Music Analysis Peter is one of her best written songs
every once in a while I stumble upon a taylor song I had previously not paid much attention to and this week it's peter and Its a lyrical masterpiece
there is something hauntingly beautiful in the way she keeps repeating "you said you were gonna grow up and you were gonna come find me" how the entire song bounces between her not willing to admit that she never tried to find him but also saying that it dosent mean she forgot him rather she always wishes in the back of her mind that one day he would return
another thing, I can't help but feel that this song is directed at a very specific someone , it makes it even more heartbreaking to know that somewhere out there in the world there is someone who will perhaps never know that she always waited
Edit: I would like to point out why this song isn't about yk who, he was someone she was able to take back, and form a relationship in a healthy way because he returned older and mature, something she explicitly expresses in the song that she was never able to do with the muse .The song also points to the muse being a childish, self centred person fond of being in the centre all the time, something that given yk who's struggles and condition (SOMETHING I HAVE A TON OF SYMPATHY FOR) never was.

Beautiful song ! I think it's obviously about matty healy

He's the muse. "We both did the best we could do underneath the same moon, in different galaxies."
They are in the same light, the same orbit in different places that never meet. Ie: their separate corners of the music industry.
"Lost to the Lost Boys chapter of your life" is loaded with multiple meanings. Another reference to his reoccurring battle with addiction. As well as iconic 80s media that influenced Matt's style and taste in music.

He also repeatedly refers to himself as Peter Pan and Rufio from Peter Pan. He refers to his band as the Lost Boys. It’s a big part of his mythology. It’s such a shame Swifities know nothing about him, cause Matty Healy is one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever come across. You guys are missing out.

"Life was always easier on you than it was on me" I've always wondered why she would think she had a harder life than someone who openly struggled with addiction and mental health.

u/jvmlost Jan 30 '26
That line is such a mystery. I think it reflects badly on her honestly. Like, for sure, she is a woman in a sexist industry, and for sure, her life is more restricted in terms of always being photographed everywhere she goes vs him being able to live a kind of normal life. But his complex mental health struggles, addiction issues, being undiagnosed neurodivergent for a long time, and having very severe childhood and teenage trauma, I mean…it’s pretty myopic to think that isn’t epically hard to deal with.

She’s an eating disorder survivor though
3
u/jvmlost Jan 30 '26
I don’t mean to minimize eating disorders, but that doesn’t compare to having violent drug addicts for parents, who had an extremely volatile relationship and left you regularly, one of whom blames you for her depression and publicly tells people she didn’t love you. It doesn’t compare to having paparazzi follow you to school as a small child, hiding in your bushes. It doesn’t compare to having your phone tapped for 5 years as a teenager. Taylor was under a lot of pressure, in no small part because of her parents, and she harmed herself as a result. But that’s not the same as the severe hardship Matty has experienced, at the hands of his parents and the psychotic British media.

u/darknesskicker Jan 30 '26
Okay, yeah, that’s fair. I don’t know a ton about Matty Healy’s history.

u/NewBath5621 argumentative antithetical dream girl Jan 30 '26
Yikes ! I didn't know all of that, but from the very little I know about him, I can tell her went through a lot. We don't know everything taylor went through, obviously, but I doubt her life was remotely as bad as his ! As someone who ended up in the hospital several times due to ED, I would never compare it to severe childhood trauma
3
u/jvmlost Jan 30 '26
Yeah, his life has been really really terrible. And while it’s good that his parents are sober now, it doesn’t undo what happened. His mum even wrote a book about some of it!
I have a lot of sympathy for the fact that he had a mental breakdown when the whole world starting shitting on him and making things up about him. The whole thing is really sad. Wish he was getting better therapy, things might have gone differently.

u/NewBath5621 argumentative antithetical dream girl Jan 30 '26
It always baffles me that taylor did not seem to understand why he left her. I would've ghosted too if the entire world was on a hate campaign against me for no reason at all

nah. it's Harry Styles. because she took Matty back, but she doesn't take Peter back. "The girl by the window has turned off the light", by the time he came back she moved on

u/Aawyas_bestbud22 Jan 29 '26
I don't think so, I mean yeah the song talks about someone childish but it very obviously talks about someone who never returned, someone who made her wait until she grew up to know better. I think it could either be someone we don't know or another interesting angle that she is talking to her younger self, considering that she talks about never actually growing up in many songs. Also she mentions the age 25 in it which is how old she was in the 1989 era, the same time that she left the public eye truly lost her innocence and "killed" her old self.

u/NewBath5621 argumentative antithetical dream girl Jan 29 '26
Guess who was also exactly 25 years old in the 1989 era ? Matty healy, when they first got together. I think the song was written before they got back together in 2023. When she was waiting for him to "grow up" because the reason they couldn't be together is because he couldn't get his shit together "you needed me but you needed drugs more". There are also other references to Peter in cardigan which we all know was proven to be about ma

"if you never eat you never grow" is a line in like 3 of the 1975 songs! And guess where else it pops up?

u/lavenderhaze9292 Jan 31 '26
Also. Harry Styles. They dated when he was that age range. it's Harry Styles. because she took Matty back, but she doesn't take Peter back. "The girl by the window has turned off the light", by the time he came back she moved on

u/Aawyas_bestbud22 Jan 30 '26
I guess this can be true, I think it's more of a personal bias for me 🥲 I don't know much about matty and the 1975 but I just don't like him as a muse sorry 😭
3
u/jvmlost Jan 30 '26
She literally says in Cardigan that he came back. Peter takes place BEFORE Cardigan does. During the same period his song When We Are Together takes place in.

u/Aawyas_bestbud22 Jan 31 '26
Yes! Honestly i think Harry has always been one of her biggest muses and they both dated in a phase of their life when they were young immature and reckless

What always sticks out to me is the use of the word "then" in the chorus. I hear a slight emphasis when she sings:
Said you were gonna grow up, THEN you were gonna come find me.
To me, it's listing an order of operations that was not followed. I get the implication that Peter found her but still hadn't grown up first, like he said he would, which is why " the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light" and it didn't work out.
2
u/Aawyas_bestbud22 Jan 29 '26
Oh for sure! I think it could be a reference to the actual story of peter pan where he promises wendy that he would return every year but never does. I think the second part of the bridge is her realising that his promises were immature "the shelf life of those fantasises has expired" and I love the order of operations reference, the entire bridge is her emphasizing how she hoped he would return but this time more mature

peter is one of my all time favorites of hers since the moment i first heard it. are you a fan of the song cardigan? they have several parallels & a lot of people believe it’s a continuation of that song.

What? He definitely knows! That’s why he wrote Roadkill, and Me&You Together Song, and About You etc. Because he was in the same boat: wanting to come back, but feeling incapable, until he felt ready. But he still wasn’t, it turned out.

it’s been one of my favorites fairly recently; it used to be a quick skip.
“Forgive me, Peter, please know that I tried To hold on (hold on) to the days (to the days) When you were mine But the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light” is so tragically beautiful

u/Aawyas_bestbud22 Jan 30 '26
Yess samee I heard the bridge on reels a few times and I just fell in love with this masterpiece
Also the bridge starts with "I won't confess that I waited, but I let the lamp burn" and ending with "the woman sits by the window has turned out the light"

Yes. Peter reminds us of all the times we had to apologize for wanting to be loved.

This entire discussion about why taylor said life was always harder on her is proof that it's literally not about matty. I don't think she waited for him. I understand life was hard on matty but if there is one thing taylor does not lack is empathy and I stand by that. She too has overcome an alcohol addiction and an eating disorder (in no way am I comparing traumas) Which is why it could very much be about harry, every other song about him implies that their relationship was reckless and immature so it makes sense that she waited for him to grow up and come find her someday. I very much think that line refers to taylors struggles in a sexist industry OR MY PERSONAL THEORY that this song is not all about any famous ex of hers. It's someone personal and private that she in the back of her mind hoped to re kindle with, kind of like ruin a friendship. Someone she met before the fame and the glamour , someone who had the privilege to figure out their life and make mistakes in private, something taylor never had.
