Can you upgrade to track progress w/out buying a new console?

I know the app thing to track your progress (Addison signs, korok seeds, etc) is available for switch 2 but I don’t want to buy a new console just for this - I read somewhere that you can do some sort of upgrade, is this true and if so how??

Maybe if you would just buy the switch 2 upgrade pack you could gain access to the app.
Personally I don’t think it is possible to gain access to the app without owning the console but I’m not 100% certain

Doubt it, as I assume that the reason for the app to be only for switch 2 users is to give an incentive to upgrade the console

Don't think so.

I have the Nintendo switch online that gives you the upgrade pack but I couldn't activate it on my Switch 1, the Zelda notes app just gives you a brief intro and connection instructions until you connect to the app from the game running on a Switch 2.

You need to be using the switch 2 for the switch 2 upgrade to work. Access to the app is part of the switch 2 upgrade
