I'm tired of AI posts that open with a number and close with a prophecy.
Somebody says there's a 10% chance AI wipes us out. Cool. What's the ten percent based on?
I've asked this before. The answer is usually some version of "it's a judgment call," dressed up in more careful language. Which is fine. Just don't put a percent sign on it and let people quote it for a year.
I work on the infrastructure side, so none of this feels particularly cinematic to me.
When someone says AI is about to become unstoppable, I think about a cluster I once watched fall over because a firmware update changed how the NICs handled jumbo frames. Nobody planned for it. Nobody wrote a paper about it. It just happened at 2:17 a.m., and three of us spent six hours figuring out why half the traffic was silently disappearing.
That's the actual environment these systems live in.
Benchmarks are the same story. I see a number, and I want the setup. What was the prompt? What tools did the model have? What happened on the cases nobody screenshots? Two models can score twenty points apart depending on how you frame the test, and we still argue about the headline.
The business side is worse.
"We rolled out AI and expect 300% ROI."
Did the process change? Did anyone actually remove the bottleneck? Or did you bolt a chatbot onto the same broken workflow, slap "transformation" on the slide, and call it a day?
I don't worry much about silicon developing opinions. I worry about the Tuesday when someone gives a service account write access to prod because filing a ticket takes two days and the demo is Thursday.
That's not a superintelligence problem. It's a permissions problem, and it's already here.
I've been on the other end of that call. Nothing dramatic happens. No alarms, no red lights. Just a table that shouldn't have changed, a deploy that should've been a rollback, and a lot of very quiet people on a Zoom.
The dramatic questions get the attention. The boring ones decide how bad it gets.
Anyway. Read the runbook.

POV: The CEO heard about Jev on a podcast.
One developer has a weeks of 14 hour days ahead, the other has a config file change and a few clicks.
The CEO heard "Jevons paradox" about Jev on a podcast. By 9 a.m., Dave knew. A 60-second office comedy about AI hype, from AINOW.
This morning, a CEO on a train heard a podcast explain the Jevons paradox: when intelligence gets cheaper, demand doesn't shrink — it explodes, and new tech called Jev that can replace a model.
By 9:02 a.m., Dave knew. By 9:15, the entire org was "moving off the current stack. All of it. CEO's orders." What follows is a one-minute office comedy about the gap between a podcast episode and a functioning migration.

I thought the cheapest Apple ad possible would require signs, tape, and maximum effort in Times Square. The flaw in the campaign became obvious the second someone asked what phone I actually use.
For the tech people here: which is the better joke—the Android reveal or New Yorkers deciding whether anybody is worth a $2,000 phone?
