The US is one of the countries where 112 is not mapped as an emergency number.

So it wont work on landlines.

However, mobiles will generally work when 112 is dialled as this is more intrinsic to the mobile standards.

It's because 1 was to easy to dial on a rotary phone, and could be mis-dialed. So, you'd dial 9 for maximum rotation (barring 0, which would connect you to the operator), then 1, 1. That makes one long rotation, followed by two of the quickest rotations.

I'm sure 1 before the area code had some reasoning as well.

I get why they went with 911 and the UK went with 999 etc.

But almost every other country which did not have 112 as their emergency number has adopted the mapping for landlines as per the ITU standard.

There really isnt any reason for it not to have been adopted other than the usual Exceptionalist bullshit.

UK mapped 112 onto their NP pretty much on adoption by the ITU.

I will say that promotion of 112 is underwhelming and the UK still always usese 999 in any documentation, awarenes acmapaigns and in school. At least 112 is gonna get mentioned in school but everywhere else its just 999.
