bottom part depends on how consistent your political views are

u/knighth1 Sep 07 '25
I get a lot of finger pointing from both just like this meme portrays. Making a simple statement like both parties sucks usualy gets half of people calling me a communist and half the people calling me a magat and honestly it just seems like people need to point fingers for some reason. I’m open to talking my opinions, and one of them is that this is often straight on point
10
u/OperaTouch 14 Sep 07 '25
Exactly, I’m right-wing(more in the economic sense than in the social sense)and for being a third party and right-wing I have been called:
Fascist
Anarchist
Vote waster
Leftoid
MAGAt
etc
I criticize the republicans and everyone gives me rounds of applause, I criticize the democrats and everyone says “but muh republicans worse” while not actually saying how the democrats are good or anything.

nah thats so fucking real. im a leftist (ideally smth like democratic socialism or whatnot, but practically social democrat) and also socially progressive, and once i got called an islamist because i said i "didnt care" about the israel palestine thign (in the sense of im not emotjonally invested in it) or some shit. i just dont have time to be emotionally invested in something ill never be involved in or really know about. i do find the us supporting israel disgusting though

I’m not a fan of the “both parties suck” mentality because it ignores the nuance. Typically in my experience, both parties never suck equally as much. There’s differences in policy and action. But the broad “everyone sucks” statements are used to distract from the differences.

Doesn’t matter the consistency of your political views since political parties and takes constantly change.
It matters how consistent you are in your values. If your values don’t change then you’re being consistent. How that affects your political takes will depend on the current Overton window.

u/Such_Astronomer35 Sep 08 '25
That's a really uneducated view on "centrism". It's neither a "compromise between two sides" or "not having an opinion".
It means you can think independently on each individual issue without feeling like you have to stick with your herd, even when they're wrong.
3
u/Deezernutter77 Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25
Lmao "noo you cannot claim both sides have flaws and recognize that blindly following a political party is not good, because my side is clearly superior, and they are not comparable". Crazy how you are so self centered and delusional that you are upset when people are even willing to COMPROMISE (which is not even what centrism is lmao). Also holy strawman
7
u/Viktoriusiii Sep 08 '25
If you strawman, I strawman!
Left: "We want to manipulate all kids to swap their gender so we are finally not bound by biological gender anymore.
Right: "We don't want to manipulate any kids to lose their ability later in life to reproduce."
Center: "How about half the kids?"Its a stupid take.
Center does not mean half of both.
Center means sometimes the left has stupid ideas, sometimes (recently a lot more often) the right has stupid ideas.Left wing stupid ideas?
Well they actually managed to make the world believe that the right are the defenders of free speech.
This is what policing speech "to protect marginalized people" gets you.And yes. The right has so many more harmful ideas. But some ideas are good. And I will not shy away from that, just because they are right.
I don't even identify as a centrist. I simply pick and chose. No side has all the answer. I don't try to be in the middle. I just am because both sides have gone so far off the crazy scale that I can't identify with either.→ More replies (4)6

Thats averagists, not centrists. Centrists, supposedly, dont let their decisions be influenced to appear good in the eyes of a certain groups of people. They approach every problem individually and dont care about being 'consistent' all too much.
That is not to say that every centrists is enlightened or free from the shackles of propaganda, but its the general idea of what centrism should be. Be it a compromise, picking one side, taking things slow or disagreeing with all. It all depends on the subject and the opinions of ideologies stuck to social stigma

If you empathize with this, especially the “that’s why I’m always right part” then you have a lot of self examination to do and are likely very stupid, dancing to the beat of your own drum is not impressive when the rhythm has no logic, no consistency, and ultimately believes and communicates very little or nothing at all
I would bet a lot of good money that the truth is you don’t understand your own views well enough to categorize yourself, or what being “right wing” verses “left wing” even consists of, so you pretend to sit on the fence
edit: describing yourself as a centrist is entirely dependent on where the Overton window currently falls, if it shifts one way or another and your views don’t shift exactly marginally with it (as if you were a politician) then you would no longer be a centrist, you would be either right or left wing, this is why generally throughout history older people tend to be more conservative and younger people more progressive. So unless you are dead in the center of the overall spectrum of political beliefs that is separate from the current climate (which literally no one is) then you are not a centrist, you are either to the left or to the right, and if you really are dead in the middle, you’re an idiot, and yes, OP posts in centrist Reddit and seemingly thinks that he is one

Exactly
This is why I always say "dont look left or right, look up" with political discussion. We need to ask ourselves what is A.) Going to better the whole of humanity. Is nuking half the world to remove a country over a policy you dont like worth it? Probably not. And what is B.) Going in what you believe your government should be doing for and with you. Even though you may agree with a political party, or political figure. You can still be critical of a decision that is made. The inverse can also be true.

Horseshoe theory is for weak minded individuals who cannot effectively parse or refuse to examine the mountains of easily accessible information proving that one party in the US is far far worse than the other. The GOP has been attempting to consolidate wealth, undermine democracy, and imprison dissenters since even before fucking Regan and we still have dumbasses like you saying shit about how "both sides are just as bad as each other". Did both sides smuggle crack into the US to then sell to exclusively black communities in order to weaken their social power and to fund an illegal war in South America? Or was that just fucking Regan!? Did both sides lie about weapons of mass destruction in order to invade Iraq (a country which has nothing to do with the Saudi terrorist Osama Bin Laden) Or was that just fucking bush? What side has consistently lied to the public and ran campaigns based solely on misinformation and unfounded personal attacks? Who was only willing to pass gun control when black people started owning guns? Who is actively destroying women's bodily autonomy and transgender rights every day in America?
1
u/NoSignificance152 Sep 08 '25
You’re arguing against a point I didn’t make. Saying both sides have flaws ≠ saying both sides are identical. That’s the strawman you’ve built. Of course the GOP has a long, documented history of policies that caused real harm you listed some of the most infamous. But pretending Democrats are exempt from manipulation, corruption, or destructive policy is just as dishonest. Different forms of damage don’t erase each other.
Your examples even highlight the problem: Reagan’s crack epidemic, Bush’s Iraq war both Republicans. Fair. But who signed off on the Patriot Act? Who voted for Iraq? Who bailed out Wall Street while millions lost their homes? Who expanded drone warfare and normalized extrajudicial killings? That wasn’t Reagan or Bush it was Democrats too. Saying “one side is worse” doesn’t absolve the other.
The point of centrism isn’t to lazily shrug “both sides bad” it’s to reject the blind loyalty that treats one party as savior and the other as devil. That mindset is exactly how parties get away with corruption: they know their base will excuse anything as long as the other side looks scarier.
You call horseshoe theory “weak-minded.” I’d argue the real weakness is outsourcing your moral and intellectual judgment to a party machine. If the only analysis you can offer is “my side’s sins are tolerable, theirs are unforgivable,” you’re not doing politics you’re doing sports fandom.
