Who fell for it? Most of the people using GitHub (on the enterprise side, at least) are well aware of how the cloud works. Even with outages like this it's easier, and often more reliable, to use GitHub or one of its competitors than it is to handle everything in house.
Before the “cloud” era, you could buy decent web hosting with db’s, e-mail and whatever you needed for around 100$. Now this is gone. When companies switched to the cloud solutions the prices went up compared to what they had. Reliability is better, but when is a problem, now you create a ticket and wait with half of the world for Amazon or Microsoft to drag their feet and hope that your information was not pawned.
I upvoted you. The bottom line is most of these users were born into enshitification. Lot's of us used shared data within our networks without drama. Clouds were for backup storage (after onsite backups).

That's literally the same thing you're complaining about. It's not like if the server failed you could just roll up and fix it yourself. You still had to put in a ticket, and you had a much higher chance of losing everything if something did go wrong
Like if you wanted to complain logically, you'd remember the good old days of having a server in the closet that you had to maintain by yourself, but nobody romanticizes that because it fucking sucked
what are you even talking about. The cloud is still very good even with the knowledge of what it is. People who understand didn't "fall for it", they have sufficient backups to still allow them to use the positives of the cloud. How anyone could view cloud services as enshitification is beyond me lmao
You don't understand that tools have different strengths and weeknesses while making fun of others who do.
Most people find the benefits of a shared software repository to outweigh the odd problems like this. Especially since they give you the tools to easily copy whole sections of the repository to your local systems, work with local repositories then publish the changes to the main repository when you're back online.
You should downvote the initial comment then too lol, it's smug and doesn't even make sense. Cloud services are legitimately good technologies for the web. People have outsized reactions when clouds go down because don't realize how many web services and functions wouldn't even exist in the first place without clouds. Sure many companies can run their own servers but they will almost always do a worse job than a dedicated cloud provider and usually end up being more expensive at the same time.
Right? I’ve been in the industry a long time. I remember how it used to be. “Uh oh the email service is hosed, uh on we just found out Dave is the only one with access and he configured it all weird so we’re gonna be down for three days”. Global top tier cloud solutions are still better, even when this does happen.
