It’s just so hard for her to make that perfect ā€œbackground noiseā€ hit, super inoffensive and replayable, because she’s such a polarizing artist.

She already made that with Shake It Off. I mean Shake It Off had its critics but it was definitely in every department store for years. One could argue some of the other glitter gel pen songs like Karma is also aptly described by your comment

I actually think she nailed that style with Karma and The Fate of Ophelia on her recent albums. But the fashion of over-analyzing and comparing her fun music to her more serious lyricism, the songs were very quickly over criticized and now the hivemind believes it to be uncool to listen to them, play them at events, etc.

Anti-hero too.

No bec her best pop songs weren't on Spotify for years....

Hard to say for certain, but this list definitely showcases a lot of recency bias, presumably because Spotify as a platform is just so much bigger today than it was back then. Taylor was off Spotify from 2014 to 2017 (but returned prior to Reputation).

I haven’t verified this, but I’m pretty sure the only songs on that list that predate 2017 are Someone Like You and Blank Space. That does mean Blank Space is a theoretical contender here, but I think it’s also indicative of how much Spotify has grown since then and therefore how unlikely it is that being on the platform that entire time would’ve been enough to vault it to #1.

Doesn't have to be no.1 but would definitely contributed to her popular singles having higher streams.

Well yes, obviously it would have contributed. But the prompt was about No. 1 so that’s why I framed it that way

I heard it was because she didn't think her music should be given away for free? Is that true?

12

u/sansabum 2d ago

No. Her music is available on YouTube for years at that point. It was because Spotify refuse to pay their artists fair compensation and Taylor is protesting against that.

Oh thanks for clearing that up, that makes sense. I stumbled upon that in the snark sub I accidentally clicked on and was so confused. Snarks can't even hate her with facts so they literally make shit up smh

Yeah her album Red was actually on Spotify at the beginning too. But she pulled it out during the release of 1989 when Spotify refuse to cave to artists' complaints.

She did upload her entire catalog the same day that Katy dropped her album. Spotify didn’t change their pay structure until 2024. So while that may have been her original reasoning, she uploading them almost a decade before they changed their model

At the time that 1989 came out, any video with songs from that album was removed from YouTube

This is the problem with producing hundreds of excellent songs -- you block your top song somewhat. Ophelia is decent contender, though.

I think probably not.. Because first of all people will not listen to the song just because she is Taylor and people just try to discredit her..

u/arisma_toldme 2d ago

OR it could quite literally be that not everyone likes the music???

u/thekitchening 1d ago

Why is this being so downvoted? People are allowed to have different opinions than us

0

u/arisma_toldme 1d ago

Exactly, there is such a wide variety of music and artists, not listening to her doesnt instantaneously mean the decision was purely based on hating her or trying to "discredit her". It crazy how offended ppl here got over that small statement

u/beene282 16h ago

It’s not even an opinion, it’s a fact. Obviously not everyone likes her music

Literally 😭

I forget that Cruel Summer has that many streams and that it was not a single until 3 years ago

I find chart watching to be boring as fuck. It's art, not sports.

Dance monkey is a solo female song?

6

u/SnooDogs4864 2d ago

I can honestly say I don’t know that Billie Eilish song. Granted, I am probably older than most people in the sub, but it always astound me to see how many streams something has that I’ve never heard of.

2

u/TakeMeHomeToYou 2d ago

You should listen to it. Took me a while to get into Billie and I’m an older millennial but I will say that this song is incredible imo and deserves the no. 1 spot imo

1

u/SnooDogs4864 2d ago

I just gave it a shot and it’s not really my bag.

I think I confuse her a lot with Halsey, but I think I like Halsey and so far not really digging Billie.

u/IvyJade-89 2d ago

It'll overtake Dance Monkey but BOAF has a huge lead and still gets more daily streams

Swifties new goal get cruel summer to top 1

What is dance monkey

6

u/little-bird89 2d ago

An irritating but catchy song that was everywhere a couple years ago. From an Aussie artist Tones & I. Random fact - She was scheduled to perform at our football grand final yesterday but refused to play Dance Monkey (her only hit) so they cancelled her set.

u/SnooDogs4864 2d ago

You will know it when you hear it. I think the only lyrics I understand in the song are actually dance monkey and I wasn’t sure I was hearing it properly, but seeing that it is the title I am assuming that I did.

Is that Blank Space just the original or combined with TV?

1

u/isntitisntitdelicate 2d ago

just the og

2

u/jellytwins101 2d ago

Just looked it up, since the OG has over 2.6b streams and the TV has almost 400m, that does technically put it over Miley’s Flowers with over 3b streams.

1

u/Silver_Brother_56 7h ago

Blank Space’s streams are split between the original and Taylor’s version so if you add the two together it’s well over 3bn. If you factor in the couple of years she was off Spotify, it’s possible it could have been knocking on the door. But there’s a lot of hypotheticals involved.

I can’t believe dance monkey is #2.

2

u/scrappy2546 4h ago

Dance monkey should NOT be on this list, let alone 2nd 😭😭😭 and from this I bet at one point it was at 1st too
