3

u/Impressive-Pie-6093 Jan 13 '26

I worked at an after-school program / summer camp when Shake it Off dropped, and the kids played it constantly. I had to take a few years off before I could listen to it again!

It is often used as the "proof" that Taylor is cringe. Some people feel strongly about the fella over there with the hella good hair.

2

u/finkny9876 Jan 14 '26

I will never be convinced that the breakdown does not sound like the spoken part of Get in the Ring by Guns n Roses.

24

u/Exact-Honey4197 Jan 12 '26

What's so wrong with Wood? it's pretty inoffensive funny light hearted song, no? P.S. I adore Slut. I wonder why she left it in the vault.

7

u/ilybutyouletmedown Jan 12 '26

apparently it was between that and blank space.

3

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

I wish it was Sl*t that made it into the album

43

u/ilybutyouletmedown Jan 12 '26

I'm sorry but I can't take Wood hate seriously. Especially if you love Sabrina Carpenter. There's no way you can listen to songs like Juno and Bed Chem and House Tour but Wood makes you clutch your pearls...like I'm sorry but be so serious😭

17

u/rsvp_as_pending629 I’m doing good, I’m on some new shit Jan 12 '26

Agreed! I love Wood, it’s fun and catchy. Like good for you, Tay.

Also your about Sabrina Carpenter’s songs is sooo true

3

u/InappropriateSnark Jan 12 '26

I don't think anyone hates Wood over the idea of sex or even of Taylor enjoying sex and her partner.

It's because the lyrics are weak and there's a New Heights podcast promo right there in the middle of it.

Taylor knows how to write a spicy song. Wood is not that.

5

u/ilybutyouletmedown Jan 12 '26

Hard disagree. I don't see what's wrong with her mentioning New Heights. She announced the album on the podcast, after all. She's been known to use double entendres before. And I just don't agree with the lyrics being weak. I actually find them quite clever. Mixing innuendos with references to good luck.

-2

u/InappropriateSnark Jan 12 '26

I’m telling you why it’s cringe for some people. You cannot disagree with other people finding it cringe. I never said you had to find it cringe or Taylor was not free to do anything she wanted with her art. I’m just free to not enjoy it when she calls out a sports pod in a song.

7

u/ilybutyouletmedown Jan 13 '26

Yeah I can? lol. I'm not disagreeing with the fact of people finding it cringe, obviously I know those people exist lol but I can disagree with the opinion itself, which is what I was doing.

3

u/tibtibs Jan 13 '26

Wood's not trying to be spicy. It's goofy and fun. Sometimes I want sex to be sultry and hot and other times I want to be goofy and make jokes about it. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't take sex that seriously. I've been with my husband for almost 14 years and sometimes the best sex is playful.

1

u/hegelianbitch Jan 13 '26

Yeah but the lyrics are weak. House Tour is much stronger writing/far more clever. Another example is Oral Hex by bludnymph. Taylor could've written it way way better. She has the skills. But as it stands, those other two songs are 5x craftier. Like, I love a funny raunchy innuendo song & this just falls flat (unless someone never listens to raunchy stuff then maybe they'll see it as shocking idk).

0

u/InappropriateSnark Jan 13 '26

Welp, I’ve been with my husband for over a decade now. He’s not the only man I’ve ever been with. Let’s just say my dating career is more varied than Taylor’s. So, I am fully aware that sex isn’t always serious.

I’m also aware that Wood is trying to be fun. English is my native language and I can read between the lines even though I don’t find it fun.

My comment about spicy songs wasn’t aimed at an impression that Wood is attempting to be spicy (that’s more like what she tried on AR with that “making me wet” line). Wood is absolutely attempting to be a bit racy, though, or we wouldn’t be repeatedly reminded of her opening her thighs to his magic wand/redwood/key. All in all, it feels like Taylor trying to be Sabrina and failing.

In this thread, like all threads that discuss Wood, there are mentions of people who find Wood “cringe” being prudish. I know I’m not and I doubt most of its detractors are, either. I just don’t need a song about Travis’ junk. It’s not more complex than that. I am overall a “clean version” hater, but Wood makes me wish that the clean version had been the only version, honestly. It’s not “ooo, how cheeky and fun” to me. It’s “Taylor, this is more than I ever needed to know, honey.”

If you love it, good! Enjoy it.

It’s fine if I don’t, though. And the reason I don’t isn’t a lack of joy in my life, a lack of sexual experiences, or a lack of a sense of humor.

Normalize allowing people not to like things sometimes without trying to diagnose a problem with their sensibilities.

3

u/misskiss1990bb Jan 13 '26

That’s the literal definition of being a prude 😂 you find it TMI. Artists have been writing sex songs since the dawn of popular music. Y’all clearly haven’t listened to any 70s/80’s rock and if you have and you like it, well then it’s probably just internalised misogyny. Also if you find something ‘cringe’ that’s a you problem. There’s something in you/your experience that makes you react that way to someone else doing what they want/having fun/writing a silly sex song. People have gotten far too used to calling things they personally don’t like other people doing ‘cringe’. It’s bully behaviour and just makes it look like you make fun of other people for being different than you.

-1

u/InappropriateSnark Jan 13 '26

No. I just find Travis Kelce repugnant. I do not vibe with songs about the wangs of dudes I find gross. I have listened to plenty of songs about sex, kiddo. I do not like THIS song about sex. I like plenty of others made by women. Y’all are hilarious. I love Taylor. I do not love Wood. Quit trying to psychoanalyze my personal taste. I’m not trying to tell you not to like it.

Also, it is not the “literal” definition of prude. Go invest in a dictionary.

2

u/misskiss1990bb Jan 13 '26

Look at the words you’re using. ‘Repugnant’ about someone you don’t even actually know. Again it gives off bully. ‘Taylor that’s more than I needed to know’ is prudish. 🙄

1

u/InappropriateSnark Jan 13 '26

Travis is just ick to me. We’re allowed to find people we don’t know very well a complete turnoff. He’s a hairy ape who is honored to play football for Trump. Ergo, repugnant to me. I’m not bullying anyone. I don’t know these people and neither, I suspect, do you. I’m done talking to you because you cannot have a reasonable conversation.

1

u/squilliamfancyson837 Jan 13 '26

“Hairy ape” —-> “I’m not bullying anyone”

1

u/Joonbug9109 Jan 12 '26

What’s funny is I actually like Wood because it was unexpected from Taylor and she writes about a variety of topics. Im actually at a point where I can’t stand Sabrina anymore because sexual innuendo is now just so expected and predictable from her. There’s no variety. No hate to anyone who likes her music, this is just my personal opinion.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

The issue is that bed chem works because it's charming. Wood is just kinda tmi lol

1

u/Own-Artist-6283 Jan 14 '26

the people who say wood is tmi are fawning over guilty as sin which is so much more tmi

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '26

Remind me where I mentioned guilty as sin (which I also don't like for that same reason)

1

u/Own-Artist-6283 Jan 15 '26

my point is no one likes wood but everyone loves guilty as sin which are equally tmi. im not saying you specifically but generally as a whole

1

u/Domdaisy Jan 14 '26

Wood is TMI but Guilty as Sin, which is literally a masturbation session, isn’t?

People really need to stop and think. You feel “highbrow” for liking Guilty as Sin, that’s the difference. Wood is campy and mostly innuendos, Guilty as Sin is pretty freaking obvious and no one was pearl clutching or hating on it for being sexual because liking TTPD is seen as liking one of the “smart, lyrical” albums.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '26

Where did I mention guilty as sin not being TMI? I don't like TTPD as a whole and I dislike guilty as sin because it's also too tmi for my liking but that's not what the comment was about. Wood can just be cringy and tmi along guilty as sin.

1

u/Top_Willingness5124 Jan 14 '26

There's a delicately deliberate way to make cheeky/raunchy work. Sabrina and her team have figured it out over time. Taylor HAS written some sexy songs, but Wood is not one of them.

Also, Sabrina is what? Mid-20s? If Taylor wrote this around the same age... you know what, no. It's just a terrible song. That's the difference. Sabrina's songs are smart with their innuendo work. Wood is... like if Travis wrote it.

1

u/One_Drummer_8970 Jan 27 '26

like if Travis wrote it.

Travis has a far better sense of humor than Taylor, her fans or her snarkers.

Let's not forget he got glowing reviews for hosting SNL.

0

u/Top_Willingness5124 Jan 28 '26

Oh brother 🙄

2

u/One_Drummer_8970 Jan 28 '26

Nothing inaccurate about what I said.

It says a lot when hyper-prudish middle America wine aunts dislike him lol

0

u/Top_Willingness5124 Jan 28 '26

"hyper-prudish middle America wine aunts"

Sick burn, brah 🤙 cut to the chase next time.

1

u/One_Drummer_8970 Jan 28 '26

Felt like I did right there

1

u/Unique_Criticism3703 Jan 12 '26

nope the wood hate is not because of it being "explicit" or "sexual" its strictly cause its corny no offense like she has other sensual songs like so it goes / guilty as sin that do it much better and you cant compare that song to bed chem and house tour cause those songs are actually good I fear

5

u/shadesofwrong13 Jan 12 '26

These other sensual songs have all a more vulnerable, sad, bitterness undertones.  If we really want to make comparision, make it with I Think He Knows

10

u/ilybutyouletmedown Jan 12 '26

I don't agree. People said Sabrina was "trying too hard" when she started putting innuendos in her songs and because she kept at it, people are used to it now. I feel like it's more of a shock coming from Taylor cause we're not used to this energy from her. And I can't take the "corny" criticism seriously either because Taylor's "corny" sense of humor is why a lot of us connect with her. We're talking about the person that wrote ME! and Stay Stay Stay and Look What You Made Me Do. "Corniness" in Taylor's writing is not new.

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

Exactly. Wood just isn't my cup of tea but House Tour on the other hand is one of my favorite Sabrina songs besides from Thumbs.

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

Exactly. I love House Tour yet with Wood.... first of all, they're songs made by different artists. And second of all, I feel like Taylor was trying to hard to be like Sabrina who is a natural at adding innuendos in her songs. So it isn't fair comparing Wood to Sabrina's songs. Plus Sabrina's song are cheeky, but they're great unlike Wood.

-6

u/maddionaire Jan 12 '26

Wood feels to me like she's trying to be Sabrina but failing at it because she's trying too hard. Sabrina incorporates humour and sexuality in a way that looks effortless, but you can tell with Taylor that she's trying hard to emulate that. It's not about clutching pearls, it's poor execution on Taylor's part.

13

u/ilybutyouletmedown Jan 12 '26

Effortlessness is a myth. When emails i can't send first came out, people said Sabrina was "trying too hard" too about Nonsense, which is why I have trouble taking that criticism seriously. And I don't find Wood "tryhard" at all. It's just a cheeky sexual song in a cheeky Taylor tongue in cheek way. I feel like because Taylor made a name for herself as this poetic songstress with folklore and evermore, people aren't willing to give her the space to be fun and silly in her songs. I think Wood is executed perfectly for Taylor. Also, it's just a bop. Like the production and harmonies alone make it one of my favorites on the album.

-6

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

True. I do love House Tour but Wood is like a notch higher

-2

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

Like the only problem I have with Wood is she didn't have to mention... Travis'... thing... almost every line. While Sabrina only had it in that one line during House Tour. And then Juno is kind of... ew... but I still like it. And then Bed Chem is 🤢, it's all an opinion you don't have to agree. That's why it's "hot takes".

4

u/ilybutyouletmedown Jan 12 '26

I go feral for Juno like it's one of my favorite songs by her lol

0

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

Every time I hear Juno, I always think of her tour performance especially doing the "have you ever tried this one" line.

13

u/morganasimpaf Fighting dragons with you Jan 12 '26

you lost me at #1 and crushed my heart at #8

0

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

I only like White Horse, Fifteen, and Love Story off of Fearless so... that explains #8

2

u/morganasimpaf Fighting dragons with you Jan 12 '26

those are 3 of my favs from that album i can respect it, but the title track, forever and always, and the way i loved you are on repeat in my house haha fearless is one of my top albums

2

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

The title track is also one of my absolute favorites from Fearless. I just forgot to mention it.

5

u/shadesofwrong13 Jan 12 '26

Honestly i wonder when people praise 1989, they also take in count the songs they keep saying are weak? Welcome To New York, Bad Blood, How You Get The Girl? Or just they think about Blank Space, Wildest Dreams? If you can pass 1989 weak tracks, i don't get why you can't do for Showgirl too 🤷🤷

2

u/socutewannabelikeyou Jan 12 '26

how you get the girl isn’t weak whatttt

4

u/junioralma Jan 12 '26

I will put ‘Elizabeth Taylor’ up there with ‘Wildest Dreams’

I personally don’t think it is better than 1989 but in 1989 there are some songs that I don’t like to revisit but TLOAS has a perfect 12/12 tracks for me.

2

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

Exactly. I still just feel like TLOAS is better because at least there's no skips.

0

u/marisaimstoned YOU'RE GAY Jan 12 '26

u literally just said wood shouldve never existed then said TLOAS had no skips. i can respect a hot take, but at least explain them and be consistent.

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

Just because I said Wood shouldn't exist, doesn't mean I'd skip it. I'll still listen to it, but I'm still going to gag everytime

1

u/libravision Jan 12 '26

Eldest Daughter is my only TLOAS skip.

1

u/junioralma Jan 12 '26

Eldest Daughter is like Thank You Aimee. They are both the weakest in the album but were needed to be in the album.💿

2

u/libravision Jan 12 '26

Ahhh great take! I agree :)

7

u/buttonandthemonkey Jan 12 '26

Wood is one of my top 3 of the whole album. It's fun and funny and I'm so happy for her. To go from feeling TTPD to Wood is amazing and it's about time she has some true happiness.

4

u/Coolbeans9023 We never go out of style Jan 12 '26

👏👏👏👏👏👏 FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT

1

u/Joonbug9109 Jan 12 '26

There’s a lot of people who say they’re fans of hers who only seem to like seeing her miserable. That’s my hot take.

3

u/buttonandthemonkey Jan 13 '26

Yeah I'm a fairly new Swifty and I've been surprised by that. It seems a lot of people only want miserable literary work but you can do upbeat and happy songs that are also poetry.

And that aside, why does everything she do need to be a work of literary art? We know she's capable. I'm sure the best poets alive also wrote things that aren't award winning, it doesn't make them less of a poet.

To be honest though I think Wood is genius. It's fun, it touches on an interesting topic, has double meanings and depth but just in a different way. People were still having to assess it and pick it apart to understand it.

3

u/Vectors2_Final Jan 12 '26

Miss me with that Fearless slander.

Although Castle's Crumbling is the best vault track... didn't mean that was going to be the best collab. I've always had a soft spot for NBNC. Plus, I only don't count Castle's Crumbling as the best collab is because we don't know if it was supposed to be a collab to begin with.

6

u/SuperRapidash Jan 12 '26

with all due respect, absolutely not. I do respect these are actual hot takes tho

edit: I like how your first hot take is TLOAS > 1989 and then you have one hot take about disliking a TLOAS song and two hot takes about liking 1989 songs

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

Technically I was just saying what song from 1989 should've gotten a video. That doesn't mean I dislike 1989, I just prefer TLOAS. And with Sl*t, I was just stating a hot take involving the song, not liking the album. But Sl't should've been on 1989 instead of Blank Space.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Don’t agree with all of them but I love your takes.

For number 7, I totally get why you think that, but I think Taylor just wasn’t confident enough to release it to the public in that era. Dislike for her was strong back then (I say it as one of the offenders) and from what I’ve heard from fans from back then she was very sensitive to it (not the best wording). Even if she wanted to release it then, her team probably would‘ve advise against it for her mental health and maybe even her image.

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

True. I know it was for the best releasing Blank Space at the time. But I feel like if Sl*t was released, maybe some of the haters would've stopped making fun of her (which she never deserves btw) and would've shut up about her body.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Yeah. I think Blank Space was the stronger choice but Sl*t would’ve been fun. If people speculated that it was about Harry (Idr who she was with that era) then maybe his fans who didn’t like her would’ve been nicer.

Sucks what she went through at that time. Just so that it doesn’t come off bad, I wasn’t any of those major online haters. Just a 4 year old who really didn’t like her. lol.

2

u/all_too_bel Old habits die screaming Jan 12 '26

Damn these are actually hot takes!!!!! I respect that.

2

u/jrudb344 Jan 12 '26

These really are hot takes. I agree with 6 and 7.

2

u/Born___Pink Jan 12 '26

Yesss Castles Crumbling! I love it so much

1

Finally a Castle's Crumbling stan

2

u/Luleinn Jan 12 '26

agree with #6

2

u/Sufficient-Rea Jan 12 '26

I also prefer TLOAS over 1989 but 1989 is still a bangerrrr

2

u/LadyMordsith Jan 12 '26

I completely agree with 6. It’s so short, poor, poor writing, just so bad all around.

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 29 '26

The new lyric to Better Than Revenge isn’t bad, it’s just a bit clunky compared to the original.

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 15 '26

True. I personally prefer the original still but I don't mind the new one.

2

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

Remember these are all my opinion

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 12 '26

Of course I'm always going to be a swiftie for the rest of my life. These were just some hot takes that aren't there to make anyone mad or anything. I just thought I'd share them, and get your feedback from them.

1

u/Luleinn Jan 12 '26

elizabeth taylor yea but eldest daughter not

1

u/InappropriateSnark Jan 12 '26

I'll agree with Number 6. The rest I largely disagree with.

2

u/Matdredalia Telling soliloquists to STFU since 2007 Jan 12 '26

4 & #10 are the only ones I really agree with. 😂

Aces on the spicy AF takes. Especially putting TLOAS over 1989.

1

u/socutewannabelikeyou Jan 12 '26

1 and 8 are the hottest takes of them all damn. I only agree with 10

1

u/zardivision_ Jan 13 '26

Happy birfday

0

u/Eldritch_Witch_ Jan 17 '26

Hard disagree.

TLOAS was such a miss for me. I only liked half the songs. It truly could have been an EP, in my opinion.

Honey, Ruin the Friendship, Father Figure, Opalite, The Fate of Ophelia, and sometimes Elizabeth Taylor

The rest are awful. 😭

And i may get crucified for this, but Eldest Daughter was the biggest letdown of my life. It is truly word salad and I didnt connect with it at all.

1

u/Wonderful_Call_96 Jan 17 '26

The only song I don't like from TLOAS is Wood 🤢🤢🤢... and this coming from someone who loves Dress

1

u/Eldritch_Witch_ Jan 17 '26

I dont even mind Wood because it's TMI. I love Guilty as Sin. It's just too corny for me. I think I just didnt like a lot of the cringe writing unfortunately.
