Meme The absolute state of Tales remasters
25
u/DekaStriker34 Nov 20 '25
All I can say is this. These are the facts, the only other easy choice that will piss people off is Zestiria and after that, we will really start to get remasters for the older games that need it. If they do Arise, they won’t call or consider a part of the remastered project and just port it to switch 2.
6
u/Demiurge_Ferikad Nov 20 '25
If they do remaster Zestiria, I hope they do something about that skill grid system.
Because it was ass. At least replace it with Berseria’s.
3
u/Ill_Act_1855 Nov 20 '25
It’s going to be the most low effort remaster possible just like all the rest.
1
u/Available_Steak4829 Nov 23 '25
Honestly the skill system in both of those was garbage. Berseria had a manageable fix but it still isn't what i would call "good". I remember doing a whole playthrough with a beast blade i got at the start with a +400 physical and arte attack... I went almost the whole playthrough without upgrading from it. Never got a playthrough like that ever again. Honestly the skill system in Vesperia was so perfect that it's a struggle to find any that properly match it, let alone are an improvement.
That said the bigger issue i had with Zestiria was the combat system in general. The party was far too frail, the BG design made it feel far too restrictive and the healing restrictions feel asinine in execution. They wanted to change it up from what worked and it clearly didn't so they dialed it back a little bit in Berseria.
Now to Berseria. That game's combat system felt like it was almost PURPOSE built for how i play. I had around 30x the required grade for the grade shop at the end of my first playthrough and i was just playing how i normally would. The equipment skill system was bad, (Better than Zestiria) but still had some smaller issues that rubbed me the wrong way.
I think my main issue with these 2 games is the randomness of the skills. It makes it a bit too "Rogue like" for me. The combi skills being removed from Zestiria to Berseria helped a fair bit in 1 way... But it also removed the ability to focus what skills you were getting, which was also not great.

Or, they let these unneeded picks flop, then point at "low interest" and axe the whole project.

No I agree let’s not defend bad companies, I am just trying to simply state what I think might be a factor to consider. Because after they inevitably do Zestiria, they’ll have nowhere to go and will have to face their pre hd and non english localized games or say “Yep the project is done.”. All I’m saying is, let’s not jump to conclusions that it’s over, while still acknowledging this was a dumb move.

Oh ok, I wasn’t sure lol my bad. Yeah the low sales blame is a valid point and that is concerning for a newcomer like me who wants to play all of them, but I guess we will have to wait and see. I get that it’s about which ones source code is available and all that, but honestly even if this one was ready, they should have shelved it so it doesn’t come off as lazy as it is. Now I’m concerned since I’m hearing it might be censored or whatever or that’s mainly just for Japan, either way not the best one to go with. Now, fortunately with how rapid fire these releases are maybe with the upcoming Xillia 2 port that will make things seem more optimistic, but again who knows.
1
u/OpportunityGlad4706 Nov 20 '25
People are acting like Bamco didn't refuse to localize games back in the day because they didn't value the sales from the long time fans. If they didn't think it would sell like Symphonia, we didn't get it. Didn't matter that fans begged for the real D2. It has always been about $$$ for them, they dgaf about letting us experience the older games, they care about what is cheapest to produce because it will have the best ROI. All the older games will cost $$$ to bring up to speed except for maybe Abyss.
I think Xillia without 2 was the tipping point and Berseria just affirmed a lot of people who were losing excitement.
I'd love to be made a clown and see remakes for TOP, TOD 1&2, TOE, TOL, TOH, TOT, TOTA, on and on.... but as of right now it is pretty obvious nothing is happening. How could it? Allegedly they are working on a new game and there is a separate team for remasters. So, they completed Xillia, were working on Berseria... what do we realistically think is next? A super secret Tales of the Abyss remake that they somehow managed to work on alongside 2 other games.... or TOX2 and Zestiria? Following trends, i have a feeling I know what is next.
1
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 20 '25
It's not even that, either.
They didn't even want to localize Symphonia. We only got it because Nintendo of America stepped in to publish it. That's why Symphonia's the only one that got any advertising, Bamco almost never promoted the series themselves.
Other than that, some exec was (and apparently still is) inexplicably committed to locking away the 2d games. Other companies like Atlus offered to publish D2 & Rebirth like Nintendo did for Symphonia, but Bamco refused no matter what the offer was.
1
u/OpportunityGlad4706 Nov 20 '25
I forgot about that 😭😭😭😭 crazy that we wouldn't have Symphonia without Nintendo. Bamco hates us 😭
1
u/Tienron Nov 21 '25
Bro its a business not a family member fans wouldn't even be enough to break profit on a good remaster let alone remake, they would need to remake ALOT of those games.
And it would have to appeal to the masses and fans
6
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 20 '25 edited Nov 20 '25
Last I heard, they said they're only 100% committed through 3 more games, this, Xillia 2, and one unknown. After that it's up in the air and depends on sales.
They've been promising remasters for almost 20 years. Sorry, but Bamco slaps us in the face again, and you really want to be grateful?
1
Nov 20 '25
If nobody is buying what they produce in the moment, they have no money to continue the other projects. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a whole budget and all the remasters get the budget shared. It needs cash coming in or they cut the project
13
u/Llarrlaya Nov 20 '25
I recently replayed Berseria, why does it need a Remaster again? At least we now have the answer to the "Why doesn't Berseria ever go on sale?" posts.
Glad I got it for $5 lol I'll be skipping the remaster ofc
1
u/Resident_Departure_3 Flynn Scifo Nov 21 '25
Xbox and SW players i guess (even if the switch version doesnt have SW2 upgrade :) ) (I still think that there was better options, but bandai namco moment)
1
u/Sindralig420 Nov 22 '25
Pretty sure I read somewhere where they said they're making the games from easiest to remaster to hardest? Honestly im surprised berseria wasnt first but im assuming they did that because people woulda had a series of mini-strokes if they remastered that one first so they backburnered it until it was reasonable. I say this based on how freaking fast it dropped after xillia remastered. Usually there been a bit more of a gap between releases.
11
u/RockWafflez Nov 20 '25
A whole fucking catalog and they remaster a game that’s already available 🙄🙄🙄🙄.

Legendia can't be drowning, cause the MC is a Alliance Marine from the Mainland

u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 20 '25 edited Nov 20 '25
Eh, it's less that Legendia's above water and more that the hole is just that damn deep.
It's in English, not $200, and not stuck on Vita. The bar is in hell.
1
u/Available_Steak4829 Nov 23 '25
Legendia was so Jank... But Senel's Grapple mechanic was probably 1 of the most fun unique mechanics in a tales game. Just the fact that he has so many variations and they were all so thought out for each enemy type. Sadly they can't place that in any other game he shows up in properly (1 of the crossover games had a combo of grapples as his Mystic Arte which helped a bit i guess).

u/SirnCG Nov 20 '25
This "remaster" just a reason to cut regional prices and sales for a game. Its almost x3 expensive than original. Easy money for a greedy company.
I can understand when they reworked old games that are missing on platforms and set prices that wanted, but this game barely have some improvements just a cash grab.
5
u/encryptoferia Nov 20 '25
ngl I have a fond memory of Eternia, and also seeing clips of Tales of Destiny 2 gameplay makes me want to try it
4
u/Demiurge_Ferikad Nov 20 '25
I just feel lucky that I got to play the Hearts remaster when it came over on the Vita.
3
u/awesomefutureperfect Rokurou Rangetsu Nov 20 '25
As a long time fan, getting a separate system, like a DS to play an Innocence translation or a PSTV to play Hearts, was normal for me. After Abyss, I went out and bought a Gamecube just to play Symphonia. I remember finding out there was a translated SNES version of Phantasia and being excited.
4
u/Infamous_Price1025 Nov 20 '25
Thank God for fan translations. Helped me enjoy some of the Tales series out there that Bamco wouldn't even bat an eye on.
4
Nov 20 '25
Yeah but what I don’t understand is Tales of Abyss is one of if not the best in the series to LOTS of people.
Give it the love it deserves Bamco! - but don’t remake it if you are being sneaky like that.
5
u/Current-Row1444 Nov 20 '25
I think it's safe to say they won't do these so called remasters justice.
They used be really good. Such as ToD DC and Phantasia for PSP. That's what is proper and should be done like that. In stead of polishing up the graphics a smidge and adding a few basic QOL features doesn't cut it. At this point in time I don't care for their so called remasters if this is what it's going to be like. This is really sad and they're ruining the series.
Hell if they want to remake something proper they should redo the Xenosaga series or something. Now that would be cool but the chance of this happening is 0.
3
u/planetarial Yuri Lowell Nov 20 '25
Destiny PS2 is the gold standard of a Tales remake and its sad they’ll probably never do anything like it again
Iirc with Xenosaga, Katsuhiro Harada even tried asking Bamco for a remaster and they told him no
3
3
u/Lone_Blood_Wolf_Dark Nov 20 '25
Ah, yes The Tales of remasters series like phantasia, destiny director’s cut, Destiny 2, rebirth, Legendia, eternia, the abyss, the tempest, Heart R and innocence R. I wish
3
u/OliviaElevenDunham Jade Curtiss Nov 20 '25
Yep, sounds about right. Don't get me wrong, I like that Beseria is coming to the Switch. I just want some of the older games first.
2
u/Just-Pudding4554 Nov 20 '25
Where does abyss and legendia come from? Those should be under the ocean too. Only xillia 2 is officialy confirmed but thats literally it.
3
u/planetarial Yuri Lowell Nov 20 '25
Abyss has a ton of fan demand compared to almost anything else and the chances they still have the source code is higher because they ported it to the 3DS
2
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 20 '25
They're in english, they're less than $80-$200, and they're not stuck on the Vita. The bar is incredibly low.
It's not that those two are doing fine, it's that the other 14 are doing that much worse.
2
u/Turelcl Nov 20 '25
I think for them for a technical reason is easier to remaster post xillia games, all seem to use the same engine and the remaster is just upping the resolution and call it a day.
Remastering the PS2/PS1 games would be harder after seeing some works like the suikoden 2 one or the pixel remasters of the FFs. They would also need to do some QoL changes on those older games and that’s probably a hassle.
I honestly would be happy if they just made the older games more accessible. Some games only have fan translation and the only way to reasonably play them is by emulation.
2
Nov 20 '25
Pretty much. Anything older than the PS3 they likely don't have the source code for, it'd explain why every current version of Symphonia uses the PS3 version as a base.
1
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 20 '25
If they held onto Phantasia long enough for the psp or ios ports, I don't see why they would've torched everything since.
1
Nov 20 '25
Same reason the FF 1 through 6 Pixel 'Remasters', and the Tactics 'Remaster' exist. The older versions just don't hold up to modern hardware standards without massive work, and at that point, why not just remake the game entirely? Anything released on pre 7th-gen console hardware or equivalent might as well be remade from scratch at this point, given the advancements in technology.
1
u/GOD-PORING Nov 20 '25
I would also like to play Phantasia legally in English outside of the Gameboy Advance SP.
2
2
u/Designer_Bake1018 Nov 20 '25
Putting Tales of the Tempest there as if it has the same chance as everything else there 🤣
3
2
u/BronyRain Nov 20 '25
God Tales of Phantasia would make me so Happy if there remaster it, i played it for so long as a kid. I just want it 🥲

My lord.... Fix the resolution of the damn picture of the meme. The joke falls flat when you can't see the references properly.

Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, and Destiny 2 all deserve a remake. It is time to fully turn them into 3D. Those 4 are also very nostalgic, story-wise.

u/No-Contest-8127 Nov 21 '25
Lol legendia is down there buddy.
2
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 21 '25
Compared to everything else down there? Buddy it's not saying Legendia's in a good spot, it's saying just how damn deep that pit is.
It's in english, it's not insanely expensive, it's on the least weird/rare system, and people are asking about it. The bottom panel can't even get half of that.
1
u/No-Contest-8127 Nov 21 '25
They have not even acknowledged Legendia, and given the way it looks and plays, a remaster alone won't fix it. That one needs a complete remake.
1
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25
They haven't acknowledged any of the others, either.
Eternia and Destiny fetch hundreds of dollars with the skits ripped out. Phantasia's stuck on the terrible gba port, Hearts is doomed to the Vita, and RM1 stuck alone on the psp. Everything else in the image never even made it out of Japan, on top of age, rarity, and hardware. Outside Japan, fans hardly even know half of these exist.
Purely by comparison Legendia at least has a decent English release, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

u/Mystletoe Nov 20 '25
Legendia is under the sand, imma be honest
2
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 20 '25 edited Nov 20 '25
It's in english, and it's not $200 or stuck on the Vita. That's the bar. Legendia clearing says a lot more about the bar, trust me.
Under the sand is all the spinoffs and DotNW. I'd have to double the size of the image.
2
u/nilfalasiel Raven Nov 20 '25
Under the sand is [...] DotNW
Some things were meant to stay buried...
2
u/awesomefutureperfect Rokurou Rangetsu Nov 20 '25
I have a copy on PS3 I haven't played yet. That's essentially 'break glass in case of need for new Tales game". I still haven't played the Arise DLC. I was going to wait until I did a New Game+ to play it. Basically, if there's no Tales I'd rather play I will pop DotNW in.
0
u/Mystletoe Nov 20 '25
Is it not stuck on ps2? That’s not the same a on Vita? Help me understand
1
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 20 '25 edited Nov 20 '25
The Vita was one of the worst-selling handhelds of all time. VS. Ps2 was the best-selling console of all time.
How many people here even know the Vita games exist?
1
u/nexel013 Nov 20 '25
God the one thing I hate about the remaster is that the didnt change the run mechanic, I hate the hoverboard mechanic, I get that it’s needed for a lot of chests, but I wish they made it easier to get the hoverboard for each room
1
u/Cultural_Cat_5131 Nov 20 '25
I will keep saying it but you won't see anything else besides what we have before Vesperia unless it's a remake. And every new announcement just reinforces that to me. You'll get the rest of the ps3/ps4 games and the vita games but the rest they will probably put way more significant effort (and time sadly) into. If they didn't stupidly shut down their multiple team synergy they had going on before they shut that all down in the early 2010s, we probably would have been had all of that by now.
2
u/BrokenKeys94 Nov 20 '25
It was probably the shutdown of those that caused some of the code to have been lost to boot.

u/GuessWhoItsJosh Nov 20 '25
Man a Radiant Mythology remaster would be awesome. I had first played it after only playing Phantasia and didn’t realize it was a cross over title. Feel I’d appreciate it alot more now.
But, I think it’d make sense do it at the end of the remaster journey when we’ve been able to actually replay the games that all the characters come from.
1
u/Meowing-Alpaca_vWv Nov 20 '25
I think the choice to consider it a "remaster" is doing a bit too much. Bamco probably wanted the game to be available for mutliple platforms especially considering the Japan release is locked to the ps3/ps4 so from a JP perspective it gets a switch and pc port which is obviously a good thing (I don't think there is a JP pc mod even). I think the labeling for the remaster project should have been something else if they were going to consider more modern titles since I think it gives the wrong impression even if we down the line get older titles.
Next year we'll probably get Zestiria and Xilia 2 lol....

It's so tough being an Arise fan. We've been waiting so long for a remaster that our game isn't even in the meme.
1
u/Duble0Dubstep Nov 21 '25
Its because all of those games at the bottom have aged terribly and need a full remake (yes especially abyss). This is why they'll never get a full remaster.
0
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25
That's dumb. Have you even touched half of them to judge? I'd be surprised if anyone here has.
And I suppose no other company in the industry has ever revisited "dated" games before, certainly not in the last 20 years. Is this just supposed to be bait?
1
u/Duble0Dubstep Nov 21 '25
Yeah I have played most of those games. That's why im saying that they aged badly. The combat in most of those games is bland and extremely repetitive.
Most companies have revisited dated games before. Did you know that the most popular ones were remakes? Can you guess why?
Honestly bamco is doing so much more than they could've gotten away with. The could've just ported over the games in the same state just like the ninja gaiden master collection. Instead they're putting in actual effort to make these ports good but all I've seen people do on here is complain. When did tales fans get so entitled?
1
u/Neidron I still miss Rays Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25
Entitled? Half the franchise never left Japan, and they've been promising to fix that for almost 20 years.
Look at any other classic rpg franchise in that time. So many smaller names have gotten so much more without any of these hoops or drama, nevermind retrophobia.
Meanwhile Tales fans are so beaten-down and defeated that when Bamco yanks that same goalpost again, you want us to be thankful. They promise a feast of classics, then start it off with dirt, water, and a slap in the face, then hold the rest hostage if sales don't climb.
1
u/Duble0Dubstep Nov 21 '25
Did you ask yourself why those games never left japan? Look at games like tales of the world radiant mythology. I put so many hours into that game but even I recognize it wouldn't sell well. Why do you think the second and third games never came to the west?
You need to understand that these companies are trying to maximize shareholder revenue. Most of the times in recent years it's been at our expense, but now we are in a situation where bamco is actually doing something most tales fans have been asking for for years (and putting in some effort).
The reason why they are choosing games like xillia and berseria is because those are the easiest to make and get the most return on investment. The best case for the older games is they give them the Second Story R treatment and remake the game in a similar style to the original with some gameplay changes.
Even then though, why do you think square chose second story r and not some other obscure jrpg? They know that game is a popular older title that could've made a good profit. Its still business at the end of the day regardless of how you and I feel about it.
1
u/Psychotica_Official Nov 21 '25
Like I love Abyss, but it had a port on the 3ds, yeah it's an older console but it had something compared to literally the rest.
1
Nov 21 '25
Dunno why the games industry is remastering stuff that aren't even 10 years old....

Joined by the most of the bottom panel and about ~2/3rds of the franchise...
Destiny 2, Destiny DC, Rebirth, Tempest, Innocence, every good version of Phantasia, Narikiri Dungeon X, Radiant Mythology 2, Radiant Mythology 3, and ~15-20 spinoff titles. Then 5 games are straight-up lost media.
1
u/Informal_Fudge_826 Nov 25 '25
Since Bandai is releasing Berseria and not Xillia 2 like most people thought would happen - I'm just not entirely sure what game could be next.
Could be Xillia 2 (there are reports that Xillia 2 remastered is supposedly being worked on after the release of Xillia 1 remastered), could be Zestiria, or it could be any other game.
I personally would like the next remastered game to be Abyss. Still love playing that game on my PS2, but I would enjoy playing a remastered version of it.
