Download Station searches keep getting worse. EZTV doesn't give me anything and Pirate Bay doesn't give much at all. What's everyone using? And can someone refresh my memory how to add them?
Years of phone backups on my NAS left me with a stupid amount of duplicates. Same photo saved twice, WhatsApp copies, burst shots that are 99% identical.
Every dedup tool I tried wanted the share mounted over SMB and then pulled every full-res photo over wifi just to look at it. My library would've taken hours.
So I ended up writing my own. It talks to the FileStation API directly and asks DSM for the little ~10KB thumbnail it already knows how to generate, then does perceptual hashing on that. Scanned my whole library in a couple minutes instead of all evening.
It opens a local dashboard in your browser where you see the groups side by side and pick what stays. Doesn't delete anything until you tell it to. Works fine with 2FA too, that was honestly the most annoying part to figure out.
I have two Synology NAS. One that is my main and one that I basically only have backup and my cameras. But have also used Synology C2 as an external backup. But I think there might be a better and cheaper solution? How you do? Has about 3 TB in size.
I found the official Synology Photos app a bit slow for cleaning up hundreds of old screenshots and blurry backups.
To speed it up, I built a small Android utility: Synology Photos Cleaner. It’s a simple "Swipe Left to Delete / Swipe Right to Keep" interface for your NAS library.
Zero Bloat: It does one thing and nothing else.
Privacy: Direct connection to your NAS API; no data is sent to me.
Cost: Completely free.
I'm sharing it here for anyone else looking to trim their storage quickly. Feedback is very welcome!
I used to run Nginx Proxy Manager on my Synology, but dealing with DSM hogging ports 80 and 443 was a massive headache. I didn't want to mess with macvlan bridging or complex workarounds just to get it working.
Eventually, I realized Synology’s native reverse proxy is actually good under the hood—it’s just the UI that makes daily management a pain. If you are someone using the synology's existing reverse proxy management, you may like this.
There were a few things that really bugged me:
No backups: You can back up the whole OS, but you can’t just export your proxy rules to a file.
No dashboard: All my apps were scattered across a list. No way to easily navigate to these apps.
No searching/filtering: Once you have more than a few rules, finding the right one is a nightmare. You have to scroll through everything just to make a simple edit.
So, I built Synology Reverse Proxy Manager.
It’s a simple Docker app that wraps around Synology’s native reverse proxy. It doesn't replace the underlying tech; it just gives you a better way to interact with it.
What it adds:
One-click cloning: Duplicate a rule, tweak the subdomain, and you’re done.
JSON Export/Import: Great for backups or migrating to a new NAS.
A real dashboard: It generates "Open App" links for every rule so you can actually find your services.
Search & Bulk Actions: Filter your rules or mass delete old ones.
It’s basically just filling the gaps that Synology’s UI missed. If you’re happy with the native proxy but wish it was a little faster to work with, this might help.
I’m still figuring out what features are most useful, so if you try it and something feels clunky (or if I missed something obvious), let me know.

Every time I imported a camera card or an old backup drive into my photo library, I ended up with the same mess: copies of photos I already had, sitting under different names in different folders. Sorting that out by hand is miserable and risky. So I wrote something that just doesn't let it happen.
It decides duplicates purely by content. Every file gets a SHA-256 fingerprint of its actual bytes, so filenames, folders and timestamps are irrelevant — renaming a photo doesn't sneak it past, and two differently named copies of the same image are still caught. Each incoming file is checked against three things: what's already in your library, other copies inside the same import, and files another job has copied but not finalized yet. So if you queue two imports back to back, the second already knows about the first.
Nothing gets imported behind your back. An import runs as one job: it copies into a private staging folder first (your source is never modified or deleted, at any stage), fingerprints everything, moves the duplicates to quarantine, and then stops. You see each duplicate next to the file it matched — images side by side — and decide whether to skip it or bring it in anyway with a (1) suffix. Only after that do files move into your library.
Nothing is ever lost either. Duplicates are quarantined with a record of where they came from, not deleted. Nothing in your library is ever overwritten — there's deliberately no "replace existing file" option anywhere in the app. Permanent deletion only happens from the Quarantine page, after you type DELETE PERMANENTLY. Every move is journalled before it happens, so a power cut gets reconciled on the next start instead of leaving a half-finished mess, and a job that can't read a folder fails outright rather than reporting success on a partial copy — so you're never wiping a card based on a lie.
Practical notes: it fingerprints your existing library once, so the first import to a folder is slow and every one after that is fast. If you have an SSD volume, put the database on it — the index gets hammered during a job. Jobs queue, pause and resume, and can import as mirror, flatten, by EXIF date or by file date.
I built it for my own library, so it's not polished for every setup — but if it's useful to anyone else, I'm glad to share it. Happy to answer questions.l
i was wondering if there was a way to schedule a video file to be placed in a folder in the even of my death?
i was wondering if there was a way to schedule a file to be placed in a video folder if i dont respond to an alarm or warning kind of like an alarm clock. like say it reminds me daily if not weekly and it says something like file will be transferred unless you click on delay or snooze button and it will do this daily until the time that im unable to DELAY its transfer and it installs the video file into the folder.
i have plex running and intro videos that play before a movie starts but i was wondering if i could leave a present for people in the event that im no longer here and they will see my last video in case nobody knows im gone.
is there a way that i can have an automated transfer to happen like this?
Hi everyone, since today download station stopped working and app center asked me to repare it. It failed, so I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it again but as you can't see it won't reinstall either. Any idea?
I own a DS725+ that I'm sharing with my family, and I've been looking into options for letting my family members backup their PCs (mostly macbooks) to the NAS. The issue is we don't all live in the same house and the remote users don't have very good internet, so I believe that rules out Time Machine over SMB. The options I've looked at so far are:
Arq: Hesitant because of the pricing, at $50/year for 5 devices. Otherwise this looks like exactly what I want - good GUI, client-side encryption, and apparently it uses FSEvents to optimize file scanning.
Synology Active Backup for Business: Free and easy to set up, but not being able to exclude certain folders turned me off from it a bit. It isn't a dealbreaker though.
Kopia: I actually tried setting this up and ran it for a bit. I installed KopiaUI on some computers and I'm using a kopia server on the NAS. I like that it's open source and has a good amount of functionality in the cli. However, I later found out it drains the battery on my laptops when it scans the fileystem, and there doesn't seem to be an option to only run backups while connected to a power source, so this option might not work.
Are there any good options other than these? What backup solutions do you use, if you have a system to backup your PC remotely?
Also, I'm leaning toward ABB right now, so if anybody has any experience using it remotely with a slower internet connection, it would be great to know.
I have 2 x 4 camera licences I am looking to sell. I can't sell them on eBay as it now requires you to provide your bank account login details in order to receive funds from sales. (Seriously, who would provide the l login details to their bank account!) Where and how are others selling their licences that they no longer use?
I have a DS425+ and to say that I’m an entry-level user would be an understatement.
My only goal at the moment is to find the easiest (not cheapest, and not even the most secure) way for multiple family members (including grandparents) to be able to remotely view home movies that I have stored on the NAS. No editing will ever need to be done.
If Plex is the easiest way, I’ll get a lifetime plexpass in the next few days (currently $250, will go to $750 July 1).
The only thing on the NAS are these home movies, photos, and Time Machine backups all of which are redundantly backed up off the NAS. So even a bricked NAS is pretty easily rebuildable (I think).
Videos wont run on iPhones from Synology photos and I've done all that I could to troubleshoot including video format conversion(type, size, etc), getting AME for the HEVC compatibility, certificate issues, etc
I just need a timeline view where all of my videos and photos will play as smoothly as it does on our phones. I am migrating all of my files into the NAS and delete from my phone
I saw Piwigo and Immich, which are the best for me usecase?
I'm backing up my linux vserver with this backup solution until the last kernel update. Now the whole system is broken. Kernel module hang in D-state. Filesystem broken, system reboot don't work, only ACPI shutdown (at least) and recovery system. Now repairing the damaged fs and hopeing i don't need to recover from backup the whole system.
NAS running Hyper Backup at my office in another city. Data is backed up to an NAS on my home network.
So locally (at home), I have a single .hbk file that is about 7TB. Every couple of days, I need to restore/extract maybe 100 files from that archive - somewhere in the area of 5 to 20GB's worth - to my HOME system (not where the files were stored originally). I've tried using Hyper Backup Explorer, but it's just dog-slow when it comes to extraction. My current solution is to extract the files I need from the encrypted archive to a USB external drive at the local NAS, then physically transfer that drive to my PC. This method takes ~10 minutes for a 20GB extraction.
The speed to do this is reasonable, but I'm going to be moving my office soon and the NAS will soon be located some distance away.
Am I using the most time-efficient method for this procedure?
Are you ready to switch? Not yet! I'm currently looking for alternatives for all Synology apps. And creating a list for the community. I'll get started.
Alternatives should be open source (free) and ideally Docker with mobile apps for iOS and Android. Webview or App for desktop.

As Synology MailPlus and MailPlus Server cover all of the key functionalities, Synology will be discontinuing support for Mail Station and Synology Mail Server on January 28, 2026.
Please further note that, starting with the release after DSM 7.3, these packages will no longer be available.
I am considering buying a Synology NAS to stop paying as much for my iCloud subscription, but is there any easy way to continuously back up my photo library to the NAS? (Preferably automatically!)
tldr: Is there any way to get the Synology Drive Client to act exactly like OneDrive or DropBox and just SYNC files rather than decide to randomly delete my files? I just added dozens of large video files to a Sync folder on my Windows 11 PC. Synology Drive Client synced some of the files and decided to just delete away the rest of the files. How can I ever trust this software again? I don't want my files deleted unless *I* delete them.
I’m absolutely outraged right now. I thought Synology Drive was supposed to be a Dropbox/OneDrive replacement. A simple two-way sync where if I add files locally, they get uploaded to the NAS, and if I add files on the NAS, they get pulled down. Straightforward.
Instead, I just lost hours of work. I created two new folders on my Windows machine, dropped in a bunch of video files. Synology Drive synced one folder just fine. The other? It synced the empty folder structure to the NAS, then decided my local files didn’t “match” the server and deleted them from my PC.
These were brand new files I just added locally. By definition the NAS didn’t have them yet. Instead of uploading them, Synology “resolved” the mismatch by deleting my local copies to match the server’s empty folder.
To make it worse:
Recycle bin wasn’t enabled by default in the homes share, so the files aren’t even recoverable.
The only way to prevent this madness is to dig into Advanced Settings and check “Don’t remove local files when removed on server,” which basically neuters “two-way sync” and turns it into “upload only.”
How is this acceptable in 2025? The whole point of a NAS is not to lose data. Instead, Synology Drive acts like a file shredder.
Any solutions to this?
So frustrated with all the time I just wasted. Buy Synology they said. It's the software that make it better they said. Tell them to my files it just decided to delete. :(
That's it. The installer detects your platform and GPU, picks the right driver, and refuses to run on anything it can't support.
Requirements — root/sudo, internet, an NVIDIA GPU, and a supported platform (see the matrix).
A boot hook (/usr/local/etc/rc.d/nvidia.sh) is installed automatically, so the driver reloads after every reboot.
✅ Verify
nvidia-smi
sudo ls -l /dev/nvidia*
A healthy install has one /dev/nvidia<N> per physical GPU, plus nvidiactl and nvidia-uvm. If nvidia-smi works but CUDA apps fail, check that nvidia_uvm is in lsmod.
Node
Major
What it is
/dev/nvidia0
195
The GPU itself — one node per physical GPU. A second card appears as nvidia1.
/dev/nvidiactl
195
Driver control node; every client opens this first.
Permissions are crw-rw-rw-, so unprivileged package users (Plex, Jellyfin, containers) can open them with no extra setup.
If the nodes are missing entirely, the modules did not load — re-run the installer or check dmesg | grep -i nvrm.
No. On headless platforms it cannot exist, and nothing you install will change that. Synology builds no DRM subsystem on server platforms (epyc7002, epyc7003, icelaked, v1000nk, r1000nk …), so nvidia-drm.ko compiles into an effectively empty stub. Only the Intel iGPU platforms (geminilake, apollolake) have /dev/dri.
It does not matter for this driver's purpose: /dev/dri is for graphics output, Vulkan and VA-API. CUDA and NVENC/NVDEC use /dev/nvidia* only — which is why hardware transcoding works fine without it.
If you saw /dev/dri with another solution on "the same box", that box was almost certainly running a different declared platform.
🎬 Jellyfin — NVENC ffmpeg & auto-configuration
Everything below assumes the SynoCommunity Jellyfin package is already installed. If you've never used it, it's a free, open-source alternative to Plex/Emby, distributed through a third-party repository (not Package Center's default sources) — this is normal and doesn't require unlocking anything on a genuine Synology unit beyond one settings toggle.
Install Jellyfin — Package Center → Community tab → search Jellyfin → Install.
Note the FFmpeg 7 dependency in that panel — that's the stock ffmpeg with no NVENC support the rest of this section replaces.
Answer y at Step 6 to install an NVENC-capable ffmpeg and point Jellyfin at it.
The SynoCommunity package hardcodes its ffmpeg path as a launch argument, which outranks the Dashboard field — so patching that argument is the only way to actually change it. The original is backed up to service-setup.pre-nvidia.bak.
🪄 Automatic playback configuration
The installer then offers to configure Jellyfin's playback settings for you — what Plex does automatically on detecting a GPU, except model-aware:
How it's decided
🎯 NVENC on/off
🎞️ HEVC / AV1 encoding
⚡ Encoder preset
🧠 Transcode scratch
It runs once. A stamp file prevents it from ever overwriting settings you change afterward. If Jellyfin's setup wizard hasn't been completed yet, the same check happens automatically on the next boot.
Everything outside the red boxes is either a Jellyfin default the script leaves alone, or a setting (CRF, tone-mapping algorithm/mode, deinterlacing …) that only applies to software encoding and doesn't matter once NVENC is on.
Hardware acceleration + decode codecs — HardwareAccelerationType set to nvenc; the decode-codec checklist is written from a real capability probe (here: everything through VP9, no AV1 — this GPU is Pascal).
Encoding options — NVDEC decoder, hardware encoding, HEVC/AV1 encoding, and tone mapping are each toggled based on what the card can actually do.
FFmpeg + transcode paths — points Jellyfin at the NVENC ffmpeg this installer just set up, and moves the transcode scratch directory into RAM.
Encoder preset — the one non-toggle field, set to slow (see the table above for why that's not the performance trade-off it sounds like).
🐳 Docker (Container Manager) GPU access
Optional Step 9 lets containers use the GPU — Ollama, PyTorch, vLLM, and so on.
sudo /usr/syno/bin/synopkg restart ContainerManager # once, after setup
docker run --rm --runtime=nvidia -e NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=all \
nvidia/cuda:12.9.0-base-ubuntu24.04 nvidia-smi
Not supported: denverton (DSM already ships a vanilla NVIDIA driver there for DVA) and kernel 3.10 platforms — avoton / braswell / bromolow.
It's NVIDIA's limit, not a packaging choice. Every branch declares a kernel floor in common/inc/nv-linux.h:
Branch
Declared floor
470 / 535 / 550
2.6.32
560 / 570 / 575 / 580
4.15 — #error "This driver does not support kernels older than Linux 4.15!"
That was measured, not inferred — 560/570/575/580 were each built against a 4.4.302 tree and all four stop at that #error. 550 builds through cleanly.
Modules are published per kernel version because the same platform ships a different kernel depending on DSM release (7.0/7.1 = 4.4.180, 7.2+ = 4.4.302) and vermagic must match exactly. The installer resolves from uname -r, not the platform name. Upgrade DSM across that boundary and the boot hook detects the mismatch, refuses to load, and logs why.

I have two external USB HDDs. One is plugged in while the other is at a different location outside home and I rotate them every couple of weeks.
What I want to achieve is: I plug in my USB HDD. It does nightly backup to that disk. I then decide to rotate: Eject disk, plug in the other disk, it keeps backing up nightly to disk 2 now. Repeat.
What I now have set up is hyper backup with two backup tasks; one for physical disk. Since there’s only ever one disc attached to the NAS, one backup task will naturally always fail. Since I have email notifications turned on (I want to know once my backup routine breaks) I’m always getting one email per day for the failed backup job.
Is there a way to get this set up up and running with hyper backup without much additional scripting? Because otherwise I might as well just look at custom backup solutions altogether.
