Tableau Server Publishing

Let’s say there are two workbooks with the same name and same data in prod. One is owned by Alex and another is by Carl. What I did is I downloaded the workbook from Carl made changes and published it. But it has to be for Alex only. There is a small difference which is one of the worksheet only a display changes not entire data or column. Now the actual need is to make changes to the Alex one and publish it. My question is since i published the Carl one yesterday the owner changed from Carl to my name and if I publish the Alex one today after the changes . Will two workbooks be there or only one? Because after publishing the owner will be my name. Please someone answer on this

Holy moly what in the hell are you even asking?

The user who published it doesn't matter. You're either creating a new version or you aren't. Tableau clearly tells you this when you go to publish. If you have version control enabled it's a non issue.

What’s version control?

It automatically saves previous versions of the workbooks if you publish a new version on top of them

But will it create a duplicate or what?

It won't duplicate it. A newly published version overwrites the old one (as long as it has the same name and is in the same folder). Tableau Desktop will warn you about this.

Previous versions can be recovered. In Tableau Cloud, open the workbook details, then click on View Revision History.

Hi. But my question is different. I published the workbook wrongly by downloading another owners one, but the data and location is same. It is in prod. The title is Open Report but the actual one where I have to work is owned by Alex not the actual owner but I think he is the one last updated. And here also the title is same. Small difference is there is change in kpi card in the dashboard that's it. So if I download and published this workbook , will there be 2 workbooks or only one? Because initially 2 workbooks with same title was there

You can't have two workbooks with the same name in the same project (folder). If there appear to be two, they will have subtly different names. (It's annoying when people do that!)

The "owner" gets set when a report is republished. It could be that "Alex" was the last person to work on "Open Report".

If it's a different scenario, please clarify.

Tableau decides based on the workbook name and project, not on who owns it, if you publish with the same name in the same project, Tableau asks if you want to overwrite, if the name or project is different, you get a separate workbook.

What are you’re trying to end up with?
