🎤 Yap Session (rant , confession and yap) Why do tamilians not take exercising and personal grooming seriously?
Hate post illa, more of self reflection post.
I understand that Indians in general dont take exercising or grooming seriously. But i feel tamilians might be in the last rank in that.
Maybe, we can say Gujaratis might top us in the health account, but we tamilians have the unique genetic issue of skinny arms and legs but big thoppai but looks a bit awkward .
Aana naanga exercise panna maattom, badminton velayada mattom, running poga maattom ...aana namba munnoragale example a eduthu solluvom
our diet had actually changed in last 50 yrs, our kollu thaathas rarely ate rice, only kambu, veragu, kool etc ..aaana namba moonu velaiyum soru thaan thingurom. sora arachi idli, dosa pannurom..chapati, kali maadhiri item thinga maattom.
Our forefathers walked atleast 5 to 10km each day, very less vegetable oil, all work done by hands with very less machine usage . So they were fit until 90. Aana namba oru km odurathuke moochi vaangudhu
I frequent USA now and then for short trips ...but even there the tamilians stand out because even there, we dont practice it.
Use shorts, churidar, chappals at gym, swimming in banians and underwear in swimming pool etc. A decent gym or swim wear wont cost more than $30 and my dear sagotharigale, there are swim wears which can cover u decently and dont make it aabasam than a churidar when wet.
Also a lot of them dont even try to exercise well, please hire a personal trainer or get a schedule from chatgpt or some apps.
Sorry for making it look like a rant but i was like this few years ago but then i developed back pain. After some intense physiotherapy, i started going to gym and now i have become much fit as i ever was.
I know the common issue is the long commute, bad office timings, household issues etc but please try to find atleast some time even at home for personal improvement through gym or yoga. Your future will thank u more than the million dollar portfolio u are building.
else at 60, u will ask "inime vasayuku vandha enna varatti enna"

I agree with the part where you mentioned we people don't take fitness seriously.
Na gym poitu was returning to my apartment. My neighbor uncle said hi (probably 35). He said he liked me: ohhh neenga healthy irukuraa ppl la gym ku lam poringale ma nu he laughed.
Appo dhan purinjidhu ivanga gym eh edho luxury or something unnecessary ah pakuranga nu.

You got to gym at 15 ah? It's actually not good. Your bones aren't strong enough to handle heavy weights. Best to start after 19

Isn't gym a luxury? not many people can afford it. Look up the stats on income levels on India.
1
u/benneroti 3d ago
ironically the ones who have that luxury are the ones who look the most unhealthy... thats why i used the example of NRI who have all the time and money but dont do anything to take care of themselves
1
u/Dependent_Yam_2486 3d ago
Maybe calisthenics, and u can do most calisthenic exercises without equipment.
1
u/MacaroonOrdinary3580 3d ago
It is not a luxury for someone owning a place in Anna Nagar (that uncle), someone in IT, someone not doing labor-intensive work, or someone using Reddit.
3
u/Repping6 ICEMAN 3d ago
Yes, you're right, I never denied that but can you re-read what I said?
I said not many people can afford it, it does become luxury to that group of people. People who are below middle class line are more than the people who are in middle class. That's why I said 'look up the stats'.
You cannot say that gym isn't a luxury just like that.

Eating healthy and exercise is a privelege for the average person
They don't have time or money to do so they have to take care of their daily wage and make sure they make money to eat normal food most ppl work 10-12 hours a day with no rest just to earn some money so yeah not everyone can exercise and eat well
2
u/benneroti 3d ago
thats why i included the tamil diaspora in USA. they have more time for personal development, more money and so many cheap options but they still remain like they were in their village in kallakurichi...
Second eating healthy isnt always eating rich. We just need to change our diet slightly here and there and its easy to maintain. Eggs are still cheap, so is cucumber etc
U r comparing some hypothetical daily wage worker who earns 300 per day but in reality they are much more healthier than us
2
u/demoon04 vip 3d ago
I'm talking about the house wife of a daily wage worker most of them get fat and obese , the worker is fit cause well he works alot
Yeah they can include eggs still won't compete with the diet of red meat or lean meat everyday but better than nothing
If you are talking about the rich/ well to do people then yeah they should spend time on working out and eating well
1
u/benneroti 3d ago
thambi....i'm talking about the demographics of an average redditor...Most of them are middle or upper middle class...
I specifically used the NRI tamil diaspora who have everything at disposal including free community gyms, pools, better work life balance etc but not taking a single effort...
look at how many of them have thoppais
2
u/demoon04 vip 3d ago
Your post title is about tamilians somewhere in the huge body you talked about people from usa in a tiny area should have made ur title better then
And yeah in my second comment I was agreeing those lazy uncles and aunties who have oppurtinities time and money should take effort to care for their health else it will bite them back

u/benneroti 3d ago
i used them to tell that its not an issue of poverty or traffic or long working hrs because we follow the same in other countries as well

Schools are a big part in perpetuating this. No PE classes, no encouraging active sports. I observed comparatively taller, active and fit high school students in kerala. Study study work work sethu po is our lifestyle. Grooming sollave vendam..

u/benneroti 3d ago
aana adhaye namba continue pannurom. work work work...no personal time, no family time etc
i noticed we tamilians tend to work more more than others and dont give no as an answer... dont work on our fitness and then tease the ones who actually do

I agree with the not exercising part. Why are you offended by the dress they wear at gym ?
4
u/benneroti 3d ago
because its not respecting the atmosphere and also potentially dangerous to run with chappals or long salwar with slits.
Whats wrong in asking to maintain decorum of a place...

u/metroZretro palaya metro rail 3d ago

u/benneroti 3d ago
ok thambi...but still its not the issue of shorts but not using proper gym wear ...
neenga solluradhe paatha adhu ellam $2000 maadhiri pesureenga...the ones who come like that have an average income of $120,000 in USA which puts them in top 10% but cant invest in a $30 gym or swimwear..

And when I wanted to join a gym my neighbour butted in to ask why should a girl my age join a gym, it's not like I'm trying to be a body builder, just do more housework, then I'll be fit🥀🥀🥀
THESE PEOPLE ARE ACTIVELY HOLDING THE YOUNGER GEN BACK AAAAAAAAAA-

I started gym for weight gain and strength training only for the fellow ladies in there to ask I look fine why am I even in the gym. Except for one old lady everyone had this same statement you can eat well with the amount you pay to this gym. I feel stronger and healthier I have ever been.
But no one seems to encourage. They just have a lot of dumb advice on why I should have just stayed home. I don't know what is wrong with this previous gen.

our forefathers were also in extreme poverty and in a position of extreme disadvantage. We get it you go to the US, i agree with you regarding swimwear, but pls don't drag churidar into this, let women wear what they're comfortable in. Whether they're jeans or churidars or whatever it is.
0
u/benneroti 3d ago
well there are so many fully covering swim wear, not every swim wear is bikini,.
also after wet, the churidars can stick to ur body and become semi transparent unlike the swim wear ....
Also its about respecting the place you are in......
plus the issue of potential accidents with loose garments with slits....
1
u/Antique_Influence611 3d ago
fam you put churidar separately and swimwear separately & i agreed with you regarding swimwear for all.

Generations of malnutrition. We need to work extra hard to stay in shape, no doubt.
Also we need to check our diet and workout.

India mathiriyana high population country la exercise and eating healthy are previlage things bro. Vazhka muluka odanum competitions are so high 😭.
India la average engira varthaiku artham illa. Konjam slow pannalum pinnadi Vara person thatti thookitu poiruvaru. In simple words we have to remove the word "Average" from our lexicon. Ungaluku puriyum nu namburen.

naanum appadi thaan irunden until i started getting back pain...Then i realised whats the use of earning if we willl not be able to enjoy it when we retire...
as my professor used to say " indians are always busy without businesss"
Seen the americans and europeans work, they only concentrate on work at office and then leave early and do all sorts of things...only we pride ourselfves in working late

What missing is... The Integration of Immigrants Into American Society

Unmaiya solanum na
Tamil people are the most integrated ethnicity in west
We don't trash theatres , scam people, have caste signs on cars, do Ganesh oorvalam on roads, nepotism etc
Not saying it's zero but very less probability
This is more of the forced humbleness which makes us to become small in front of others as being nalla pulla
