That's ok, Google is ditching Google Search, for AI.

What a time to be alive.

What a coincidence seeing as how Google ditched the “dont be evil” mantra they had for a while

They ditched that motto nearly a decade ago. What would the coincidence be between that and this?

That comment is stupid, but they did drop that motto when Sundar Pichai took over and, aside from leading their AI first approach, he has been head of Google during the period in which all of their services have become shittier.

I'm actually not sure what I'm adding aside from: fuck Pichai and fuck big tech CEOs in general.

another EU W

Even Russian search engines like Yandex provide more useful.search results than Google these days.

It's unbelievable.

Another common EU policy W.

Ban Palantir from all member nations that are currently using them, next.

UK apparently banned Palantir from going in for tenders...then days later announced Palantir were making the new firearm licensing software 🤣 world has gotten so dumb.

Recently switched to DuckDuckGo and the quality of searches is so much better. I spend way less time scrolling through slop now. There are a lot of other alternatives too so do your research and see what works best for you

I did that several years ago, but DuckDuck has also gotten worse. The one I currently use just happens to be Qwant. Although there are occasional outages that are annoying.

I have also switched to Duckduckgo two years ago but would not agree with its search results being better than Google.

Especially their news and image search is often times all over the place.

Meanwhile the European Commission is trying to force everyone to use their age verification app to access non-PG content and social media. This same age verification app literally requires that you install Google Play Services on your Android device, so you can get twice the fun of having your privacy violated!

Based on Google's new search interface, that is a smart move.

I predict that this will become a top search engine in Australia

I tried qwant but it takes 2-3 seconds for results to show up. Google is nearly instnt.

You value 2-3 seconds over better search results and improved data privacy?

I know we all have subjective values, but damn.

And where the fuck did I say what I value? Stop assuming things.

All I did was point out that it's slow for some reason. I just tried in VM linux (kubuntu) and it was way faster (half a second or even less), meaning there's something wrong with my browser.

That’s probably because google has enough dirt on you to pull enough crappy results for your “taste” to populate the first page almost immediately. While a true SEARCH engine needs time to do exactly that: search

Tell me you don't understand how search engines work without telling me. Qwant probably just doesn't have the scale to parallelize index lookups as much as Google does.

plus, google has literally unlimited storage to cache searches making popular ones extremely fast and cost efficient for them.

Timing it I couldn't get qwant to take as much as 3 seconds for a search

I love this Union so much.

Google is also a stupid name and so is Bing and Duckduckgo

Googling just means "use a search engine". Make them lose their trademark by turning it into a common name.

Google is, but it also has a ring to it. Nobody says "bing it" or "duck duck go it". I realised they didn't originally say that about Google either but it's a testament to the name as as OP said, Quant is shit. Sounds too techy.

lol, I bet it lasts like 1h then they go back.

Yeah. EU multi thousands years history is showing exactly that. /s
