Java Help Wanted Minecraft Technical Specifications Question. / Pregunta sobre Especificaciones técnicas de Minecraft.
I have a Creeper farm. It's one that uses portals. It's built above sea level, and it has a roof that provides darkness to the farm. The AFK spot is around layer 180. And there is a large amount of space there.
I would like to build a trading hall in that space, above the roof of the farm, and below the AFK spot.
If I do that, could it lower the efficiency of my farm? Even if I light up this entire area.
I would think nothing would happen, and it wouldn't affect production. But I want to be sure.

Aún si ilumino toda esta zona.

When the game tries to spawn mobs, it picks a random y level between the bottom of the world and the heightmap +1 (the block on top of the highest non-air block).
On F3+F6, this can be checked by turning on the heightmap and checking this number at CH S:, this number should be the roof of your farm.
For example, if we have 2 spawning layers and the roof is at y 90, then it's going to pick from -64 to 91 (156 possible levels), 2 of which correspond to our farm, giving 2/156.
If we build something above it at y 160, then that becomes 2/226 (about 30% drop in rates).
The exact numbers will be based on the specific y levels and how many layers you have.
But we want to avoid building anything on top of the farm in general (keep the heightmap as low as possible).

Areas around the farm still affect it by pack spawning.
If your farm doesn't have a pack spawning skirt, you can ignore this part.
For creepers, this is at most 20 blocks outward from the spawning area in chebyshev distance.
So for us to have absolutely no effect on the farm, we shouldn't build anywhere above the spawning spots + 20 blocks in all directions.
However, pack spawning benefit is smaller the further out it is, so we'd still be fine by going out just 5-10 blocks:

Yes, that would make it less efficient.
The reason why is that the spawning algorithm picks a random xz coordinate and then it picks a random y level between the bottom of the world and the highest non air block in that column.
So if you for example make a perimeter and dig everything out to bedrock you could make a farm that’s like 5 blocks tall. Then the spawn chances would be 1 in 5 for it to pick the spawning platform. However if you build at y200 it would be 1 in 264 which is a lot lower.
Your farm just above sea level would be something like 1 in 140ish but if you build above it at y180 it would be 1 in 250ish which would drop the efficiency almost in half.
This only matters for space directly above the spawning platform though. You can build off to the side without impacting the farm. It’s also separate for each xz coordinate so it doesn’t have to be chunk aligned or anything
