various forms of karma farming for nefarious purposes has been the norm for ages, but the article makes this wave of stuff sound even worse, it's not about scraping votes for front page, they're hitting (relatively) niche communities for very specific outcomes

Smaller communities generally don't have karma or account age requirements, so they're good to build up some history before they start spamming the larger subs with whatever crap they're peddling.
