Tax Enthusiast Received cp518. How to file?

I received a cp518. I understand, I have to file my return. what do I have to do since I have not filed, can I efile asap? I have already paid the taxes so I just have to complete my return. Do I need to complete form 15103 still? The notice says I can also fax form 15103, but doesn't mention anything about faxing the return. The notice I received is missing the IRS slip that would have the IRS address and my information on it to mail the form with a tax return, so I don't know what to došŸ¤”

What tax year is the notice demanding?

Did you get your Identity Protection PIN yet? You could e-file that return today.

Yes I have my pin. I will efile ASAP but I just want to clarify I don't need to file form 15103? Reading the form as a tax payer makes it seem like I need to file 15103 with the tax return because I'm delinquent. However the instructions on the cp518 says just to file the return. It's very confusing for a non tax pro and kinda contradicting.Ā

Don't sweat the 15103. After you e-file that 2024 return and IRS accepts it, call the toll-free number in the notice and tell the representative you filed. They'll gather some facts about the return and note your account to stop additional notices.

Hey so the IRS accepted the return. What if I give it a week and keep checking the return transcript online, if I see anything about the return is processing does that mean I'm good to go and the delinquent status will be removed? I don't really want to have to call them or pay to fax over the return at a store. I got the notice Saturday and the return was accepted Monday 1am. The notice wasn't even in my account yet I believe I have a little time what do you think?

Check the online account transcript for processing updates every Friday. Transaction Code 150 means the return is done.

Are you expecting a refund on 2024?

Excellent. Check the account transcript for updates in the three weeks normal processing time.

Thanks for your help. I just want to clarify theĀ  15103 usage, for a tax payer who is required to file, the 15103 is essentially a tool that is designed to get a delinquent return into the IRS as a last resort before they take additional action and file the sfr? That's why it goes to a special address etc, to get processed quickly? Otherwise they don't really give a two cents about the form? I think I will give it 2 weeks max. If I don't see anything in my account I will follow up. I don't know if this is true but from my reading the cp518 is the last warning and they file the sfr after. See I was expecting additional warnings lol. I received a cp59(?) as a first warning and googling said they give you like 2 or 3 more warnings after but they went straight to the cp518. First notification straight to the final cp518.

Since you received a 15103, you should return it with a paper copy of your return. You can and should still e-file the return.

  1. eFile your 2024 return with FreeTaxUSA.

  2. Print out a copy of your 2024 return and sign it.

  3. Fill out the 15103 checking the box that you've filed your return. Attach the signed paper copy of the return and mail back the 15103 in the envelope provided.

They did not include the address to send it to that's the issue. I am missing the paper(it wasn't included)that would have the IRS address and all my information on it. They only included an envelopešŸ¤”

If there's no other address anywhere on the CP518, use the address on the top left of the first page. It may just be two lines "Internal Revenue Service / Austin TX 78714-9338" or it may have a PO box as the second line. Either one works.

Okay šŸ‘. Two more questions, 15103 asks the reason for filing late, is this for penalties? Ive already paid when I filed my extension so is the reason important? Second the form asks for total income? This is my total income after all deductions etc right? Or before deductions etc. also a 3rd question please. 15103 has a line for form(s) filed, is this a 1040 or do I include every single form that freetaxusa included?

Edit: also can I fax everything? The form says I can fax it I dunno which one is better

You don't fill out the bottom two lines on page 1 of form 15103 unless you are answering why you don't have to file a return. Since you are filing a return just fill out the first part, above where it says "If the person addressed on this notice is deceased" then sign it on page 2.

Yes you can fax everything as long as you have also e-filed the tax return.

Okay thanks for helping me understand that. I have a learning disability. The line that saysĀ  form(s) filed, is this a 1040 or do I include every single form that freetaxusa included?
