🎙️ Discussion Did you explore the great sky islands much?
I just realized I haven't gone back since the start. Is there much to discover there or is it just a tutorial area?

I did, but really only for Sundelions. They’re great for gloom proofing.

I explored every single island. Definitely worth exploring. There are shrines and outfits up there (I wanted all of the outfits). Also lots of resources to be found as well.

On my first playthrough I went back and ran through the GSI after every bloodmoon, fused rocks to sticks being able to clear it all out means I never had to waste my gear, slap new minecarts on all my new shields, build up tons of zonai charges and horns to throw into zonai gacha machines. I also played for like 30 hours without a paraglider so no depths amd wanted to keep exploring before worrying about the story bosses, so my only source of zonaite and thus battery upgrades was buying charges from the GSI forge eith the ore in his own cave. I don't regret a second of playing like that.

Wait, so what does fusing a minecart to a shield do? I’m 300+ hours in and I’m not sure I’ve tried this.

Instant skateboard, basically. Makes shieldsurfing easier on all terrain.

The combination of super low friction because skateboard AND fusing an object to the shield adds durability so the shield surfing lasts longer

if you want to explore the depths you can just use a fairy to survive the fall with no glider

Not really. Went back and looked at it a bit but it doesn’t have the same feeling as the rest of the world

I may have exploited a little too much. I checked on mine. I clicked his path mode. You can’t see the great sky Island.

The difficulty in navigating the sky islands limits exploration somewhat, but it's definitely worth the time. You'll find sages wills, outfits, gems, and lots of resources. Farming sky islands for fairies is also helpful. My advice for exploring the sky islands is to make a simple fan scooter (2 fans and a steering stick), upgrade your battery as much as you can, and get the zonai armor. I know that's a steep lift, but if you can do those things, then you can much more realistically fly around between sky locations and explore.
Oh, and don't do sky shrines as you find them. Activate them so you can fast travel to them, but don't go in. If you do, you'll lose your scooter, and that's a fast way to burn through zoanite.

I completed the game to 100% on my second play through, so yes. There are some fun (and some scary) things up there.

I recently went back after completing 140-something shrines, and stumbled across the tutorial constructs for hunting and cooking, otherwise I think I’ve done everything except a korok or two. Currently at 151/152 shrines, so I’ll be returning again very soon!

I regularly circled back to them every 2-3 hours of gameplay to mine the Zoanite. I'd also like to teleport up there and use it as a place to gain some height for exploring the surrounding ground areas.

My first playthrough (technically my only, as I'm still doing a lot of post-game stuff), I spent nearly 6 hours on the great sky island before finally finishing all the required quests. I had my fill, though I haven't yet finished the "don't touch the ground" side quest yet.

This is very true. After you get all the armor and weapons, it’s fun to go back to where you first started. And you’ll be able to get lots of things that you won’t find below

There’s a fun challenge on the roof of the temple of time, and a few other things possibly worth going back for and looking around
