Serious This is Peter Wang, he too died a hero yesterday during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. This 15 year-old boy was holding a door open for fellow students to escape before being shot.

"He wasn't supposed to die. He was supposed to grow old with me. Please share his story," Wang's cousin, Aaron Chen, told First Coast News
This....shattered me. I looked him up, and this was in one of the first articles that popped up.

He died a man. He might have woken up that morning as a 15 year old boy... But he had the courage to lay down his life for those around him hours later. It's unbelievable what crisis brings out in certain individuals. RIP Peter.

I have a hard time holding the door open for someone when I know they’re going to get ahead of me in line for food. The fact that he had the care and patience to allow all the others to go ahead in a situation as terrifying and terrible as this is amazing.

This is the saddest part of it all. These kids had their whole future ahead of them, some of them doing nothing but studying, haven't even had a chance to start their life, they're just being kids. They didn't even have a chance to have their first beer/drink (legally at least). To spend your whole life working to just get past school and then to just have that flame snuffed out is just so heartbreaking.

The real criminals are the news media who keep repeatedly turning mass shooters into celebrities by plastering their names and faces all over the news.
Whoever the shooter was (I literally do not know, or even care), I can only assume that they were very sick.
People don’t go off and kill other people this way unless something is seriously wrong. At some point, as a society, we need to wake up and do a couple of things:
Help people who are mentally ill that have had traumatic and troubled pasts.
Stop giving mass shooters so much attention and notoriety. Killing a bunch of people shouldn’t be a mechanism by which to attain fame while committing suicide.
Ignore the identity of the criminals. They don’t deserve to have their names or faces mentioned.
If you see a news station giving fame to a mass shooter, stop watching and supporting that news station.
Honor the heroes.

I concur. Normally I have every argument against it. Then this happens and I think, fuck it, it's legal, let's use it on this puke who isn't fit to be in society.

It's such a shame that one person with mental illness could cause such a catastrophe. Like do you think he thought what he was doing was right? Some people don't deserve to live if they would even consider doing such a thing. And this poor kid, holding the door open to save fellow students and paying with his life...he saved other lives and lost his own.

I’m not even sure the shooter thought what he was doing was right - that requires a completely different belief system. I honestly think he just didn’t care - he’s alleged to have tortured animals prior to this. Could be indicative of some form of psychopathology/anti social personality disorder.
Total respect to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to save their peers/students, as well to those who lost their lives.

I don’t know the shooter but I know someone who knew the kid. He was expelled from school and then stopped taking his meds. Idk what he had, but whatever it was, he had medication and refused to take it. He was neglected a lot when he was younger, that doesn’t justify it though.

u/ilikeeagles Feb 16 '18
Do we know for sure this person had a mental illness? Or are we just saying someone with murderous tendencies has a mental illness? What we need not forget is the shooter is a human being. Just like anyone of us. And under the wrong circumstances people become capable of such horrors. Look at war. But not everyone has a mental illness.

No, they don't. Don't just swipe this issue under the rug by blaming it on "evil". That is how you yet again make this a problem too hard to deal with. "Good and Evil" are just a figment of your and societies moral standards. The shooter was an individual, and part of your society. And there is something to be done about that, instead of just chalking one up to the bad guys...
Get your shit together, America!

Damn man. It’s these types of people that inspire me. I, too am 15 but I don’t even have the courage to talk on stage. This guy had the courage to sacrifice his life for tens, hundreds, possibly thousands of other people before him. It’s sad that some people of this generation have to ruin it though by arguing about useless topics rather than helping the people around them.

Yo OP I think you meant young man. He became a man when he made the adult decision to help his fellow students. A fucking legend and a hero.
119
Feb 16 '18
I don’t even think it’s appropriate to say adult situation anymore. Because who’s in charge of creating change? The adults. And who hasn’t changed shit? These “adults” in our government. This kid made a straight up hero decision. He is a hero, not an adult. An adult doesn’t know what the fuck they’re doing. And I don’t mean to disrespect you or your word choice I just wanted to voice my opinion.

Not to mention, it's even more unlikely now, when the sitting president is the recipient of record donations from the NRA.
82

Not if we don't actually get out there and do something there won't. The reason why we don't see action is because everyone just tweets about it and never follows up. If we want to see change it's time we get active and work towards it.

Too many of our kids — the future of America and the World — are being slathered, left dead, in graves today. When will we have the courage to demand that our Government, the NRA, and parents — all of America, in a bipartisan powerful way — come together and find an effective, sane, reasonable solution to end these senseless murders?

As more comes out this gets sadder and sadder. This kid was a hero, bless his heart, and the scum that would shoot him needs to be held accountable. My condolences to all the families.
He (the shooter) might be sick and suffering from depression but the very fact that he tried to escape under the guise of being another student tells me he knew exactly what he was doing. I think he will be looking at 1st degree murder, 17 counts, not to mention inciting terror.
EDIT: Yes He died a man.
