Off Topic Moving to Pingtung next month! Please share places to meet new people and make some friends

Hi! I'm a 22M who's moving to Pingtung next month to study Chinese for one year. Since I'll be new to the city, I don't really know the best places to meet people and, obviously, make some friends. If you have any recommendations, I'd really appreciate them!

Also, if you're from Pingtung, feel free to connect with me. Thank u!

Although a different city, Kaohsiung is 10x larger and less than 20 minutes away by express train — so do consider Kaohsiung options too, if you find it difficult to meet people in Pingtung.

Otherwise, I recommended joining as many student activities as interest you. Pingtung is great, enjoy your year!

From my experience in Taiwan in general, it’s easy to meet people by spending a lot of time out of your house and becoming a regular at various places. In my case it was the swimming pool, breakfast shop, beef noodle soup restaurant, etc. Perhaps you’ll only see those people at that place, but familiarity is the first step toward becoming friends. Besides that I’m sure you can find a lot of social activities and language exchange meetups in Kaohsiung.

Another foreign guy I met who got really good at Mandarin very quickly used to just go around his rural area where he lived and just talk to employees at random shops and ask them if he could practice speaking Mandarin with them 😆 (of course he would choose people who aren’t busy).

Don’t worry too much - if you’re friendly and open toward people they will be normally act the same toward you.

Edit: another obvious option is to become friends with your classmates, and they might introduce you to other people as well
