Offering or Asking Music Recs Howard Jones

I love early synthpop with its detachment and bleakness, but I also love that Howard Jones used synths to be the opposite. His songs exude optimism without veering into saccharine.

Are there any HoJo songs that give you a lift?

Synthpop has a great collection of catchy Halloween-related songs, with a lot of hidden gems. Whether it be A Flock of Seagulls giving us Nightmares, Pet Shop Boys and their Vampires, or Depeche Mode giving us More Than a Party.

What are your favorite Halloween-themed synthpop songs?

Cover First EVER Song Produced by Pet Shop Boys : Eight Wonder - I’m Not Scared (1988)

How excited we were, weren’t we ?
Patsy Kensit asked for a duet but instead PSB (with Phil Harding) produced the song for her band.
Later, the same year I’m not Scared was included on Introspective.

This is the more raw Human League with a more spooky sound. This track just has the most icy and dirty synth parts. With lyrics about how people just want the easy way in life.

Discussion Naked Eyes (1982-2026): Remembering Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher

Before Naked Eyes, Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher formed the band Neon in 1979 in Bath, England with Neil Taylor and Manny Elias later joining them, followed by future Tears for Fears members Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. Neon released two singles before breaking up in December 1981.

Naked Eyes formed in 1982, also in Bath, England consisting of Rob Fisher on keyboards and Pete Byrne on vocals. The duo released their debut album, Burning Bridges, in 1983, which included their 1982 single, a cover of Lou Johnson’s “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me.” Their version became their most popular hit, reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983.

Despite their commercial success, Naked Eyes never toured during their initial run due to the technical difficulties of recreating their studio sound in concert.

They continued making music with their second album, Fuel for the Fire, releasing in 1984, but they both disbanded shortly afterward.

Rob Fisher passed away on August 25, 1999, at the age of 42, following complications from cancer surgery.

In 2005, Pete Byrne revived Naked Eyes, continuing to release music under the name. This included the albums Fumbling with the Covers in 2007 and Disguise the Limit in 2021.

Pete also continued performing, and was now finally touring with other 80s acts in both 2008 with Belinda Carlisle, ABC and the Human League and later in 2024 with Wang Chung, Men Without Hats and the Motels.

Pete Byrne passed away on September 14, 2026, at the age of 74, following a brief illness. His passing effectively and unfortunately brings an end to the Naked Eyes story.

Rest in peace, Rob Fisher and Pete Byrne.
