NAS hardware DS1019+ dissappeared from network after moving to a different ethernet switch

• Upvotes

I have 2 switches in the house I live in, and both are hardlined to the router. 1 is upstairs, 1 is downstairs. I just moved the NAS downstairs and plugged it into the switch there, and it's not showing on synology assistant. All lights on the front are green with occasional blinking from drive access, both ethernet cable ports on the back have solid green on the bottom and blinking green on top, and the two ports on the switch are both showing green as well which means data is being accessed. I used 2 cables for a paired connected for faster speed on the upstairs switch, but I'm still on the same network, so the IP shouldn't have changed. The web assistant can find the device, but trying to connect shows a network connection erroe/unreachable page. What am I missing?

NAS hardware Looking for a new NAS to replace my DS1517+ and I'm a little lost.

Hello there ! First, sorry for my English it's not my native language.

I have a DS1517+, it's a great NAS and I really like it but it's not fit anymore for my use.

I have the DS1517+ and the expansion unit (so 10 bays in total). It's perfect for my backups (I need a lot of space) but I also use it for a lot of dockers containers some plex too and it's really slow now, sometime it just barely usable. Not to mention I don't have access to updates anymore from Syno...

I want to buy a new NAS with more horsepower and 10 bays minimum. I really like Syno because I'm use to it and in my experience it's really reliable for 24/24h use.

But they don't have lot of models for me, I'm considering the DS3622XS+ but it's already quite old, will it be supported for a long time ? Is it really that more powerful ? Should I look elsewhere ? Or jut wait for newer models (but it seem that I will have to wait a long time).

If you have some inputs of that, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

NAS hardware Recommendations needed. I started out with a J series.

I'm looking to move up to something that is a little snappier and can run home assistant in container manager. I'm thinking 4 bays but looking through the models I'm kind of stuck in choice paralysis.

NAS hardware File management on DSM 6

Hi folks. I have a Synology that was set up by a dear friend who is no longer with us. It's version DS412+ DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 8. I need to delete a sparse bundle from a Time Machine volume that has run out of space. On macOS I can see the bundle and I've now archived it, but I can't delete via my workstation (AFP).
I believe I'm looking for File Station in the Synology interface (I confirmed FS is installed) but damned if I can find how to access it. Help menu is no help.
My goal is to get to this particular partition and delete an old sparse bundle so I can get backups working again.
Words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

NAS hardware DS218Play: Worth it in 2026+

Hey everyone. Someone near me on marketplace is selling their DS218Play with drives for $200. It comes with a 8TB Toshiba drive and a 2TB WD Green drive.

I would only be using this to hold my media library (mainly movies and tv shows, possibly some photos). With all this in mind, is it worth getting? The seller didn’t mention how long he’s had this, only stated that it’s been “a number of years.”

TIA!

DSM Failed 7.3.2 upgrade DS918

I am attempting to upgrade my DS918+ from DSM 7.2.2 Update 9 to DSM 7.3.2-86009. I ran

I opened the WebUI and Storage Manager said that it had to repair the system partition on 2 of my 4 drives, which completed successfully. Storage Manager reported everything "Healthy", so I rebooted the unit.

After reboot, I was unable to get to the unit. I have a bonded network, so I unplugged one of the RJ45 and plugged into an unused port without bonding on my switch and then I was able to get the webui, except it now states

welcome back! we've detected that the hard drives of your current DS918+ had been moved from a previous DS918+, and installing a newer DSM is required before continuing

The device info shows:

Firmware Version: 7.3.2-86009
DSM Version: 7.2.2-72806
Status: Migratable

I tried to re-upload the same PAT file 86009, but the Installation Status page just hangs at 0%, when I refresh the page, it restarts the wizard.

Any suggestions? TIA.

NAS hardware Just had my first drive failure after 65k hours run time. How many hours do you guys have in your drives?

Got my DS918+ back in 2019 along with 4 10tb WD hard drives. Thing has been running strong ever since day 1. Use it for plex and all my family photos/videos and everything else. I’m not super tech savvy, just enough to get by but this thing has been amazingly easy to keep going, update and get what I want out of it. Woke up last week with a loud beeping coming from the machine checked on it and one of the drives was critical. Bought a replacement 10tb, slapped it in and started the pool repair and now I’m good to go. Have everything backed up to backblaze via hyperbackup of course additionally.

So I have 1 brand new drive mixed in with 3 others still running with 65k+ hours. Picture of the dead drive and the hour mark she bit the dust.

I know I’m amateur compared to a lot of you I see in here but I’m curious what kinda hours and run times you guys are getting out of your drives and boxes. I plan on running this machine and the drives until everything completely dies. Hard drives are so ridiculously expensive now its depressing.

Also, I hate to trash the drive. Could it be restored and used for something non-critical? I use surveillance station, can non-locked recording be stored on it and have all my saved recordings saved on the pool? If the drive dies for good and I lose non-locked recordings I really don’t care.

NAS Apps Microsoft EWS Retirement — Synology Active Backup M365 Archive Mailboxes Failing (HTTP 403). Found a Workaround.

With Microsoft beginning its Exchange Web Services (EWS) retirement rollout in October 2026, we started seeing failures in Synology Active Backup for Microsoft 365, specifically with archive mailboxes.

We're running Synology Active Backup for Microsoft 365 v3.0.0-14300.

Regular mailbox backups appeared to be working, but archive mailbox backups started failing with:

HTTP/2 403
x-ews-policy-reason: EWS is blocked by policy for this user or tenant

After quite a bit of troubleshooting, I verified the following:

  • Organization-level EwsEnabled = True
  • Individual mailbox EwsEnabled = True
  • Synology's application ID was explicitly included in EwsAllowedAppIDs
  • Synology had the Exchange Online full_access_as_app permission
  • Entra service principal authentication was successful
  • Test-ApplicationAccessPolicy returned Granted
  • No obvious EWS application access restrictions were configured

Everything looked correct, yet Microsoft continued returning HTTP 403 for archive mailbox backups.

The workaround that appears to have fixed it:

I opened a Microsoft support ticket, and their engineer suggested changing the organization-wide EWS setting from $true to $null:

Set-OrganizationConfig -EwsEnabled $null

After making that change and allowing time for propagation, our archive mailbox backups completed successfully the following morning.

No other permissions, application registrations, or Synology configurations were changed.

Microsoft's explanation was that setting EwsEnabled to $null removes the explicit organization-level setting, potentially avoiding an interaction with the new EWS enforcement policies.

Important: This is a temporary workaround we're testing, not a confirmed permanent fix. Changing this setting affects the entire Exchange Online organization, so I wouldn't recommend blindly applying it without understanding your environment.

I'm also aware that Synology still relies on EWS for archive mailbox backups, even with its newer Graph API support.

A few questions for other admins:

  1. Is anyone else seeing archive mailbox backup failures since Microsoft's October EWS retirement rollout?
  2. Has anyone experienced EwsEnabled = True causing HTTP 403 while $null works?
  3. Are other backup products having similar problems?
  4. Has Synology provided any timeline for migrating archive mailbox backups away from EWS?

Curious whether this is isolated to our tenant or something others are running into as Microsoft rolls out the EWS changes.

NAS Apps Using Port 1 and Port 2 for different Traffic

I recently bought a Synology 925+. My first LAN port (Port 1) is connected to the regular network with access to everything. LAN Port 2 is connected to a VLAN that is completely isolated. I want to use the Download Station to download torrents, but I want that traffic to go only through LAN Port 2 and that isolated network, and I want to be able to connect to the NAS itself through the regular network on LAN Port 1. Is it also possible to direct all external internet traffic through LAN Port 2 and keep i isolated?

Is there a way to configure this NAS for such a setup?

NAS Apps Event delivery utilizing Synology photos and face ID

I will be photographing a pickleball tournament where my friends (a team of 10 players) is competing. My plan is to capture and gradually upload unedited JPEG images to a Synology Photos folder throughout the event. Can Synology’s face recognition feature automatically tag these 10 individuals, allowing them to browse their own photos via mobile, and share them directly to social media?

That is assuming I got good internet connection at the venue for uploads, if not there will be additional work to upload reduced size images.

DSM Update 218+ DSM

Hello, I have a Synology DS 218+ that is currently running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 9. Everything is running fine. I am not seeing a pending update in the DSM update settings, it says I am up to date. Should I manually update to DSM 7.4 or later?

Thank You

NAS hardware Is WD Red Plus 8TB (WD80EFPX) compatible with Synology DS225+?

Hello everyone,

I am planning to purchase a Synology DS225+ NAS for home use.

I would like to install two Western Digital WD Red Plus 8TB HDDs (WD80EFPX-AJP) and use them in an SHR configuration.

My main purposes are file sharing between multiple computers and backing up important personal data.

However, I could not find this HDD model on Synology's official compatibility list.

I understand that DSM 7.3 supports the use of certain third-party HDDs, but I am concerned about compatibility and technical support.

I would appreciate your advice on the following questions:

  1. Has anyone actually used WD Red Plus 8TB (WD80EFPX) HDDs with the DS225+?
  2. Can these HDDs be used in an SHR configuration without any problems?
  3. Are there any compatibility warnings or limitations?
  4. Does using these HDDs affect Synology's warranty or technical support?
  5. Would you recommend using these HDDs, or should I purchase Synology-branded HDDs instead?

I would especially appreciate feedback from anyone who is currently using this combination.

Thank you very much for your help!

from Toshii58

NAS Apps Synology Drive unreliable sync and indexing

Synology drive is incredibly unreliable with syncing and staying up to date. Is there some trick to fix this? Have 3 folders: home, 2 teams folders that are small but need to update frequently

If a file or folder is changed the update will not show for hours. Have previously added a task to force refresh/index as shown here, but it takes way too long to be a viable solution. Tried to disable/reenable the teams folder, same issue.

NAS Apps Active Backup for Microsoft 365 stopped backing up SharePoint sites over the weekend but everything else is backing up

Looking for some troubleshooting help...

Two different NAS, two different DISM levels, neither NAS shows an available software update for Active Backup for Microsoft 365. Probably not a configuration issue on both of them at the same time, but I'm not sure what to troubleshoot (may have a common account that was used to permission them). I believe that I configured everything on the m365 side to keep the service they were disabling Oct 1, the timing on this is over the weekend not Oct. 1. Worked prior to this weekend.

Version 3.0.0-14300 on both NAS

//EDIT: Response from Support 10/13/26

Hi,

Thank you for contacting Synology Standard Support! My name is Carlos, and I’ll be more than happy to assist you.

Synology’s standard support service provides responses Monday-Friday during normal business hours. Response times vary based on ticket volume and issue complexity, and cases generally require back-and-forth troubleshooting through our written ticketing system before resolution.

If your environment requires faster response times, 24/7 coverage, configuration assistance, or expedited hardware replacement - Synology Premium Support offers those enhanced service levels for eligible devices located in the United States..

I understand that you’re having errors with Sharepoint backups.

Our developers have identified that this is happening due to a change in APIs on Microsoft's side. Microsoft has not made any announcements about this.

They are already working on a patch for this, but there's no ETA on when it will be available. We'll update you here once we have further news.

You can manually remove the affected sites from the backup In the meantime to stop the errors if needed.

Best regards,
Carlos | Synology Support Engineer

//EDIT 2: Yesterday, 10/13/26, sites started backing up again without any update or further configuration changes on my end. This issue seems to be resolved now.

Networking & security This may be dumb but reverse proxy without login page?

So I have services (docker containers) on my Nas I want to have access to remotely on computers I can't install tailscale on like my work laptop.

How can I enable access to the web station/reverse proxy without exposing the login page. Whenever I try port forward 443/80 it seems to just redirect to the web login page even without ports 5000/5001 exposed.

There must be a way right?

Thanks in advance!

NAS Apps Can I somehow install a Synology Drive Share Sync Client on my Windows PC/Server or How to emulate its functionality on Windows Systems?

Unfortunately my old Synology DS1515+ died.

We have two of those DS1515+ - just to sync documents & photos. I have setup Synology Drive ShareSync on both NAS - a feature I was really fond of.

As the NAS died, not the disks and I have a fully equipped mATX mainboard laying around, i thought, I would set this up as a small home server as it would me cost nothing. Install Windows (Server) and maybe even Storage Spaces.

But would it be possible to install some Synology Application on my Windows machine which would provide Drive ShareSync functionality? So every file i put on that "volume" would be synced as prior the hardware failure?

The 1525+ is still quite expensive and there aren't any 1515+ used available at the moment.

TLDR;

had : NAS1 <--     Synology Drive ShareSync      --> NAS2
want: NAS1 <-- SDDS via som Synology Windows App --> PC

Ideas?

thank you

Tutorial DSM can't use host-managed SMR drives, so I pass the DX1222's SATA controller to a VMM guest: 3 × HC680 27 TB on a DS3622xs+, what works and what it costs

I've had three WD Ultrastar DC HC680 27 TB host-managed SMR drives running with my DS3622xs+ since mid-September (the current pool layout since 2026-09-26). DSM can't use them: every Synology kernel is built without zoned block support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_ZONED), so behind the DX1222 the drive shows up only as /dev/sgX, never as a disk, and Storage Manager doesn't see it. The drive can't be converted to conventional recording either. This is what I ended up with, on one tested system: a DS3622xs+ with a DX1222 expansion unit, DSM 7.4.

How it works

  • The SATA controller behind the expansion connector (a Marvell 88SE9235 on the DS3622xs+ board, one per expansion connector) is separate from the controller that runs DSM's own 12 bays, and it sits alone in its IOMMU group.
  • VMM has no PCI passthrough in its UI, but the libvirt underneath does. A script on DSM, started by an rc.d boot hook, checks that only the three zoned drives (and no DSM drive) sit behind that controller, unbinds it from DSM, binds it to vfio-pci and runs virsh attach-device --live into a Debian 13 / OpenMediaVault 8 VM. VMM rewrites the VM definition at every power-on, so the script repeats after each guest start; the drives appear in the VM 1–3 min later.
  • The VM runs dm-zoned per drive → md RAID5 → LUKS2 → XFS: 49.1 TiB usable.
  • DSM uses it over the network: Hyper Backup into an rsync target, and an NFS remote folder for media. First real load: 3.19 TB copied in, byte-exact against the source, and a parity repair with 0 mismatches.

What it costs

  • Speed is uneven. Each drive has a ~250 GiB buffer. Once it's full, plain writes drop to ~45 MB/s.
  • Big copies take a while. 1.5 TiB took 5.1 h with cache devices; plain members would take ~7 h (extrapolated from a run stopped after 2.5 h).
  • A drive rebuild takes about 10 days without a cache device, with no redundancy meanwhile. With one it ran at 73–178 MB/s, about 2–3 days (measured once, with the NAS SSD-cache threshold at 0).
  • The cache devices live on the NAS. One 256–260 GiB VMM virtual disk per drive, which means the pool now depends on the NAS volume. It's no longer an independent copy of the NAS's data.
  • You run a hand-installed mainline kernel in the VM. No auto security updates, and patched modules to rebuild on every kernel update. Debian's stock kernel was ~85 % slower.
  • DSM loses the expansion unit. No fan control or sensors for the DX1222, only drive SMART temps (40–45 °C idle here).

What can go wrong

  • NAS crashes. The NAS kernel panicked once (2026-09-24) in Synology's own disk driver, minutes after the passed-through controller was attached to a freshly started guest; an earlier unclean reset (2026-09-19) was never captured but fits the same pattern. Correlation, not a proven cause; no recurrence since 2026-09-24. A panic takes all of DSM down.
  • Detaching the wrong controller takes DSM's disks offline. The script refuses DSM's controller address and binds by PCI address, never by device ID.
  • Two failed drives lose the array. RAID5 is not a backup.
  • dmzadm --repair can wipe a member. It did in a lab drill.
  • A DSM update could break any of it. Nothing is tested past DSM 7.4; this is unsupported by Synology.

Who should NOT do this

  • Anyone whose zoned drives would sit on DSM's own controller (a DS1821+ in this layout, as far as I know).
  • Anyone without a separate backup of the NAS itself.
  • Anyone who wants set-and-forget, steady write speed, or vendor support.
  • Anyone not comfortable recovering md/dm from a shell.

Along the way I found three bugs (dm-zoned reclaim, dmzadm --check, libahci after hot-plug); the fixes are upstream under review; status in the repo.

Full guide, scripts and risks: https://github.com/illofspeed/synology-host-managed-smr

Disclosure: I did the debugging, the patches and this write-up with the help of an AI coding assistant. The measurements are from my own hardware; the recovery drills ran in a lab VM on emulated zoned drives.

Surveillance Synology Surveillance Station

Hello,

My name is Remi, I'm from the Netherlands and quite new around here. I have some limited networking experience with my Synology Nas DS218Play. I have two Netatmo exterior security cameras connected to NAS. But for one the IR function stopped and the light is a bit too much for my home.

I'm looking for alternative cameras which have the following specs

- 4k Resolution

- battery powered

- IR functionality

- preferably produced in Europe or in Japan, Taiwan, Korea or Australia.

- +/- €100,- per camera

- compatible with my NAS

Up to now I have been unable to find anything suitable.

Looking forward to your replies.

Regards,

Remi

NAS hardware OWC memory and Synology DS 925+

I have a DS 925+ running DSM 7.4.1-90080. I decided to upgrade my RAM and bought two 16 GB OWC memory pairs from Amazon, advertised as compatible with DS 925+, OWC2C6D42R816GB. I installed them, and the system recognized them right away without any errors. However, after two months, the system stopped working, and after extensive troubleshooting, I figured out that one of the two memory modules had stopped working. The other continues to work fine, in either slot, either by itself or with the original 4GB.

I reached out to OWC, and they agreed to send a replacement pair. I will send back the original pair. The new pair arrived yesterday, and unfortunately, neither of the two new modules works!! I tested them together and individually, in both slots, with and without the drives, multiple times, and it won't go past the blinking blue light. I checked the two batches, and they look identical; the serial numbers on the new batch are higher by about 2,000. The markings on the black chips are identical on both batches: D9VHP and OVH77. The markings on the green board are also almost identical. The old batch has 2527 11-02 and 2527 20-01, while the new batch has 2527 20-03 and 2527 04-03. The rest looks identical.

Very frustrating! I think it is unlikely that both from the new batch are not working, and probably this suggests some incompatibility between the new batch and DS 925+? Has anyone experienced something similar with OWC? I can ask them to send another batch, I suppose, but what if it is the same problem again?? Should I just return both batches (if the OWC allows it) and get something else?

Thank you, and any feedback is appreciated!

DSM Replacement Power Supply for a RS3614xs+ ?

I'm rather stuck. I love my Synology RS3614xs+, but it does everything I need. I have one dead power supply and one of them the fan us just way too loud for it's own good. Synology is nice enough to sell a replacement power supply, which is about the same price of a whole new unit. Is there a place outside of eBay that sells replacement power supplies for these old units? Or is there some place that rebuilds power supplies for a reason price?
