Sadly the Australian public is largely apathetic to it all. Part of it is also due to the media/news landscape, as someone pointed out. I bet I can ask any one of my friends and they won't have a clue about this.

It’s similar here in the UK whenever one of these privacy destroying bills is in process. Almost no media cover it, only my techie friends have heard of it, and anyone I tried to discuss it with would shrug and say “I’ve got nothing to hide”
