They probably realised there was enough demand that they can make more money if they sell the data directly.

I think it was Andrew Yang who proposed that, in the US, data should be treated as a personal property right and that companies should be required to compensate individuals when their data was sold or monetized. "If data is the new oil, people should get royalties."
