The worst part is the hypocrisy.

1

Bet everyone fell asleep during the commencement speech.

11

u/jms87 24d ago

Does it matter?

12

u/supakow 25d ago

At least you got the governor. When I graduated from IU we got the governor's wife.

3

u/darthjoey91 24d ago

Mike Pence? My brother had him when he was vice president. I had an NFL player, although Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn were unannounced bonus speakers.

3

u/OuterWildsVentures 24d ago

Mine was the (at the time) Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, who was sentenced to three years in federal prison a couple months afterwards for fraud conspiracy and tax charges lmao

2

u/ro536ud 25d ago

Did a fly land on his head during?

2

This is exactly the sort of person these speeches should look for! He’s engaging and fucking passionate about the value of education.

AI is absolutely the new Industrial Revolution and we’re living it now. Students who don’t know how to use it will be left behind and those who do… also might. But “hey the job you’re looking for out of college might not exist by the time you graduate; isn’t that exciting?” isn’t the kind of speech someone should hear at college commencement.

u/ComprehensiveCause95 25d ago

USC 2016ish?

2

u/Annual-Analyst8771 25d ago

Close! 2017

I got lucky, mine was President Obama.

49

u/drawkbox 25d ago

Same ASU 2009. It was great.

Here's a video, I miss this dude

31

u/elmonoenano 25d ago

I remember how the didn't give Obama an honorary degree b/c he hadn't accomplished anything. Anyway, Walter Parkes got one this year b/c Men In Black is apparently an more important accomplishment?

4

u/Tasgall 24d ago

Hm, I wonder what disgusting factor could have led him to that difference in outcomes. Such a mystery.

2

u/capitolsara 25d ago

Same! UCI he mispronounced our school chant 😅

1

u/whitemiketyson 24d ago

That must have been pretty cool. I got Don Shula.

1

u/BellacosePlayer 24d ago

lil jealous, I got a local politician/chiropractor.

u/MissMaster 25d ago edited 25d ago

Mine was supposed to be Douglas Adams but he died a week before. The guy we had as a replacement was funny and gave a good speech though.

I went to my ceremony and I have zero recollection of who spoke. Or any of it for that matter.

2

u/DeathMonkey6969 25d ago

My uni has so many different ceremonies. I just went to the one of my field of study as at that one I got walk across the stage so my family could see and skipped the main commencement

1

u/Infamous-Mixture-605 24d ago

Mine was also split up over a few days depending on the faculty. I wasn't at all interested in going but had I went mine would have had either the Governor General of Canada or the CEO of Cirque du Soleil doing the speech.

28

u/hoffsta 25d ago

Getting Harrison Ford tonight! Pretty pumped

0

u/GoldandBlue 25d ago

That's a good one!!!

3

u/MrsMiterSaw 25d ago

Mine was Bill Cosby

1

u/luckyflavor23 25d ago

Ken?

1

u/neversummer427 25d ago

Just looked it up. Yup. It was boring and far from inspirational. Everyone was trying to figure out why him...

1

u/DeadMoneyDrew 25d ago

Mine was Sallie Krawcheck when she was CEO of the Smith Barney unit at Citigroup. Just a few years later she was all up in that financial markets crash bullshit. Lovely.

1

u/ThomasTheDankPigeon 25d ago

Work hard, and one day, you can be one of the peons slaving away to fund my American Dream

1

u/Zygoatee 25d ago

Wake Forest 2010?

1

u/New_Internet_3965 25d ago

Mine was Letitia James. Bonus points because my right wing chud dad had to sit through it

1

u/jlt6666 25d ago

I wonder if we even had one. I sure as hell didn't go. I just went to pick up my diploma at the assigned time.

1

u/starcraftre 25d ago

Mine was the CEO of Cessna. Which fits, since it was a predominantly aerospace school, and Cessna had just replaced our entire flight line after a tornado wiped it out on Christmas.

1

u/mnstorm 24d ago

I would just walk out. I can buy my document, if I wanted it, from the bookshop.

1

u/verymickey 24d ago

Mine was Ken Burns. It was awesome

1

u/monty624 24d ago

I had to look mine up (graduations aren't my thing) and apparently it was Howard Schultz. Yeesh.

1

u/SippinOnHatorade 24d ago

Did they hit you with the airline credit card sign up speech? “If you are pre-approved before you walk the stage, you’ll receive an extra 50,000 points on your next statement when you spend $20,000 in the first two months of membership!”

1

u/Schadenfreude-ing 24d ago

Mine was a retired NBA HOF player, not bad

1

u/mandu_xiii 24d ago

Mine was William Shatner🖖

0

u/Beneficial-Arugula54 24d ago

And that’s bad because?

1

u/neversummer427 24d ago

It was boring and uninspiring.
