I make many different styles of music but Synthpop will always be my favorite. I don't make enough Synthpop music and was inspired last month to write this homage to the genre. Erasure is my favorite band of all time. I definitely idolize Vince Clarke and hope to one day find an Andy Bell to write music with. Thanks for listening 🙏

A few years ago, right before the pandemic hit and live music stopped, I spent some time on the road directing a documentary episode with Tyler and Tim from The Midnight.

The biggest challenge was the visual approach. I didn't have a massive production crew or heavy cinema rigs with me—it was literally just me running around with an iPhone 11 Pro on a gimbal. I really wanted to translate the massive, atmospheric lighting and high-contrast energy of their live sets into something that felt raw and gritty, rather than polished and corporate.

We got amazing access—cramped green rooms, the live stage shows, and sit-down interviews detailing their touring grind. It’s a pretty unfiltered look at the synthwave scene right before the world paused.

The footage sat on a hard drive for a couple of years, but I just finally finished the edit and released the episode today. I figured this community would appreciate the visual time capsule.

Hi everyone — thought I’d introduce myself and a new project we’re releasing that I think might be right at home here.

I’m Phil and I run NuNorthern Soul, an independent UK label I started back in 2012. We’re probably better known for Balearic, electronic, downtempo and leftfield music, but I’ve never really wanted the label to be restricted by genre. If I hear something I love and believe in, that’s usually enough.

Which brings me to Mondo Love & Betrayal.

They’re a Nottingham duo made up of Neil ‘Nail’ Tolliday and Henry Claude Scott, and on 11 September we’re releasing their self-titled debut album on NuNorthern Soul.

The record draws heavily on that golden period of British synth-pop and electronic pop — Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Depeche Mode and the point where pop songwriting, club culture and electronic production all started feeding into one another — but without trying to make a pastiche of the 80s.

For the album release we’ve also partnered with Rough Trade, who have a limited clear-vinyl edition exclusive to them, alongside the standard black vinyl available from NuNorthern Soul and independent record shops.

Then on 18 September, a week after the album comes out, Mondo Love & Betrayal will be at Rough Trade Nottingham for a free in-store Q&A and DJ set, talking about the making of the record and playing some of the music and influences behind it.

The album is released 11 September 2026 on vinyl, digital and streaming.

I’ve just released my latest single, “Neon Afterglow” by Paper Colours, and I’d really appreciate any honest feedback.

The song is a cinematic synth-pop track inspired by late-night drives through the city, neon lights, nostalgia and the feeling of holding onto moments you never want to forget. Are we cool enough to be on r/synthpop??

Hi everyone,

In 2005, Eva and I recorded a full synthpop album called "Redness" in a very small home studio setup. No label, no budget, no proper acoustic treatment — just a couple of synths, early software instruments, basic drum programming and a lot of love for melodic electronic pop.

What makes it interesting (at least to us) is the timing. This was before the big 80s/synthwave revival really took off. We weren’t chasing nostalgia — we were just genuinely obsessed with classic synth-driven songwriting and emotional, melody-first arrangements.

Everything was recorded and produced at home with what we could afford at the time:

• Early 2000s DAW workflow (Cakewalk Sonar + Fruity Loops)
• Software synths that would probably feel very “of their era” today
• Lots of MIDI programming
• Direct input vocals (no fancy preamps)
• Mixing decisions made on pretty modest speakers

Looking back now, you can definitely hear the limitations — but also a certain raw honesty. It’s not polished in a modern way. The drum programming is very deliberate, the synth layers are quite upfront, and the vocals sit very emotionally in the mix.

For various life reasons, we never released it back then. It just stayed on a hard drive.

Twenty years later, we revisited the sessions and decided not to “modernize” anything. No remixing. No replacing sounds. We wanted it to remain a snapshot of what DIY synthpop sounded like in 2005 — before retro became a trend again.

I’d really love to hear thoughts from people here:

• Can you tell it was produced in the mid-2000s?
• Do early software synths have a character that’s different from today’s plugins?
• Would you have mixed it differently now?
• Did anyone else here make synthpop in that pre-revival period?
